U.S. Congress bill aims to prevent funding of invasion of Canada, Panama or Greenland

A new bill introduced to the United States House of Representatives would withhold federal funding for any American “operations to invade or seize territory from” Canada, Panama or Greenland -- unless Congress agrees to it first, that is.

Introduced Thursday by Rhode Island Rep. Seth Magaziner, the No Invading Allies Act would require U.S. President Donald Trump to seek a formal declaration of war, congressional approval or proof of a “national emergency created by attack or imminent threat of attack” to authorize offensive military action against the places mentioned above.

US companies can also cut on Federal and State lands. They just need to pay market value for leases. Canadian companies do not have to pay market value for their leases.

Canadian companies pay stumpage fees. It's not free wood.

Thank goodness there's sanity in some Congressional members. It's becoming obvious the US has a man in charge who has no idea about domestic problems or international implications of his ideas. Next on his agenda is to withdraw all troops from Europe, which pairs with his wishful thinking to take over Greenland. There are whispers T possibly will allow China to take Taiwan. Canada is definitely on his agenda, something Americans never dreamed would happen. Doubtful the average American signed up for this.

I'm not so certain that proposal will even make it through committee. The Dems don't have the votes. So far, even the moderate Republicans seem to be holding the "he's just all talk" tow-line and keeping mum despite his actions.

Remember when they all (the Republicans) went nutzoid because "The Emperor" Obama was ruling via executive orders and not via the other branches ... and just how absolutely unconstitutional that was?? They called it a "Constitutional Crisis".

Exeutive Order Totals
Obama44: 8 years: 227
Trump45: 4 years: 220
Trump47: 7 weeks: 82 and counting!

But apparently no Emperor and no Constitutional Crisis.

AKA: "Rules for thee, but not for we."

I hope Americans remember that next election.

As well as Ontario's electricity tariff against the US starting today, China's tariffs against the US also start today.

Chinese tariffs of up to 15% on things like corn, soybeans and beef ... which are some of the most important exports by the US to China. Apparently China is the largest market for US chicken, pork, cotton and the other goods.

Chinese tariffs on U.S. farm products take effect as trade tensions mount

Canadians seem to have more to say about the loss of rights to USA women than they do.

Canadians are not anti-USA, but they bewildered that the USA population appears complacent about the war they started with their closest ally.

LOVE these fabulous Canadian women. ❤️

LOVE these fabulous Canadian women. ❤️

We're a pretty tough bunch because here, no matter the month, Winter is Coming ...

One should not mistake our Canadian politeness for weakness.

We have Canadian geese, beavers, moose AND polar bears to contend with year round!

With both Canada and USA in Nato what would happen if trump tries to take over our border? How would NATO handle something like that any ideas?
Canada would seek to invoke NATO Article 5, which would put non North American NATO in a very difficult position. Everybody's sympathies would be with the Canadians, but we would all be hamstrung in the short term by our current military dependance on the United States. Basically, Canada's role in this putative WWIII would be Poland's in WWII.

Until us in Europe can build up our militaries without having recourse to American weaponry and intelligence, I don't see how the cavalry could come running to Canada's rescue.

I don't think the bill will make it out of committee. The current House is not a hospitable environment for this bill. Magaziner is a Rhode Island Democrat, and the House is controlled by Republicans. Right now, the House is pursuing a radical budget bill favored by President Trump. There's no interest in anything bipartisan, because it isn't in Trump's interest. A political battle about funding the government may happen soon, as funding runs out on Friday. JMO

I suspect that Canada was one of the best customers for California wines simply because it's cheaper than EU imports.

I was at the LCBO the other day and was surprised by how inexpensive Portuguese wine is. I picked up a $9 bottle and it was a nice, even keel table wine.

The USA has in times past created 'imminent threats'.... eg. Gulf of Tonkin
Yes and trump is already preparing to invade mexico on the grounds of "cartels". So now Mexico is not an ally worth mentioning in that bill? At least President Sheinbaum is pushing back on criminals being supplied by the US, guns south across the border for blood-soaked profit.

So we look away while we arm the cartels, then invade a sovereign country to "stop" it?

I'm less familiar with it, but isn't that more or less what happened preceeding the Gulf War? America sold Iraq its outdated equipment then turned around and went, "hey, they're armed!"

Also, I don't understand how the US has any right to enter Mexico because of its cartel problem.

"Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has been given a prominent role in the Trump administration, said on social media the designation "means they're eligible for drone strikes."

Experts, however, said that bombing Mexican cartels or sending troops over the border still appeared unlikely, although Mr. Trump's unpredictability makes it impossible to completely rule out."

Plans presented to Trump have included airstrikes on cartel infrastructure, assassinating cartel leaders, and training Mexican forces, Rolling Stone reported. The scheme would most likely include covert operations and patrols just over the border to stem the flow of drugs across the frontier.

“That sounds a whole lot like what we did in Afghanistan for 20 years unsuccessfully,” says a former Marine officer who worked with special operations in Afghanistan.

Ironically with Mark Carney's win, Canadians are now joking "It takes a Carney to deal with a clown..."

Trump being the clown.

I am putting that on a T-shirt 🤣

And the Princes and Princesses of Denmark are always given a Greenlander middle name.. the ties are that close.... for example, Prince Vincent. is. Vincent Frederik Minik Alexander. Princess Josephine is Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda; ... Minik and Ivalo being Greenland names.. this tradition goes back 4 centuries.

Thank you. That is lovely.

Am I wrong to think the problem is being inverted?

The US is (rightfully) upset about the amount of drugs, etc. coming in from Mexico because of the cartel. Then why don't they ensure those things can't get in?

Perhaps this is an oversimplification, but if I dont want my neighbour's dog coming into my house, it's just as much my responsibility to ensure it doesn't get in, as it is my neighbour's.

Look. How many of us have taken international flights? Everyone probably. At least to the countries I fly, baggage is not closely examined on the way OUT of the US.

It's examined on the way IN to a country. This is all a farce.

The problematic term is Native Americans.

We were here long before Amerigo Vespucci arrived. So we ARE the natives although the US government didn't recognize us as citizens until 1924. So the term Native Americans is BS on more than one level.

That being said, guess what? We have individual self-determination, so we get to call ourselves whatever we're comfortable with: some say Indian, some say Native American, some say Native, some say Indigenous.

I don't know what part of the world you're in, but am I wrong to think "Indian" is more a US term than a Canadian one? I lived very close to (and occasionally visited) a rez for years and almost everyone I interacted with called themselves "Native" or wore "Native Pride" hats. I have never come across an Indigenous person here in Canada who used the term "Indian". Though I imagine it may have been used before my time.
