All of those people who wanted the US to be run "like a business" are now getting to see what his business 'skills' truly are.

Vacillation and uncertainty ... reneging on deals ... harming suppliers ... which led to lawsuits, failures and bankruptcies.

imo
Thank you @SouthAussie …. that summary is enlightening. And alarming.

For some reason I am reminded of a conversation that I had with a college professor some years ago. Discussion centered on someone that had designs on going to medical school to become a doctor. The professor quipped something along the lines of ‘I wouldn’t want him working on my dog’. Just might apply IMO. MOO

Trump has no idea what he's doing with applying tariffs to North America automotive industry. Does he know that the USA lacks skilled tradespeople needed to build automotive parts in the USA? It's far easier for Canada to create their own cars, since Canada has all the necessary materials and engineers.

"U.S. President Donald Trump's assertion this week that he doesn't want Canadian cars in the U.S. market doesn't reflect how the North American automotive industry actually works, experts say.
...

"The reality is that the North American auto industry has spent decades of collaboration and trade and so much time and money building up these extremely integrated supply chains," Nguyen said. "And there are a lot of car parts that are only made in one country."

Parts can cross the border more than a half-dozen times before the car is complete, she wrote in December. Frise says the industry's "very integrated" and "highly optimized" supply chain has been built over several decades, starting with the 1965 Auto Pact between Canada and the U.S.

"It holds costs down, which is good for consumers," he said, "and it provides jobs on both sides of the border." It also provides more consistent quality by allowing one location to specialize in a specific part or assembly, he said.
...

One way Trump could achieve that goal would be by strengthening the U.S. education system, Frise says.

"They have a chronic shortage of skilled tradespeople and engineers," he said. "And you can't make things without those kinds of people with skills like that. And so they need to graduate more engineers and more skilled tradespeople."

I have been wondering that too. Who is the other JG? The one who was meant to be added. And why did no-one in that infamous chat thread question the presence of a JG, but just kept on chatting about attack plans despite a JG being there?

imo
I suspect (?) that no one reading in their phone carefully looked at all the group members- as the chat proceeded , if JG was not saying anything, the initials were not popping up and if the group is new, they probably thought that whomever was in it was added by some one who knew what they were doing IMO.

The Swiss Cheese effect. All the holes in the cheese line up because everyone is making assumptions.

This is the kind of theory that is used in investigations of airplane accidents and disasters.

Oligarchs have absolutely no idea how it is for middle and low income earners.

The current US administration is filled with oligarchs. I counted 13 billionaires when the appointments were happening.

Elon Musk
Howard Lutnick
Linda McMahon
Scott Bessent
Warren Stephens
Leandro Rizzuto Jr
Charles Kushner
Tom Barrack
Vivek Ramaswamy (no longer with DOGE)
Doug Burgum
Stephen Feinberg
Jared Isaacman
Kelly Loeffler

Plus there were also millionaires who were given positions.

They will have no understanding of how hard it is to pay rent/mortgage, pay utilities, own a car, put food on the table, and raise children (or not) for the "average" person.

I think there is a vast majority of US citizens who can't afford Trump's harebrained tariff schemes, amongst his other harebrained schemes.

imo

Daily Telegraph has a pretty funny/sad comment about the Houthi Signal scandal and the Senate hearing:

"We now live in a world where the head of the CIA has to announce that the Defence Secretary was not drunk when he ordered an airstrike on another country."

People in the USA buy foreign cars (e.g.: Toyota) that are assembled in North America (including Canada, Mexico), but many foreign countries do not buy USA cars (that are assembled in North America). According to the USA government, this is "unfair".

Putting tariffs on foreign cars (assembled in USA, Canada, Mexico) means they will be more expensive for USA buyers. The automotive industry will slow down, and people will put off buying new cars until tariffs are removed. The USA government is not returning car manufacturing to the USA, the gov't is destroying the automotive industry.

"The United States is announcing 25 percent import duties on cars and car parts from abroad.
...

According to the president, countries outside the US can easily sell their cars to the Americans, but Europe and Asia, on the other hand, buy too few American cars. Trump calls that "unfair".

Cars from Germany, Japan and Korea are particularly popular in the US. In addition, many cars for the American market are assembled in Mexico and Canada. The expectation is that these cars will become more expensive for the American consumer, because the importers will pass on the levy to their customers."

Prime Minister Carney and others have one comment on the USA government today: betrayal and abdication of the trade agreement; the USA has no credibility.

We know that the USA has spent decades declaring the country superior to all others in terms of freedom, democracy, quality of life, and so much more. I hope people in the USA realize all of that has been wiped out in a couple of months by their elected government. The USA has no credibility. It is a country that betrays other countries. It is a country that cannot be trusted. What the USA has lost is not something that can be restored easily. I don't think anyone looks at the USA as representing anything that is admired anymore.

"He suggested that retaliatory measures might follow, and he fumed at Trump's actions as an abdication of the continental trade agreement.

"This is a violation and he has betrayed our trade agreement," Carney said. "A response will happen soon. I won't say more. When it comes to our options, we do have options."

Earlier Wednesday, Carney promised a $2-billion package to protect Canada's auto industry.
...

One analyst lamented that this is a departure from 60 years of tradition, starting with the 1965 Auto Pact that led to Canada-U.S. free trade. Furthermore, it makes a mockery of the agreement that Trump himself signed, CUSMA, which was supposed to allow for stable, predictable trade.

"The Americans have lost their credibility in terms of being a reliable trading partner," said Fraser Johnson, an expert on auto supply chains at Western University's Ivey Business School in London, Ont.
...

Canada's share of North American auto production has been relatively stable since the 1980s, and that the real shift has been from U.S. production to Mexico."

A very bitter blow for the Brits... cars are a major export for them, and the USA market is , I think, it's biggest one , sure, they sell a lot of Bentleys' and RollsRoyces to China, ( one sees lots of them there, I was astonished ) .. their main market is the USA.. Carney seems to be taking it all in his stride, never descending into invective or slander or slur.. tells it as it is and just moves on, creating a solution.

Carney will respond in kind on April 2/3 when the tariffs are applied. The Liberal gov't announced a couple of months ago that they have a long list of tariffs ready to go if the USA gov't escalated the war. Canadians have been told that those tariffs will increase the cost of living for Canadians. No one is pretending that tariffs damage other countries. They damage the country that imposes the tariffs, but Canada has no option but to retaliate.

The best solution for Canadians is to stop buying anything that is not necessary. That slows the economy, and guarantees the recession that has started in the USA will spread to Canada. Canadians will increase national trade, and focus on products from all countries except the USA.

Not all Toyota models are made in the US.

The very well-selling and iconic Toyota 4Runner is made in Japan. The Lexus GX models are also made in Japan . The Japanese factories are well-known for their high quality work.

Those Trump cheerleaders should be really happy about 25% tariffs on their vehicles! They can feel so much richer spending an extra $10k on a new car - money that will go straight into the pockets of their elected government.

Oh we know, P.M. Carney (or is that you, @otto?). We know all too well. It’s a tragedy. Personally, I never felt we were superior. I have always been well aware that there are any number of countries that have what we have, including Canada. But, I have always been grateful to live here and enjoy these privileges. Sadly, that is no longer true as I see the U.S. descend into an authoritarian hell hole (to use Trump’s words about certain African countries).

The USA has no credibility. It is a country that betrays other countries. It is a country that cannot be trusted. What the USA has lost is not something that can be restored easily. I don't think anyone looks at the USA as representing anything that is admired anymore.

Carney (or @otto) is right, and it’s heartbreaking.

Canada's election day is April 28th... Australia goes to vote on May 3rd. (Federal election, all states and territories )... . as things stand, at the moment, it looks like a non conservative government will continue in both countries, unless some godawful SNAFU happens.

After both these elections take place I expect a knocking back of all things American and a promotion of all things Canadian and Australian, and possibly , even probably, a severe adjustment of military treaties and military purchases, and military exchanges, very quickly .

(AU always votes on a Saturday, because it is compulsory to vote. The voting booths know exactly how many people to prepare for, there is no waiting, it turns into quite a festive day, BBQ and drinks, and conviviality all round.. The vote is secret ( AU invented this ) and while you must vote, you can invalidate your vote by drawing a rude pic on the paper.. AU gets a 98% valid vote turnout though, very few muck it up ) .

We are planning a trip to the Toronto area. It is tough planning as we are decidedly skipping any US stopover (even Hawaii) and we need to do a stopover or two as we will have a little one with us.

I think we have decided that Fiji and Vancouver are good break points. :)

BMW, VW, Mercedes-Benz shares all sliding

German carmakers are being rocked by the announcement of new auto tariffs at the US border too.

Shares are being hit in early trading in Frankfurt, where BMW are down 4.2%, Volkswagen has lost 3.3%, and Mercedes-Benz has dropped 4.1%. Shares in UK luxury carmaker Aston Martin have tumbled over 6% at the start of trading in London, to what looks to be a record low.

(and this is what happens in tariff wars,..... totally foreseeable, totally expected... )

GM and Ford shares hit

Shares in US carmakers fell in after-hours trading last night too, after Trump’s announcement.

General Motors has fallen by 6.2%, and Ford has lost 4.7%.

The new US tariffs will apply all cars made outside of the US, and certain car parts too, so they will have a wide impact on the auto sector, and could badly hurt profits.

As Barrons explains:

Estimates of cost increases from new tariffs are in the thousands of dollars per new car. Higher costs could turn into higher prices, destroying demand for new cars, or they could eat into profit margins.

Any impact would be uneven, though. The Chevy Equinox is made in Mexico. The Toyota RAV4 is built in Ontario, Canada. The Ford Escape is made in Kentucky. It isn’t easy to untangle 30-plus years of free trade. ( this might be the understatement of the year, so far )
