The main thing I'm surprised about is that they had battery left on their phones.

I wonder if it was recorded at the start, like July 12/13 or towards the end just before they decided to commit suicide.

I mean, I'm not surprised. But like...what a thing for their families to have to see. I wonder if we will ever know what they said?

The main thing I'm surprised about is that they had battery left on their phones.

They could have charged phones in the car if they had the right charge attachment.
I'm confused as to why they weren't found sooner if they did have cell phones on them though, unless the video was recorded earlier than when they were in Gillam and they ditched the phones somewhere along the way maybe...?
Honestly, this has just created so many more questions for me.

If for some reason the RCMP did not include Alan Schmegelsky in the viewing I think that would be akin to torture for him.
There is no viewing, I think the RCMP just gave the families transcribed wording with regards to their remains etc. The families haven't seen the actual video left. Also, speaking of remains, it costs a fortune to ship a body across country, wonder if their remains were cremated, because I doubt the rcmp would pay to ship Bryer and Kam's bodies back. My nephew died in Nova Scotia 10 years back and to ship his body back to BC would have cost the parents over $8000 then, I would think its more now, so they had his remains cremated, I would think the fams of these 2 would have them cremated too.

Car chargers or external battery packs could have been utilized. I make extensive use of both.

Their cell phones could have been off most of the time. And if you just want to use the camera you can use airplane mode to avoid radio detection.

You raise an interesting point...

Or, on July 19 before they begin the run to Manitoba.

That's what I'm thinking they did. It's not like they would have had bars out in the bush.

Is the Star usually pretty reputable? I was thinking their phones would be passcode locked but if they wanted family to see their last words they would have removed that.
Yes The Star is reputable...from Wikipedia:
"The Toronto Star is a Canadian broadsheet daily newspaper. Based on 2015 statistics, it is Canada's highest-circulation newspaper on overall weekly circulation"

The date of the recording could possibly help pin down time of death.

True, it could have been prerecorded. From the wording of the article it sounds like it wasnt though.

I'm not sure...no cell towers in range? Triangulation is very inexact.

Car chargers or external battery packs could have been utilized. I make extensive use of both.

Then that means they planned for the possibility of a goodbye.

I wonder what sort of "last will and testament" they had considering they set most of their belongings on fire.

I also wonder if saying what they wanted done with their remains means that the items they left by the shore were meant to allow the RCMP to find their bodies as I speculated earlier.

Also morbid thought, but did they record their suicide too?

This case just gets darker and darker. Like two teenagers recording a goodbye message and shooting themselves in the woods...even though they did evil things, sorry but that's just super depressing to me.

If the phone has GPS(and what phone doesn't these days) and is in airplane mode it can still be tracked.

ETA: If they had turned it off then yes, they couldn't be tracked, however airplane mode wouldn't cut it.

Horrible for their families indeed, but hopefully may also answer some of the many questions the families must have.

Let's face it folks: If the family member wished to remain anonymous, then it probably wasn't AS.

I read somewhere that Kam's family left town due a local backlash, and that Bryer's family were considering the same. It must be a terrible time for all of them, and they have my deepest sympathy, including AS.

Airplane mode; it prevents a phone or device from transmitting, and I believe most if not all cellphones have it. If the phone isn't transmitting, it's not detectable.

Or, they just kept the phones off until they recorded the vid. If they weren't in a cellular coverage area, no way for authorities to pick up the signal, especially if it wasn't on for long.

There are probably other ways as well, as I would think the suspects had far more knowledge of smartphones (I'm assuming they used smartphones; they seem pretty ubiquitous these days) than I do; I've never owned one.

But that's only if there is cell service. There are MANY remote areas in northern Canada that are so sparcely populated that the big 2 telcoms don't see it as profitable to offer cell service. And it's hard to imagine there would be wifi.

I'd be anonymous too. We're lucky they said anything. They don't deserve how they have been treated. It's bad enough they have to suffer for the rest of their lives.

No, the article says they got 30 seconds of video, not a transcription of 30 seconds of video. They just didn't get to see the rest of the video, likely because it contains information sensitive to the case like a confession.

"A family member told Star Vancouver that about 30 seconds of the video found on the cellphone have been shared with the families of McLeod and Schmegelsky.

In that brief segment, McLeod and Schmegelsky detailed their wishes for their remains. It was a goodbye, and a “last will and testament,” said the family member, who did not see the video first-hand.

Police have the rest of the video, of unknown length, the source said."

They don’t want to be hounded by desperate media??

Sorry was trying to reply to the comment you were replying to.

But seems they don’t care if the immediate family is hounded by the desperate media — what’s on the tape?

Also they would not need connectivity to record a video on their phone.
