Any Claim for Loss of Income? Living Exp, Travel $ ?
@otto
Putting aside any connection w monopoly money, I wonder about any back-injury-claim filing which might have resulted in a "small settlement for a few months of job loss."
ATM I can’t find your excellent chronology of events (TYVM) to help untangle my brain jumble, so hope you can excuse time glitches. Several possibilities for claims generally, but not seeing a probability for LM to explain source of living & travel expenses.
--- A Claim for Workers Compensation? Provides wage replacement (& medical benefits for injury) to employees injured in the course of employment.
Seems unlikely imo his professed back injury was WORK RELATED, giving rise to a WC claim. IIRC, at time professed injury LM had already parted ways from TrueCar.
--- A Claim for Disability Insurance thru private insurance policy, either thru TrueCar employment or as an individual policy purchaser? Insures the employee’s/beneficiary's earned income against risk that a disability prevents employee from core work functions, altho usu. does not pay benefit at 100% of earned income. Although a stereotypical 20+ y/o may not buy coverage (believing in own invincibility. Well, didn’t we all at that age? Lol ), it’s possible he did. If so, policy may have wait period – up to 3 to 6 mo.- of disability before payments are initiated on a monthly basis, not a lump sum type “settlement.”
--- A Claim for Social Security Disability Insurance? Monthly benefits to people w a medically determinable physical or mental disability restricting their ability to be employed. Only pays benefits in cases in which the disability is expected to last at least one year or result in death." Possibly for LM? IDK
--- A Claim for Unemployment Insurance/Benefits? Generally paid by state govts, funded largely by st. & fed payroll taxes levied on employers, to an employee who has become unemployed through NO FAULT of their own.
I've read differing versions of his separation from TrueCar, but back injury does not seem to be relevant.
1. LM (may have) simply QUIT (from boredom, what-ev). If so, no UI/B benefit for him.
2. TrueCar (may have) terminated him "FOR CAUSE."
If so, no dough. TY,

Johnnie Cochran.

3. LM was one of 100+ employees laid off in June 2023. Then a UI/B waiting period, maybe a couple weeks? If ex-employees were/would be eligible for UI/B, IIUC they would also have to be available for & accept offers of suitable work. Was LM? IIUC UI/B is paid every two weeks, so not lump sum type “settlement.” Per a veeery quick peek at CA website,* may be paid for only 26 weeks.
--- If, as a one of the 100+ ppl laid off, LM was provided a SEVERANCE PACKAGE, that may have included sufficient $ for LM to roam, esp’ly in any lower cost destinations, for multiple months. Or maybe not sufficient in & of itself, IDK.
Personally not seeing any back INJURY factoring into the equation to gin up $ for LM, but I may be overlooking something.
Even from his relatively brief CAREER, LM may - emphasis on may - have squirreled away enough acorns (hi to
@INfisherman) to pay for his post-employment living expenses & travels.
A person serving as trustee (related to LM or not) may have disbursed TRUST funds to him or that same person may have reached into own pocket to give LM to live on for months.
IDK but doubt any back injury claim settlement paid LM’s way since his TrueCar days.
Welcoming clarifications or corrections to ^ ideas as ICB Wrong.
