"Tariffs are a tax cut for the American people, and the president is a staunch advocate for tax cuts."

I... what? Do Americans really believe this? Or is this just bad faith arguing / blatant manipulation of the American people?

She's blatantly lying- Trump's tariffs would amount to an average tax increase of $1,072 per household

Today on NPR's Marketplace with Kai Ryssdal, he made a final comment that was uncharacteristically brutal for him. He is usually diplomatic and wry, but he just couldn't take Karoline Levitt and said she was deliberately deceptive and outright lied.

She said: Tariffs are a tax cut for the American people.

Kai Ryssdal said that was a lie, and unequivocally said: Tariffs are an attack on the American people.

That's the state of ethics in the White House today..

looks like Australia has just joined the ranks of countries Donald is putting tariffs on. At this point, does the States even have any allies left?
This nothing we weren't expecting or bracing for. This article is from December.

For sure. ... . Australia news live: US tariffs ‘a dog act’, Labor’s Ed Husic says; Albanese hits back at Dutton, saying he should back Australia not Trump

Husic: Trump's imposition of tariffs ‘a dog act’

Labor’s Ed Husic has been speaking to ABC TV just now about the US tariffs, and was asked if he considered it the way to treat a good friend and ally.

Husic responded:

Let’s call a spade a spade. I think this is a dog act after over a century of friendship.

Australians have stood by and stood with Americans for many decades. In fact, Australians have spilled blood alongside Americans in different conflicts. We have stood together not just from a national security perspective but from an economic security perspective as well, trying to improve trade relationships between countries because it is good for economies and workers when done right.

What we have seen here, what has it been for?

When Australians call you a 'dog act' you can't fall any further. ... That's about as low as it gets.

Also of interest is that Chinese LIDAR technology is being sold to European autmobile manufacturers. This technology is how updated driverless technology is done and puts China companies and Mercedes-Benz as partnering for a technology that is going to leave Tesla and other American auto manufacturers in the dust.

Trump's boastful mistakes are to China's huge advantage.

In another act of tariff-related fallout, USA's Walmart approached China asking for them to absorb the costs of US-imposed tariffs. China is not taking this request with humor or good nature. China will not want to be giving discounts to it's many huge international customers to allow them to deal with the added expenses of tariffs.

This is going to hit MAGA folks right where it hurts.

Admittedly I don't get much Australian news in Canada, but I genuinely thought y'all were exempt from all this nonsense.

Honestly this just goes to show that these tariffs were never about border security, fentanyl, lack of defensive spending, or not supporting Ukraine enough (compared to the States) or even trade deficits.

As far as I am aware, Australia imports more than they export to the States, so there's no "subsidising" the Australian economy at play here like Trump is claiming the US does to Canada (not that there is there either, but for arguments sake).

He's targeting all of his allies for utterly bogus reasons. All while cozying up to Russia. This seems like way more than just shoring up domestic manufacturing, after all there are so many other ways to encourage American companies to produce domestic goods, maybe like subsidising the infostructure for one thing.

Dog Act is new lingo for me as far as Australian slang goes, but it certainly seems fitting here.

flipp, that is EXACTLY it, isn't it?

Is it about destabilizing the world economy?

So far it seems like it all works into China's favor.

Canada put high tariffs on Chinese vehicles to appease Trump, but since that didn't stop his tariffs on us or stop the 51st State nonsense, I know most Canadians want to remove those tariffs entirely.

The ironic thing is I've seen many American Conservatives (and even some Maple MAGAs) claim that Trump is doing all this to weaken China's trade agreements with other countries so that they (America) can negotiate better deals. None of them seem to understand that is anything this is just going to push countries like Canada to want to create better trade deals not with the USA, but with China!

Infact most Canadians I talk to think it's imperative that we start building better trade agreements with as many other countries as we can. Everything from Canada joining the European Union, to CANSUK, to having free trade agreements with large parts of Asia are on the table.

Aussie here. Im actually scared. Im hopeless at all things economics/financial but, with the stock market falling, was that on purpose so billionaires can buy them cheap? Or does the current US govt really not understand what they’re doing / have done?

It's very unclear to me as to why the elected officials in the US Congress are not exercising their authority to stop this madness.

A US news group Axios is also reporting that Musk is going to be funneling $100 million to Trump's political organization. That money would certainly buy the support of GOP politicians and their own political organizations.

It almost seems that Musk is openly Putin's conduit toTrump.
