US turns to Denmark as it hunts for eggs despite Trump’s threat over Greenland

Danish Egg Association says US asked if it could export eggs as prices surge despite president’s promise to lower them

The United States has asked Denmark and other European nations if they can export eggs as Americans face surging egg prices, the Nordic country’s egg association said on Friday.

The request from the US Department of Agriculture coincides with a raft of new US tariffs on countries, including in Europe, and the threat of more.

Donald Trump has also threatened economic sanctions unless Denmark hands over control of Greenland to the US, and said this week that he thought the US would eventually annex it – despite its status as an autonomous territory of Denmark, a member of the European Union.

Defence analysts warn U.S. will control key systems on F-35 fighter jets, putting Canada at risk

As the U.S. becomes increasingly hostile, the amount of control the Pentagon will have over Canada’s F-35 fleet could be a significant strategic vulnerability.

[...]

Sweetman pointed out there were no guarantees the U.S. would supply Canada with the upgrades. That highlights a significant strategic vulnerability for Canada, he added. Any American decision to “unplug” Canada from the F-35 technical updates could eventually render the planes inoperable, he added.

“Until (Donald) Trump was elected nobody gave a thought to the idea that the U.S. president would be cutting off Europe or trying to annex Canada or take over Greenland,” Sweetman said. “It was a completely crazy idea — you couldn’t have sold it as fiction. But here we are.”

Is the US going to stick a tariff on the eggs?

Lesson #1: Don't anger people that you may want something from. imo

Trump, unsurprisingly, has threatened tariffs on Danish products.

maybe denmark can trade eggs for california, lol

on a more serious note - apparently it would be quite tricky for the danish egg association to sell eggs to the US! in the US it’s required to wash off a coating off the eggs, while in the EU it’s considered a health risk to do so. this is also the reason why in US eggs are kept in refrigerators in the supermarket, and in the EU they are not.

the danish also don’t produce that many eggs that it would make a big difference for the US shortage.

The egg situation seems to be a case of burning your bridges.

That's interesting. I wondered why US eggs are always so white. I thought maybe they were bleached. Ours are a range of light brown colours.

or like kicking people around on your way up the ladder... , these are the folks you meet on the way down...... or as the esteemed Sun Tzu says ,in the Art of War....

....... Wait by the river long enough and the body of your enemy will float by you.

A lot of people now have hens in Toronto and they keep them on the counter for a long time because they don’t wash off the bloom. The eggs are far better quality than supermarket eggs.

I love that you mention Hygge Troops. The world needs so much hygge and a big reduction in klaphat more than ever right now. This must surely be weird enough for you now? 😆

Take Sobeys Inc., Canada's second-largest national food retailer with approximately 1,600 stores across ten provinces. A spokesperson of its parent company, Empire Company Limited, told Business Insider that over the past year, around 12% of their sales came from products sourced in the US, but given their work to "find alternatives to US sources over the past 30 days, that number is expected to decrease."

Musk responded on social media by calling the move "crazy", retweeting a post that suggested he should cut off Canadian access to SpaceX and Starlink in retaliation.

Musk's high-profile association with the Trump administration has aligned with a global decline in Tesla sales.

Canada is only "broken", if that is the correct word, since Stephen Harper was replaced. At that time, Putin was angry that Canada was so strong. Ten year later, under Trudeau, Putin is looking at Canada as Ukraine 2.0.

Carney, in his first act as prime minister, dropped the consumer carbon tax ... but the carbon tax is not gone. Carbon tax rebates are gone. The tax remains, but it will have a new name. Carney must think that Conservatives having nothing more to offer than to remove the tax, so getting rid of carbon tax means Conservatives will now vote Liberal?

Carney's first responsible act should have been calling an election. Carney is not elected. He should not be running the country any longer than is necessary.
he will ...give him a minute ;)

This time, Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan wants to take legal action to prevent cruise ships from stopping at British Columbia ports, permanently.

It would not surprise me if parts of 2025 overlapped President Trump’s plan after all it’s 900 or so pages long with conservative viewpoints. Trump ran on Agenda 47, which was out there for all to see. I am not surprised by anything that has been implemented, it was never a big secret. imo
Do you agree with it, though? Are you all for disemboweling institutions like the National Park system, opening up the areas for drilling, mining, etc. Do you like the idea of reducing Social Security for people who've paid into it their whole lives? Or about getting rid of people in departments that have the education and skill level to deal with things like oil spills, natural disasters, health care and education and replace them with party faithful who have no idea how to operate these types of industries?
