Canada - USA Trade War commencing March 2025

Is it really a good idea for the USA to pick a fight with Canada when Canada has the ability to cut off electricity to 1/4 of USA states, and to shut down oil export - which is needed to heat homes and power all forms of transportation throughout the country? Donald is expecting Canada to play nice during war, but the more Donald escalates, the closer he moves to causing 13 states being severely compromised.

People in those states should be making a lot more noise telling Donald to quit it and find something more useful to do with his time.

"Manitoba Hydro will review contracts on energy exports to the United States, Kinew said Thursday, arguing the fact the U.S. tariffs are lower on energy exports "reveals an area where we have strength."

"When we look at those threats coming from Donald Trump's administration, and you've got the lower tariff level on electricity, energy, critical minerals, that's a tell.… [It's] something that they really, really need," he said. That means for Manitoba, hydro power is "a critical resource that we have," he said.
...

Manitoba Hydro sold $702 million worth of electricity to the U.S. in 2023, according to a Manitoba Bureau of Statistics summary.

"According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) the American states identified as importing the most electricity from Canada include New York, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Maine, California, Vermont, Nevada and Arizona."

I just have this particularly uncomfortable feeling that he would welcome any reason to declare a military action against Canada, or martial law in the US.

The recently-removed Commissioner of Social Security under President Biden made some concerning comments about what is going on with Social Security right now and he predicted there will be an interruption of the regular distribution of funds to something like 90 million Americans, due to staffing reductions that will impact the information systems that SS uses.

His advice: Save, save, save right now.

This bears repeating for two reasons. First, it demonstrates how ignorant the USA president is regarding foreign countries. Second, it illustrates that USA prefers propaganda over truth and fact.

Donald seems unaware of the fact that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned from his position a couple of months ago. Alternatively, Donald thinks that Canadians resign from a job and then immediately turn around and re-apply for that same job. He must think that Canadians are complete dunces to act so ridiculous. Donald expects someone - not sure who - to believe that the Prime Minister is responsible for illegally violating the free trade agreement and imposing 25% percent tariff tax on all exports from his own country.

What Donald says makes no sense in any context, yet 50% of people in the USA believe what he says. Why is that? Is it because they enjoy the bully mentality and feel energized when acting big and tough? What is it about Donald that makes people want to be just like him, to think like him, to speak like him and to agree with his word-salad?

From the mouth of the USA president:

"Believe it or not, despite the terrible job he’s done for Canada, I think that Justin Trudeau is using the Tariff problem, which he has largely caused, in order to run again for Prime Minister," Trump wrote in a follow-up post on his Truth Social account on Thursday. "So much fun to watch!"

Anderson Cooper had an interview with Freeland last night on CNN and I would believe Trump is truly afraid of having to deal with her, so he promotes the nonsense that Trudeau will be in charge.

Yesterday, I heard on local news that every point drop in the NYSE was reflected with a point increase in the European stock markets. That was followed by claims that Donald is not making the USA rich, he's making the EU rich!

He's also triggering a large movement in Canada to develop infrastructure in ways unseen for more than 50 years. All of this is good for the Canadian economy and futures markets.

Bottom line, Donald is making the EU and Canada great and rich while self-isolating and punishing the USA with unnecessary 25% tax.

"Not since the completion of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1971 have so many politicians, experts and ordinary Canadians been talking up major projects — everything from an east-west "energy corridor" to port expansions and rail upgrades — insisting the country needs to build, and build fast.

...
RSBM,

Buckle up for a pivot.

Canada's Bombardier & Global Dynamics, Europe's Airbus SE, ThyssenKrupp AG, BAE Systems, Thales SA, and Safran SA instead of the US' Boeing, Lockheed etc

New subs in collaboration with Germany & Norway

Our military planners are hard at work ... so 'elbows up.'

Stocks: ... ooops.

Do you think we would start replacing the f35 with the Saab gripen. Would the Saab be a better fit?

Crazy dystopian future ...

Of course - Donald would like nothing better than to start a full military invasion of Canada. He'll have to blow up major cities across the country to obtain an occupied territory, similar to the occupation of the Netherlands by Germany during WW2. There will be USA conscription, similar to Ukraine, where everyone - including fentanyl users - between specific ages will be forced into military service.

Gun smuggling from the USA into Canada will no longer be a criminal offence.

USA soldiers will be stationed at every Canadian city in the second largest country in the world. They will have to occupy government buildings, schools, post-secondary institutions, airports large and small, and more. Every USA soldier will have to defend against gangs of Canadians. They will have to arrest and shoot everyone who speaks against Donald. Prison industry will explode as Donald arrests and tortures people who disagree.

Canadians will not sit quiet during any assault from the USA, something that Donald does not seem to understand.

Nobody, in whatever language they speak is ever, ever going to call it the Gulf of America. As far as the rest of the world is concerned it will be , always has been, always is, the Gulf of Mexico... only MAGA has a weird outlook on this, and they can mumble away in any manner they choose, it changes nothing.

Of course , that won't stop Australians calling the Pacific the Australia Ocean.. and we are not stopping there, the Indian Ocean is really the Australian Ocean, too, and along with that, just to hit the trifecta, the Great Southern Ocean is now the Australian Ocean... you heard it here first, folks .

We might leave the South China sea as it is, maybe.. it all depends.....
What is scary is his followers believe that renaming it Gulf of America changed the location of the border and makes America safer. I know people who believe this is true.

Most of what Trump's administration has done since taking office has seemed performative to me -- designed to provoke reactions rather than to actually govern, solve problems, or improve people's lives.

Some of what I'm reading suggests that his next step in his plan might be to invoke martial law. In order to have even the meagerest ostensible reason for this, he is claiming, and then possibly "pretending" to do, some of these extremely dramatic and nonsensical things such as changing the US border with Canada, taking over the Panama Canal or "buying Greenland."

I'm tempted to think that his goal is to provoke riots, which will then "allow" him to declare martial law. 😡

MOO
Yes. I agree. All he needs are loyalists in JAG who are the lawyers that can stop martial law. And if IIRC he's fired the top brass and we all know what happens next.

1812 refers to the War of 1812.

The only other war between the two countries.

We (The British) won.

Remember Laura Secord?

She isnt just a chocolate shop.

Do you think we would start replacing the f35 with the Saab gripen. Would the Saab be a better fit?

Of course I do! They support an independant, free and sovereign Canada. Free from the very undemocratic threats of Donald Trump's Imperialistic Expansionism. Great paint job the Swedes have done!

Well, to be fair, SSI and Medicare have been exhausted before Trump. It would be nice to see who tapped into them the most, and for what purposes.

Trump is doing and saying very impulsive things, but we have heard them before. Himself, let’s admit, he is the consequence of our longstanding economic policy, not the reason.

Commissioner of SSI under Biden ought to better tell what the available funds were on his watch. It is very easy to blame it on Trump now, but Biden’s economy was not managed stellarly as well. Here, i said it. It was poorly run under Trump during his first term, but at least he can say that partially, COVID intervened. Without COVID, it would have been only lackluster. But in general, let’s be honest, it is the economy that rules. And, to be fair, it was not only that Trump was voted in this time. He was voted out last time, so, economy. This time, it was the Democratic Party voted out, and it is economy, too.

Our parties should stop throwing mud at each other trying to get elected. They should stop spending the taxpayers’ money on their opponents. MAGA is not a good idea although I see several world countries running on nationalistic agenda. Who is successful? The ones who inherited successful economy. Can we find in the country, or borrow someone like Manmohan Singh, who was the father of Indian economy? (The reason I am mentioning India so often is that I was shocked at its rapid economic development. It was all Manmohan Singh).

to those boycotting american products - what are you doing about american tech? :)

i found i’m really not buying much from the US in the first place. but not using american tech seems to be the only tricky part!

i deleted my facebook, instagram and twitter a while ago already, before the US elections even because i didn’t like spending time there anymore

i’ve now switched to a european web browser and search engine, and switched from chatgpt to le chat (french)…

but whatsapp & youtube seem tricky to replace for now! i use whatsapp with all my friends and family, and i use youtube for language learning. i think maybe this is the best i can do for now, and when a good (european or canadian or other ally) alternative gains popularity i’ll make the switch!
I've cancelled Amazon Prime and X. Netflix is going next. Regarding streaming I might pick up BritBox, CBC Gem, Crave.

For my recent birthday my son bought me what he called an 'anti-capitalist starter kit'....not so much focused on anti-American, but anti-oligarchs. It included subscriptions to Kagi (to replace google search engine) and Nebula (a video platform, that doesn't have ads). I don't find Nebula to be a true replacement to YouTube, since the volume and range of content doesn't meet all of my needs. But there is a lot of quality content on there, particularly on topics like global warming, urbanism, etc.

Next thing on my agenda to to look for alternatives to Audible.

Audible, Kindle and Youtube are how I get access to great ideas and stories from around the world, including Canada. I'm not giving them up.

But raises the issue - Canada currently has a surplus of physical trade goods (because oil), but the balance of non-physical goods we pay for: entertainment, etc, is overwhelming from the US.

Amazon Prime is less prime than it used to be tbh. I use Amazon because (the irony) the prices on Temu are higher. But, there are tons of competing companies.

Netflix I had a subscription to but seldom used. When they increased the cost I cancelled it because I didn’t use it enough even with old subscription.

If there are anti-monopoly ideas, it is not bad as in general, there may be a lot of startups.

I seldom used Twitter and almost never use X but I am not required to subscribe? How so?

It's high, but it has never been applied and isn't likely to ever be applied.
JDG, what is 1812?

@musicaljoke .... I responded to @JDG with the following. I'm posting for you too....cause it is fun and silly.... ala 2025.

I don't use Netflix or x . I've stopped prime and Amazon. I've got to find a replacement for FB but I'm west coast and my grandkids are in the prairies we talk daily threw FB. I've been using proton for emails for a while now. So I only have FB to purge once I figure a way with the kids

Donald has been looking back in history to the time when the border between Canada and the USA was established, and trying to find a reason to claim that the agreement should be torn up and thrown away. He does not want to renegotiate the border, he wants it eliminated. Donald, like Putin, wants to use force to steal land.

Russia is the largest country in the world followed by Canada. Next is China.

Russia, Canada, China. It's obvious what Donald wants - he want to be bigger and better than Russia and China. He's jealous of Canada's rank. It's that simple. He's like a cry baby who has a smaller bowl of ice cream so he has a tantrum, and then lashes out with force and steals all the ice cream. Then he will shout that he's the king of the castle. He wants to sit in a room and gloat over all the land and natural resource wealth that he has stolen from Canadians so he can feel like a big shot with Russia and China.

USA + Canada = the largest country in the world

And the real difference is that the Donald does not know how to play the long long strategic game.... he has to blurt everything out, so he can feel important, and make sure his total chaos frightens everyone.

Russia and China ARE good at the long game....... Down the road...they could destroy him.
I am just hoping his outrageous blurting and blabbering will, at least, get other world leaders (the normal ones, like Canada EU Australia etc) will quit trying to butter him up rather than speaking out themselves....

It's a new world out there---the world MUST speak out and up.

My Amazon Prime is paid up to December, but I cancelled Kindle Unlimited, Audible, and Paramount plus which I subscribed thru Prime. Next on the chopping block - Netflix. I’m buying all my books from Indigo now, or local sellers. I highly recommend Britbox! British shows are so well written and acted.

For anyone who can’t live without certain subscriptions, you can cancel for a few months, then subscribe for, say a month to catch up, cancel again.

Heh, nicely done. Canadians celebrate the war of 1812 in song ... with apologies for the typical Canadian humour ... oh dear. Gotta love the Arrogant Worms.

This is a link to CNN which is an approved source.
You can find the whole speech of the senator, with subtitles too, on many YouTube sources.
I found the whole speech (not the piece) it interesting and in fact, explaining a lot.
