I don't really understand about products being dumped in other countries. I assumed something would only be imported if someone (a distributor, presumably) orders it. But dumping sounds more like it's being forced on the receiver?

I think the idea being alleged as dumping is it's being offered at an unfairly low price - eg often associated with government subsidies - in order to put local competitors out of business...and then, potentially, raise prices after the competitors are all gone.

It's very much in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes tariffs are put on to please a certain group of voters, eg Wisconsin dairy farmers.

I wasn't aware Cdn dairy was being sold over the border. But many Canadians are no longer consuming as much dairy, so there might be a surplus now.

Yes, it has to be purchased by US grocery stores or manufacturers, now it will be 2.5x more expensive. Not sure why it's being traded south, I need to do some research.

I had to call my credit card company to claim an entry that I didn't recognize. The options had changed, and now include, "If you are calling to cancel a trip, press 1".

I am sad that it has come to this.

From what I understand, the US might import some Canadian cream during ice cream season. Likewise, Canada might occasionally import cream from the US. I don't believe that fluid milk crosses the border from Canada into the US with the exception of emergency supplies of milk formula for babies.

The way that unwanted USA milk would enter the Canadian supply chain is if Canadian milk costs more than USA milk. For example, if Canadian milk costs $2 per litre and USA milk costs $1 per litre, grocery stores will purchase/order that cheap USA milk.

That cheap USA milk will flood the market, no one will buy Canadian milk, and Canadian dairy producers will go out of business (bankrupt). When Canada no longer produces milk, the price of USA dairy will jump to $3 per litre.

Canadians will have no choice except to pay the higher price because they no longer have a dairy industry.

Friends, family, Disneyland, California redwoods, Niagara Falls, New York City .....

We used to risk the gun violence and just try to be alert and act safely, but with all of the hatred and division and the poor leadership and contagious diseases now it is so much more scary. And not really worth taking the risks if you don't have to.

I will miss seeing my US friends until ... who knows.

I was looking at a Cdn gov fact sheet, currently Canada both imports and exports (worldwide): cheese (mostly artisan/fine cheeses I think, I buy lots of European cheese), Cdn skim milk powder and things like whey protein used in protein powders.

So all of these are essentially manufactured, not fresh from dairy farms.

I guess the idea is just to prevent anything with Canadian dairy being sold in the US.

Glacier National Park,, the Zephyr, the Chief!!, Baton Rouge!, Santa Barbara, Boston, ..hell I even have a soft spot for Olathe , Kansas, why, I don't know, maybe it was a gorgeous creature at a diner there who was a born commedian, . all measled up, now .. and probably worse, god alone knows what else is lurking... measles is a gateway infectious disease, it paves the way for dreadful stuff...

IDK. I guess that's a long back story to why trade negotiations about dairy are hard.

But we're not in negotiations, we're in a trade war.

Trump can only apply tariffs to Canadian goods entering the US.

Canada can apply tariffs to American dairy entering Canada.

Yeah, I don't really see that dairy tariffs are going to be much of an issue. Lumber tariffs have been here before, so there is information available about the impact of tariffs on the lumber industry. It's going to be pretty difficult on both sides of the border.

The last time this happened, the US lumber distributors increased the price of American softwood lumber products to equal the cost of Canadian softwood products. That was a significant rise in cost especially for home builders.

Truly, truly horrific and what a useless, stupid short life of unremitting agony and confinement to contract polio out of ideology! it simply defies all parameters of normal human preception. ..It's as if people in the USA want to die, in the worst way possible!!
