Canada - USA Trade War commencing March 2025 #2

U.S. President Donald Trump said he would rather work with the Liberal Party leader in Canada to resolve a trade war he instigated with Ottawa, weighing in on an expected national election in the neighbouring North American country.
I call BS! The National Post is owned by Post Media (owned by a right wing American hedge fund). They support Conservative Poilievre. Poilievre is considered mini-Trump here in Canada. Elon Musk even gave Poilievre a nod.

But now the Conservatives are desperate. And the National Post is too. They are trying to cast the Liberals as the party that connects with Trump. As if!! Carney just clearly stated that they will not sit down with Trump until he shows respect to Canada.

Honestly. It's no wonder people just bury their heads. So many versions of an issue it's hard to keep up. Can't imagine living with it. I don't believe anything that comes out of Donald's mouth or his administration. I check that white house site daily for news and articles. To me it's all lies, they never actually follow up either, there's never anything about what they've messed up and what they need to do to correct it, just what they state has been a massive achievement and "the best ever" thing they've done. I feel for so many American people living with this garbage, then I think about the wider problems this despot is causing and what it is meaning and going to mean for each and every single one of us, no matter where we are from. It's craziness and it's a scary and bleak thought. Jmo though, maybe I'm being dramatic lol.

All moo
You be as dramatic as you want - after all, he started it.

But there aren't hundreds of thousands in the streets protesting all of his horrible actions. If Americans won't fight for their own democracy, they certainly won't fight for Canada, or for minorities or for women's rights. Your democracy is being demolished!

It is indeed.

I'm watching Trump thumb his nose at the Constitution, and disobey lawful court orders. If he won't be stopped by the law, why would he care about thousands in the streets protesting him?

It would just give him an excuse to declare martial law, or call in the military to shoot protesters down, or take some other hideous action.

I would happily protest knowing that I might be shot and killed, if only I thought it would do any good.

Since Congress has abdicated its responsibility as a check and balance, we have only the judiciary to rely on, and with the Supreme Court granting dear leader immunity, that branch is looking shaky as well.

I just feel so helpless. I can't think of anything I could do that would likely make a difference.

I read that every incoming President has determined to "reduce inefficiency" and reform spending. Prior Presidents have measured their choices and have had considerations for the impact on the federal employees.

This is an anonymous brutal impersonal slashing of citizens as if they were logs to be felled in the forest. No respect for the work that they do to support functional aspects of parks, health, farming, defense that everyone in the US has believed in and relied on.

Had it only been an internal issue with reducing employee expenses, it would have been one thing to deal with.

However, this is a crisis that has severely degraded the worth and the hard-earned trust from the rest of the world.

Here's an example.

This is illegal. Millions of people could march in the street in protest, and it wouldn't make Trump back down, nor would it make his Republican enablers do anything. The fired commissioners can take legal action, and it's possible a judge would order them to be reinstated, but in return Trump & Co will file endless appeals until the point is moot because he's already accomplished whatever his firing of them is intended to accomplish.

Campaigning and voting to overturn compliant MAGA republican senators and representatives is what is really needed.

That isn't going to work.

People in red states, by and large--not all--will vote against their own interests every time, as long as it owns the libs. They may not even be informed enough to know that they are voting against their interests.

They will never vote for a Democrat, and moderate Republicans are an extinct species.

Edited to add: I grew up in a red state and still have contacts there, so I am saying this from experience and not simply stereotyping red states.

And I repeat that not everyone in my home red state agrees with what Trump is doing. But they are astonished at the attitudes of others in the state voting against their own interests.

One of my family members was telling me about seeing "Vets for Trump" shirts at an event she attended. We both had to wonder why any veteran would support Trump since we know he considers them suckers and losers--and is now trying to cut their benefits.

And while that bird flu spreads, the second bird flu that was detected in the USA this week will also spread. H7N9 was detected at a poultry farm in Miss. this week. That flu spreads to humans and has a 40% mortality rate.

What the USA government Health Secretary is suggesting is herd immunity where 40% of people who are infected are dead.

Ooh, Mr Kennedy, what a brilliant idea! And we could try that method with Ebola, TB, Rabies, Meningitis, Cholera, Polio, Covid, everything! Just think, a world with no sick people, what a wonderful world that would be! And all thanks to the amazing Mr Trump and his team of experts.

Oops - sorry, I forgot all the people dying of starvation, oh well, the theory would work with them too, in fact even better. And all the people dying in wars all around the world, well, it's their own fault isn't it, silly little people. Why don't they all just do what they're told? I mean told by King Donald, the greatest of all - he alone can fix it!

Thank you, all you spineless Republican senators who inflicted this abomination on the American people.

Yep . I don't think PP would be good I think he'd be to much like Harper and that was a disaster. I think Carney would be good against trump. Singh has been really quiet. I'm glad we have Eby in bc he's not putting up with trump.

I don't believe it.

Trump and Putin talked for 2 hours today, ending the phone call with a hockey game challenge. Of course they discussed Canada, and who they would like to see as the next prime minister. I'm willing to bet that they desperately want Poilievre, because they know he is week with international connections and he already said the solution to the trade war is to increase exports to the USA. Harper said a few days later that he disagrees.

Carney was in the Arctic today announcing new initiatives for housing, infrastructure and military protection, and then Poilievre just happened to be there too, echoing that he has the very same idea.

Trump said that Trudeau and his people, the Liberals, are "nasty". Trump is lying when he says he'd rather continue working with people he calls "nasty".

As soon as an election is called, Russia and the USA will begin social media manipulation and propaganda to choose a prime minister they want.

Doug Ford is somewhat out of line. If he wants to add a surcharge to Ontario energy, that's his business. He is not a spokesperson for Canada, no one appointed him to discuss the trade war with the USA government. He took it upon himself to try to stop the 25% USA tariff on Ontario with the surcharge. He paused that surcharge, what he does next is his choice.

He should step back and let the new prime minister step into the role.

Carney's government is ready to have discussions with the USA government about CUSMA (and tariffs) as soon as there is a guarantee that the USA government will stop using profanity, insults and threats.

Fair to remember that when Doug Ford was the Canadian voice speaking up and out, he had just hosted all the Canadian Premier's in Ontario to come up with a x-country strategy for comabtting US tariff's that Trump had announced would b 'upcoming'. Doug Ford was the head of that "Team Canada" strategy that developped from the Premiers. They did this back in late-January because Trump had stated the tariff's would originally come on 2nd February.

Precisely because our Federal Government was prorouged and nowhere to be found.

The Team Canada response was the brainchild of the Premier's of Canada, not the Feds who seem to want to be claiming it now - they were busy trying to decide who was going to run in their leadership race, then campaigning for the job. Those Feds certainly didn't believe the situtation warranted calling ottawa back to work to get anything done on the national level.

Ford and the other Premier's stepped in to fill that vacuum. Good on them.

And, IMO, Carney should also insist that he'll deal with the USofA and free & fair trade only when the USofA removes their illegal tariffs ... and then actually acts like an adult and invites Canada to the table to renegotiate the USMCA if Trump no longer likes his own deal.

IMO.

Your democracy is being demolished!

Indeed

A just-released annual report on the global state of democracy makes for depressing reading. But what's even more depressing is what might appear in next year's edition.
Or rather, what might not appear in the 2026 volume: an old democracy, by some measures the world's oldest (new window); a superpower that long circled the globe professing to spread freedom.
If it continues like this, the United States will not score as a democracy when we release [next year's] data, said Staffan Lindberg, head of the Varieties of Democracy project (new window), run out of Sweden's University of Gothenburg.
If it continues like this, democracy [there] will not last another six months.
U.S. could lose democracy status, says global watchdog

May I respectfully ask if anybody here is suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome?

Kemug,

Might I respectfully ask if you think it's OK for a leader of a sovereign nation to breach it's international alliances, free trade agreements and threaten another sovereign nation with Annexation without cause?

Is that OK?

Is that democratic?

Curious.
