My dad has his own business using steel. He preferred steel made from iron ore rather than scrap metal because of the business he was in. He said steel made from scrap metal isn't as strong as that made from iron ore and creates metal fatigue when you need tensile strength. His preferred steel was from Germany and Sweden. The US has closed a lot of mines, currently most are around the Great Lakes, which is where most steel mills were; Indiana, Michigan, Ohio. You shouldn't be pissing off trade partners where you need iron ore. Most of US steel is made from scrap metal now. It's a great way to recycle but the impurities in it can cause metal fatigue.

Iron ore does makes better steel, no one wants quality anymore, they want cheap, quick and convenient but then whine when it doesn't do the job. If something is worth doing then do it right. Ukraine and Russia are importers of iron ore. Makes you wonder what Donald's end game is with his interference in Ukraine and Russia peace talks. His involvement comes with a price.

It might be because it is not a new initiative. It's being re-announced with emphasis on shortening the timeline and making the projects more economical. Trudeau put the plan in place.

Yes. And it also might be because Australia is just waking up on Wednesday morning. We might see it in our MSM later today.

Our news cycle tends to be about 8 hours behind (or ahead) depending when the news is released.

This cannot possibly be legal.

Businesses are required to keep employee records and payroll information for years on end. How on earth can these illegally fired employes document their prior job duties and salaries when they go looking for new jobs?

I hope there is some mechanism whereby these unfairly fired employees can sure the DOGE group in a class action lawsuit for their loss of funds as well as intentional destruction of employment records.
Hopefully there is a class action suit against DOGE and specifically Elon Musk. Just like the one filed against Alex Jones for saying the Newtown massacre was a hoax. The murdered children's parents sued Alex Jones and won a billion dollar payout. Of course, he said he was bankrupt and hid his assets so they've received little. But Musk's assets are a lot more transparent. I hope he becomes not only persona non grata the world over but loses everything. A fitting result for a man who has systematically destroyed thousands of lives and has fun doing it. His casual disregard for the chaos and heartache he's caused using X to post silly comments. Horrible human being.

Oh, I found something on our military website. (from 2 hours ago)
It is our JORN radar system ... Over the Horizon Radar.

The partnership was confirmed in a call with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday.

Canada’s Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar system will be an investment of more than C$6 billion that will provide early warning radar coverage from threats to the Arctic.

Canada buys JORN

Would not surprise me if NZ is right in there with it.. . They, as you probably know , are the ones who refuel all the aircraft from the USA and Canada that go to the Antarctic, at Otago in the South Island they also have a darn near monopoly on Antarctic/Artic clobber,, coats , hats, vests, they love anything to do with ice and snow, NZers are built different to anyone else... heheh. no. they are, and they are soo goodlooking too.

I'm pretty certain that this guy below was being diplomatic and simply allowing Canada's new PM to do the first announcement:

This guy below is our Prime Minister, Vern. :)

And yes, he is very diplomatic.

Doug Ford is somewhat out of line. If he wants to add a surcharge to Ontario energy, that's his business. He is not a spokesperson for Canada, no one appointed him to discuss the trade war with the USA government. He took it upon himself to try to stop the 25% USA tariff on Ontario with the surcharge. He paused that surcharge, what he does next is his choice.

He should step back and let the new prime minister step into the role.

Carney's government is ready to have discussions with the USA government about CUSMA (and tariffs) as soon as there is a guarantee that the USA government will stop using profanity, insults and threats.

All good points.

I have assumed for awhile he will be gunning for the CPC leadership at some point and is setting the stage to say to voters that he "stood up to Trump during the trade wars of 2025".

He is notoriously diplomatic, until his ire is raised and then he calmly stands up in Parliament and gestures to the opposition leader and says ' Siddown Boofhead ' ( that unfortunate individual is as bald as a bowling ball )

When I had a place in Florida up to 2023 I could get eggs at Aldi for 68 cents! It fluctuated but you never paid more than $1.35. I wonder what they cost in Aldi now?
MOO: My local Aldis has several types of eggs. The cheapest were 6.59 per dozen.

"The two Democratic commissioners at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said they were illegally fired by President Donald Trump on Tuesday, in another major test of the independence of regulatory agencies.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1935 to uphold a law that allows FTC commissioners to be fired only for good cause, such as neglecting their duties."

Federal Employee records are maintained by OPM (Office of Personnel Management), which has been infiltrated by DOGE. It is certainly possible that DOGE wiped substantial parts of the personnel database. Many of the lost jobs affect all of North America. Everything from climate forecasts to pollution controls affects other countries.

Came here to post this as well, after seeing your post earlier that OZ was laying low :)

Glad the money is going to an ally.

IQALUIT — The federal government will spend more than $6 billion to buy an Australian early warning radar missile detection system and $420 million to expand Canada’s northern military presence year-round to assert sovereignty in the Arctic, says Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Mark Carney says Canada will buy $6-billion missile detection system to confront threats from Russia and China

This Aussie article (a piece in the live blog) describes the proposed Arctic radar system as a "snowy version of Pine Gap".

One has to stop trying to use logic with the Trump hires like RFK.

The military purge of DEI has a pathetic example. Evidently purging military records using the word "Gay" resulted in removal of references to Enola Gay.

This is the name of the aircraft that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Enola Gay was the name of the Air Force Captain's mother. He named the plane after her.

Evidently employing 19 year-old computer geeks to do quick-and-dirty record purging has unintended consequences.

Australia sure is keeping this quiet in our MSM. I totally believe it as we have very good radar systems here and our own lifestyle is very similar to the Canadian lifestyle in many ways. We feel a Commonwealth kinship. But I can't find a word about it in our own MSM.

At the moment, I think we are keeping our heads down while continuing to try to negotiate with the Trump administration. And while still helping our overseas allies as much as we can.

imo
While mutual help is understandable, Australia's navy is very small, with limited capability. China just had a major naval exercise off the coast of Australia, and at first they weren't detected

Canada's North is far from Australia, and I'm not sure how much help they can provide to Canada.

Except he hasn't stood up to Trump. He retaliated against the 25% tariffs with a 25% electricity surcharge. Trump said that he would increase steel and aluminium tariffs to 50%. Ford dropped the surcharge, claiming that the USA is willing to talk. Since then, nothing.

Additional tariffs are scheduled for April 2. We've known that for some time, Ford isn't telling us anything new. Those April 2 tariffs will apply to global USA trade partners. Any country that gives Trump something he wants will have the tariffs eased, not eliminated. Ford needs to stay out of it. He's is nominated by Canada's premiers as their spokesperson, but not to speak internationally about individual, or collective, province positions.

He might well have bigger political aspirations since he is taking liberties - tried to squeeze in between Trudeau and Carney as Canada's tariff negotiator.

Cutting out CDC epidemiologists and virologists has consequences, too.

In the virology world, there is huge concern because one of the DNA sections of the Avian Influenza viruses most susceptible to mutations is exactly the same sequence that mutated badly in Ebola and SARS. But heck, we don't need no scientists to tell us stuff. RFK says we can take cod liver oil and let the Avian Influenza viruses mutate enough to kill all our poultry, beef and milk food sources.

My internist is worried enough that she is stockpiling a 10 yr stable supply of staples. They are available through various LDS staple food stores across the country.
