"Police closed in on Juarez and waited for him Friday outside a Manhattan restaurant where he worked as a dishwasher. He told them he killed the girl at the apartment of his sister – Juarez-Ramirez. Then, the sister, who is now dead, helped dispose of the body. Kelly said they took a livery cab from Queens to Manhattan where they dumped the cooler.

The cooler, which contained the girl’s remains and unopened cans of Coke, was later discovered by construction workers.

Kelly called the arrest a superb case of detective work, and he was proud of his officers. Juarez was being held on murder charges and was awaiting arraignment.

“For me, it makes you proud to be a member of this organization – they were unrelenting.”

The detectives assigned to the case were instrumental in organizing a burial in a Bronx cemetery for the girl in 1993. Hundreds attended the funeral; Reznick gave the eulogy. The girl was dressed in a white frock and buried in a white coffin.

The detectives paid for the girl’s headstone that reads: “Because we care.”

The Court of Appeals, in a 4-3 decision, ruled against Times reporter Frances Robles’ effort to quash a subpoena from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that requires her to testify about a jailhouse interview she had in 2013 with Conrado Juarez, the suspect charged with murder in the case.

Juarez, 54, was charged in October 2013 with the second-degree murder of Anjelica Castillo in the notorious 1991 child slaying. Police claim that Juarez, a restaurant dishwasher, admitted to smothering the girl in an attempt at silencing her screams as he was sexually assaulting her in his sister's apartment.

Days after he was arrested, Juarez was interviewed by Robles on Rikers Island and, among other things, denied killing the child and said his confession was coerced. He said the girl died after falling down the stairs and he had only helped his sister dispose of the body.

The man police say raped and killed the 4-year-old girl known for decades only as “Baby Hope,” has died, authorities said.

Conrado Juarez, 58, died Sunday evening in criminal custody at the Montefiore Nyack Hospital in Nyack, New York, said Janine Kava, a spokeswoman for the New York State Commission of Correction. He’d previously been held at the Rockland County Jail.

Kava declined to comment on the manner and cause of Juarez’s death, saying a commission investigation was underway.
