What is scary is his followers believe that renaming it Gulf of America changed the location of the border and makes America safer. I know people who believe this is true.
That's hilarious! Hadn't thought of it like that but of course you're right. By renaming water on USA google maps, the USA thinks they own the water. Simpletons.

It's called the Gulf of Mexico everywhere else in the world.

Trudeau should dictate that Canadians will call the Gulf of Mexico "Donald's Puddle" ... no different than Donald renaming water for internal USA use.

Audible, Kindle and Youtube are how I get access to great ideas and stories from around the world, including Canada. I'm not giving them up.

But raises the issue - Canada currently has a surplus of physical trade goods (because oil), but the balance of non-physical goods we pay for: entertainment, etc, is overwhelming from the US.
Everyone around the world looks to Hollywood for entertainment. That's all it's known for. Can't get around that.

Is it really a good idea for the USA to pick a fight with Canada when Canada has the ability to cut off electricity to 1/4 of USA states, and to shut down oil export - which is needed to heat homes and power all forms of transportation throughout the country? Donald is expecting Canada to play nice during war, but the more Donald escalates, the closer he moves to causing 13 states being severely compromised.

People in those states should be making a lot more noise telling Donald to quit it and find something more useful to do with his time.

"Manitoba Hydro will review contracts on energy exports to the United States, Kinew said Thursday, arguing the fact the U.S. tariffs are lower on energy exports "reveals an area where we have strength."

"When we look at those threats coming from Donald Trump's administration, and you've got the lower tariff level on electricity, energy, critical minerals, that's a tell.… [It's] something that they really, really need," he said. That means for Manitoba, hydro power is "a critical resource that we have," he said.
...

Manitoba Hydro sold $702 million worth of electricity to the U.S. in 2023, according to a Manitoba Bureau of Statistics summary.

"According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) the American states identified as importing the most electricity from Canada include New York, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Maine, California, Vermont, Nevada and Arizona."

Bingo!

I replaced Audible and Kindle with my local public library. YouTube I still have.

I don't use Netflix or x . I've stopped prime and Amazon. I've got to find a replacement for FB but I'm west coast and my grandkids are in the prairies we talk daily threw FB. I've been using proton for emails for a while now. So I only have FB to purge once I figure a way with the kids
FB is not a subscription. Some of my friends mentioned Bluesky. I am neither here nor there tbh.

i think with something like facebook it’s a case of “if it’s free, you are the product”! your data can be sold, and without people going on facebook no companies would pay to advertise there

(i’ve always been curious how much these free platforms exactly made off of me! i have no idea)

I've cancelled Amazon Prime and X. Netflix is going next. Regarding streaming I might pick up BritBox, CBC Gem, Crave.

For my recent birthday my son bought me what he called an 'anti-capitalist starter kit'....not so much focused on anti-American, but anti-oligarchs. It included subscriptions to Kagi (to replace google search engine) and Nebula (a video platform, that doesn't have ads). I don't find Nebula to be a true replacement to YouTube, since the volume and range of content doesn't meet all of my needs. But there is a lot of quality content on there, particularly on topics like global warming, urbanism, etc.

Next thing on my agenda to to look for alternatives to Audible.

Amazon, Washington Post, Twitter, all gone. Netflix going. Keeping BritBox! YouTube I will probably keep for all the puppy and kitten videos that keep me sane. So just YouTube and BritBox, and I'm side-eyeing YouTube.

If you like documentary, history or nature type videos, I recommend Curiosity Stream.

Edit to add: Snoopster, our public libraries have audio books. I use that instead of Audible. Is the same available for you?

This is a link to CNN which is an approved source.
You can find the whole speech of the senator, with subtitles too, on many YouTube sources.
I found the whole speech (not the piece) it interesting and in fact, explaining a lot.
That is the sentiment in Canada too. Everyone can see what's going on in the USA except the people in the USA. Those people are bombarded with daily propaganda from the president, and that's all they want to hear. They are winning, they are getting rich, why are the best.

Who cares that scientists can no longer discuss their work without permission from the president? Who cares that virus tracking is no longer a priority for vaccine development? Who cares that a car salesman has top security clearance to gut social programs and all financial and privacy safety nets for the USA people? Who cares that their president has used tariffs to increase their cost of living? Who cares that they have a dictatorship government? Everyone except the people in the USA care.

That's great! Laying it all out, linear sequential, making it easy to understand exactly how Donald's government decisions are towards one goal of total control for himself and the people close to him. Will it make a difference - that's the big question. Will people come together and do something, or will they sit back and believe that all those decisions somehow benefit them or their country?

Well they do but mostly I think these are the sites that pop up and where you can buy. This is what FB was bad at as they lost the adolescent group fast enough but now they manage well. Overall nothing is free and if the technology exists to know about you - let us be naive, it is everywhere. SM still provides access to free information but the problem is, anything can be cut off. Anywhere.

Peace Arch Park - Wikipedia. In BC we have peace arch park shared between Blaine Washington and Surrey British Columbia. You don't need a passport there you can visit your American friends there . That shows the friendships we had between the 2 country's. I'm not sure we should be this comfortable anymore jmoo

People in the USA are a very divergent group. Even within the state.

Someone understands and may be scared.

Someone has no ability to reflect on the reason for being disenfranchised but then, they are unhappy that some migrants are getting merely 2 dollars less per hour than them… Between the religiosity and the innate conservatism, people don’t analyze and maybe, don’t even follow the news?

We still can. Remember, Western Washington is one of the blue areas in the country. And, give or take, unless they forbid it, we have to help each other, both BC and WA have fires, are in seismogenic area, whatnot. Alberta is close and while it is not homogeneous, also in our geographic zone.

Bluesky was mentioned to me today. I quit FB a decade ago . Bluesky is fact checked I'm told.

True true .plus there's still the US town of point roberts only way in or out is threw Canada. The changes daily are just unnerving and just frustrating

All very sad, two countrys that have fought and died along side each other in wars and should be the best of friends now at odds. Its hard to think we are actually at this point. Like imagine telling someone things would be this way a few years ago. No one could have imagined it.

Instead of Audible, use the Libby app -- it connects to your library cards (as many as you might have) and lets you borrow ebooks or digital audiobooks. Free, just like the physical library items you check out.

On rare occasions there is something I want that is ONLY available on Audible, so I'll activate my account to get that. But there is no reason to pay every month when you can get most books for no cost.

I have a bluesky account but also a Twitter/X. I get valuable information from trusted sources I follow on X. As soon as they start to make their posts available on Bluesky, I stop following them on X, and I'll close my account when I can get the information elsewhere.

I also do have Facebook -- I boycotted it for decades, only made an account after covid appeared, so that I can be a bit less isolated, make use of the local community bulletin boards etc. Of course I follow folks I support, and even post (funny memes, mostly), but I don't post personal information, no photos of my restaurant meals, etc. 😎

Oh, I know people who live in point Roberts or Blaine. Really, there are border towns or that enclave where people shop in Canadian stores. Crazy.

Changes are: unnerving, frustrating, unpredictable. My best allegory is this plane that flew from Minneapolis and landed on its back in Toronto.

“Flipping upside down: "Everything just kind of went sideways"”

Yes, our library has audio books and that is what most people in my book club use. But I paid for the range and availability of Audible. So many popular books have long waiting lists. I could get any book when I wanted it. That's just an excuse on my side. I'm going to give up the convenience. I'm just doing research into alternatives.

I believe Kobo does audiobooks. They're Canadian and Japanese.
