Who have the Liberals actually got on their ballot for their new party leader this weekend?

Carney
Freeland

Anyone else?

I wonder who'll they'll select. In any case, that individual will be the Prime Minister immediately after the vote is done ... and maybe just never even give their digits to #47 to start with?

I think Carney is the favourite.

Will he be up to starting off with a complex trade war?

Only time will tell.

Another poor choice IMO.

I recently retired from a career working with seniors. His behaviour has for months reminded me of those seniors I encountered dealing with dementia.
There was a lot to discuss around the horrific treatment of Zelenskyy at the White House, but folks seemed to pass over the bizarre rambling on trump’s part - you know, his usual rambles that loop in Hilary, Joe Biden, Hunter Biden’s laptop - hey, maybe it was “the weave”, lol! But it sure looks like dementia to me. Sad!

This kind of bizarre behaviour can come from numerous tihngs.

Not being his diagnostician, I shall reserve judgement.

Everyone jumps to dementia but that is an umbrella term for a number of illnesses too.

I hope he’s not unwell but it seems highly likely. IMO

Well, tariffs delayed, but only for a month. No end in sight.
IMO Canada won't back down from our tariffs.

It'll be up to the new PM, next week, to react.

Not immediately, there will be an agreed transition date for the literal move (offices, homes), and involving a meeting with the Governor General to approve the new PM. But likely next week, Trudeau has hinted.

I can't see the Liberals going with Freeland, she openly defied Trudeau and forced his resignation...not behaviour that any party will ever reward, IMO.

Just for facts here; just compare those numbers below:
To Canada from USA to those of
From Canada TO USA ...

Me thinks someone has munfactured himself a border crisis on his northern border!! Fentanyl comes FROM China at the outset yet China got hit with mere 10% tariffs.

It's all just a smokeshow ... more likely, the tariffs on Canada actually have to do with, as Trump stated, him "going to bring our economy to ruin in order to make us his beloved 51st state."

1741296333491.webp

CBSA
US Customs and Border Protection
USCBP dot gov - Frontline Against Fentanyl

So, it's not about fentanyl (obvious by the stats) and the Trump-manufactured crisis on the northern border.

Nor is it about "Unfair Trade".

Fact: Trump didn't like NAFTA so as #45, Trump himself enacted tariffs (and Canada retaliated to them too, which US farmers till haven't recovered from).

Fact: Trump then designed, signed and implemented the USMCA in 2020.

Now: Trump breaches his VERY OWN signed deal by slamming 25% tariffs onto Canada. Canada then retaliates with 25% tariffs of their own. Yet -- "WE" Canadians are the problem? LOL. Such a great revisionist skillset.

Fact: If trade and a "fair deal" was what Trump is actually after, then why didn't he call Canada and Mexico to the table to re-do his very own deal?

Because that's not what it's about. The proof is in the pudding - today he delayed tariffs against Mexico which is obviously where the fentanyl x-border crisis is. He's only got 10% against China from where he knows the fentanyl originates.

It's all about annexation of us as the 51st State ... for our land and natural resources. He said it himself. He keeps saying it. How very, very democratic and diplomatic that isn't!!

Canadians aren't and won't take it laying down. Our country is not split 50/50.On this, we are united.

Apparently he ain't the "deal maker" he makes himself out to be.

Facts matter. Trump's alternate facts do not.

Elbows up.

Trump seems to be wavering again.
Is it the stock market tanking?
Is it the American farmers screaming for their fertilizer?
Is it the NE Americans concerned about their electricity supply?

Perhaps it wasn't wise to poke the moose. Canada and the USA each benefit from their relationship. They've been long-term friends and allies. Trump has tried to break that bond. Most Americans don't want that bond broken. Unfortunately, many Americans believe that Canada is 'taking advantage' of the USA. That's preposterous IMO.

Canadians are friends with Americans. Please don't let your President turn us into enemies. We both deserve better than that.

Unfortunately, many Americans believe that Canada is 'taking advantage' of the USA.

I don't see how you have to say "many" Americans. EVERYTHING is now being converted to absolute $$$signs, so it is more specifically Americans who are being fed and believe the new Narrative.

"all these countries are ripping us off", is not the answer to everything, over the history of the US. But it is all we will hear from now on.

What are Canadians going to do about this?
Will they quit snow-birding to Florida?
Will they quit summering the whole coast of Maine? In Summer, every other licence plate is Canadian!
Are there really truly products that you cannot live without on a personal level?

It will be interesting....
Feel free to speak up Northern Friends!! Many MORE Americans really want to know what you are thinking.

I really wish I knew more about Carney I know very little of him I don't like how Freeland quit but I understand it. But I hope that whoever comes in is strong enough to deal with trump. We all know trump would of loved if gretsky was running eugh jmvho

As a US citizen I plan to boycott anything coming from Canada or Mexico. Looking through my cabinets and my routine purchases, I don't see but one or two items that I have purchased in the last year. They were from Mexico, specialty food products.

I live on the east coast, fruit and vegetables are abundant even in winter months, our gas and oil prices are very low. We have more than enough lumber. There's actually a lumber company in my area that was purchased by Canadians. They only employ Canadians, rotating them in and out every 3 months and all the lumber is exported to Canada. All the Canadian workers have been extremely nice, so very polite and participate in many local activities. We've learned about their families, follow when they're returning. It's white oak, sort of a rare very strong oak.

I paid 2.50 for gas on Sunday, lowest in years.

I'm committed, we need to end drugs and illegal fentanyl from entering the US.

Moo

I am also on the East Coast and my local grocers only sell berries from Canada; raspberries, blackberries, blueberries. I'll have to take a look at where the fruit comes from (not a fruit eater) next time I'm out and about.

Honestly. I don't understand why the American people voted this man as their president.
Seriously, I don't mean to disrespect anyone, at all but not only is he a bully he is a criminal and American people think that's OK? That this is acceptable? A criminal, in the White House.
He will single handedly destroy America.

The American people deserve so very much more than this.

My parental have a trailer in the Glen on mt baker they used to go for the 48 hrs usually longer it's a great community we have been trying to figure out if we were keeping or selling this was before Christmas it's now being sold. We ve decided it's not worth the hassle. But we will miss the people . I have a aunt whose a snowbird I'm not sure what they are deciding yet it's a really hard decision because it's not the people or the communities fault. But they are decisions we really need to think about because everything is changed now and even when this drama is done things will still be changed there's no going back to how it was. Peace arch park has kind of lost its meaning now jmvho

I’m wondering if the President has had some sort of ‘medical event’ since entering office, seriously.

Bizarre behaviour, IMO.

1812

He's always been bizarre. I remember him well from the 70s to present. Yes, always mean, racist, misogynistic, narcissistic and bizarre.

You will find out though, we promise.

All in good time!

Well I just came back from a Mexican getaway. I will spend zero $$ in the US. And I have traditionally vacationed in 2 US States. For decades.

The exchange rate was awful before this war started, many people cancelled for that reason alone.

Now, there are more pressing reasons to buy Canadian.

I have friends and family in the US.

This is going to be hard on all of us, we won’t let it split us apart.

I think he just likes jerking people around and is trying to lead by bullying rather than diplomacy (or intelligence).

this is just so so true..... and yet all our time is being spent jerking to his jerking around.
He just loves chaos...and is a big part of his "platform".

Essentially, I just want him to stick with his tariffs... just so we all really seen how much gets screwed up. Seriously, we have all seen how parts and processes are just so merged everywhere.... getting things built takes such coordination within and among all three countries.... There is just so much back and forth with certain product sects---making cars is the obvious big example....

I just really hope Canada can do without us, just fine.....

I'm truly sorry for how this is going to impact American farmers such as yourself who didn't vote for T. Hopefully there are enough sensible Americans who can call a stop to this insanity.

I believe that T and his goons are deliberately creating chaos in the markets in order to create financial uncertainty and thereby manipulate the markets to their personal advantage. It's just one more way that the one percent will get wealthier at the expense of the common workers.

jmo

omg, @musicaljoke ... we do know just how capable they are to deliberately manipulate the chaos in general, and the markets specifically. But the silently growing benefit to the 1% may take time for the regulars to see. To really see.

It's anecdotal at this stage. And the media only reports about those who cancel trips, not those who go ahead.

But, in addition to 'because we're mad', there's also an extremely low Cdn dollar, like an all time low, so spending time in the US is already way more expensive than it's been for decades, plus US inflation.

People who bought 2nd homes during the US property collapse 10 or more years ago are selling now, because the prices have gone way up, and they are aging, and bonus when you convert to $$Cdn.

Many people already cut ties/arrangements during the Covid border closures, eg wintering RVers.

Like many people, I have long since arranged to only fly direct to Mexico, just to avoid US airport security.

ETA: sorry got my quoted posters mixed up

‘Not good enough’: Trump’s trade war continues after Trudeau call - National | Globalnews.ca. U.S. President Donald Trump said Canada’s efforts to tighten security at the border are “not good enough,” a day after triggering a North American trade war.

The Bully is one of his better titles. And it is quite disgusting how soooo many world leaders are just sucking up to him.
Of course, I know it is a game that they all have to play.........but it is just SOOOOO DISGUTING TO WATCH.
