This article has crossed my path, arguing that Trump is planning something more than just a trade war.

If ordered to attack Canada, what percentage of US armed forces do we think would actually obey that order?
My experience of soldiers is that they obey orders.

It depends on leadership - the officers who would lead their forces to attack. It would also depend on the attitude of the US population towards such a war. Something like this might spark a lot of opposition.

But Trump, like all presidents, is Commander in Chief.

They would obey. First Trump will vilify Canada and Canadians. Then he will convince the American people that Canada actually belongs to the US and he's just taking back what is rightfully his.

If this happened, the US would be dealing with a civil war at the same time. Americans like Canada and most Americans did not vote for Trump.

This might be true, but, the other hand, I don't see a lot of Americans protesting the events of the past month. Will the people be so beaten down that they are either afraid to speak out, or that they believe speaking out will make no difference? I have no doubt whatsoever, that T will turn the military against his own people if it helps him achieve his goals.

I see lots of protests on the news channels on YouTube. They are protesting Trump, Elon, Tesla, Russia, and Tariffs. Usually all at the same rallies. If you aren't seeing them, try searching YouTube.

As for Trump turning the military against US citizens, I sadly agree that he is despicable enough to do that. I wonder how the military would respond? Brother against brother? MAGA people are not the only ones with guns. They just like to talk about their guns. All the time. I don't have guns, however, so I'll sharpen some sticks.

We're somewhere between 1939 and the Hand Maid's Tale.

"On February 20, 1939, a Nazi rally took place at Madison Square Garden, organized by the German American Bund. More than 20,000 people attended"

"two days before George Washington's Birthday, as a pro-"Americanism" rally; the stage at the event featured a huge portrait of George Washington with swastikas on each side"

It's so much easier to spread the propaganda today than it was back in the war years. :(

We should know shortly who is our new Prime Minister. Both of the top contenders have lots of experience.

I have hopes for Freeland, although the country might not forgive her for bringing down the liberal government. At least we wouldn't need an election right away because she is already a member of parliament.

Carney is a bit of a dark horse and I wish he could speak French. However, I am not sure that Stephen Harper spoke French very well, and he was a decent PM. He got us through the bank crisis better than any other country in the world.

I wouldn't call him a dark horse.

He was being cultivated as the next leader before he'd even left the Bank of England. The Liberal party doesn't leave things to chance, IMO.

From 2019: "Reports had stated party members met to discuss the option of former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney replacing Justin Trudeau as the Liberal Party leader."

I have a great deal of hesitation right now in doing anything that will draw the attention of 20 year old DOGE wuderkinds who can use my Social Security data and other embedded information in various kinds of data banks to draw attention to me for being "disruptive, nasty, leftist, a Democrat who voted for Obama" or anything else to make an example of me. I live in a largely red neighborhood and it's bad enough when my 75 year old flag-waving neighbors are jumping up and down in the streets with delight, like senior girl cheerleaders in some tragic pantomime, or driving their megatruck with huge Trump flags in the streets.

Shots through the windows and stuff like that really worry me.

The other shoe is going to drop for Americans, from Maine to California, and from Alaska to Florida when the inevitable result of Trump's tariff idiocy gets it's python grip on the American economy. Trump himself is in some sort of fantasy , some 1880 time warp about tariffs, he has not caught up with 2025 as yet, unfortunately, lots of Americans are quite savvy with ordinary arithmetic and can foretell accurately the effect.. a state of mind that must be very uncomfortable.

For those Americans , my heartfelt sorrow and sympathy..

It is at this point, when the glaring reality knocks on an American's front door, that day when he/ she has to get a new gear box, or a minor repair to the car, the day the farmer in Iowa has to shell out for the potash for summer crops, the day the housewife has to balance nutrition with the chequebook, the day the builder of houses has to renege on his contract and tell his buyers its going to be $ 15,000 dearer, just today, might end up being $50.000.00... when Walmart closes it's doors, when Mcdonalds becomes 'fine dining'.. when the temperature hits 120 in Arizona and there is no electricity for the air con, when the lights go out in Las Vegas,... this time next year , Americans will be thinking, ''ye gods, remember when we used to travel to gamble??? what were we thinking!!!????''

Tariff wars have walking wounded, knocked out wounded and wounded that never get up again, and history tells us, even American history itself, they've done this to themselves before, it hits home harder than anywhere else.

I'm just sayin......

I feel you. I'm deep in MAGA-ville myself. The hatred around me is real and palpable. Soon I'll be moving to a much calmer, bluer, and more diverse city. I expect to be more vocal then.

And apropos of Alaska, every smoke, shirt, shoe that an Alaskan needs now has to be shipped around or flown over British Columbia, because on the truck, these goods attract a tariff on entering BC and on leaving BC and entering Alaska, as if life wasn't tough enough for the state!!.. oh well.

I think it will take months, but if people dont get their Social Security payments on time, finally they will stand up and notice. Of course, it will be the fault of President Biden.

I'm watching what is happening to Medicaid. I don't need to explain how awful the extreme cost of healthcare is, for both consumers and for employers. In my area, many doctor's offices have taken to putting their staff on Medicaid as their health insurance. I am told that Medicaid is actually fairly decent reimbursement for childrens healthcare, although it's terrible for OB care and regular medical and surgical care.

The secondary consequences of losing Medicaid funding is that small hospitals that rely on Medicaid funding will be foced to close. This will hurt the lower-income working people of more rural American more than ever. Maybe they'll finally realize what they voted for. The twist is that each individual state determined if they would elect to use the Medicaid funding. Those that didn't are MOSTLY red states, and they are already showing the terrible consequences of turning down the funding:

Jean Chretien was outstanding this afternoon at the Liberal Party convention. What a sense of humour! He spoke French when he commented on Donald, and English when he spoke to Donald. He had a lot to say "from one old guy to another old guy ... "
