Now back from lunch, Emily States is continuing to testify for prosecutors. She's talking about how the dispatchers ran Mangione's name through databases to see if he had a criminal record. The first dispatcher spelled his name wrong: "MANGIAN."

MANGIONE UNDER CONSTANT WATCH: A witness for the state, CO Thomas Rivers from State Prison (SCI Huntingdon), a Level 4 out of 5 maximum-security facility (with 5 being the highest), testified that his supervisor ordered him to document Luigi Mangione’s movements seven times per hour under “constant watch.” He said he was told they did not want another “Epstein situation.”

Mangione was moved from Blair County Jail to state prison for increased security, to limit communication with other inmates, prevent media leaks, and ensure safety. He describes Mangione's cell with a concrete bed, desk and chair, and toilet in the corner. Rivers testified he had access to books, but no other entertainment when he was housed at SCI Huntingdon from Dec 9-19.

Rivers testified that Mangione was on his bed in his cell, and asked him where he was from after hearing him speak to another officer (Rivers speaks with an English? accent). They began to talk about traveling to Vietnam and Thailand. Rivers said he brought up a gang fight with lady boys, and different mental states in 3rd world countries compared to the West. He said Mangione mentioned those people experience a level of suffering that we don’t have, and that the less people have, the happier they are. Rivers testified that he didn't think this conversation had any relevance to the alleged crimes that had been committed.

Rivers also said they spoke about the difference between private healthcare and national healthcare, but Mangione did not offer any opinions. He doesn't remember who brought up the conversation, but said it was "casual."

According to Rivers, the perception from social media was determining what happened and he told him what he had seen- TV News Media was reporting the crime, and social media was talking about what's wrong with the system etc. Rivers also said that Mangione said he was disappointed he was being compared to Ted Kaczynski (he only had previously reviewed one of his books, per Mangione). It's unclear how Mangione knew of this comparison though, since Rivers did not share anything about this and Mangione didn't have access to the news. Rivers said Mangione asked him if the media was focused on him as a person, or the crime that was committed.

Rivers recalls having "casual, natural" conversations with Mangione at SCI Huntingdon. Mangione told him about his "travels to Vietnam and Thailand" and "fights between gangs of ladyboys."Mangione, lightly shaking his head, seemed to giggle at that.

CO Rivers said he also discussed literature with Mangione-Orwell, Huxley...and Mangione recommended "The Doors of Perception," by Huxley.

CO Rivers said Mangione never expressed any pain or discomfort when he was in custody- he described him as calm and logical. Mangione leaned over in his chair, and took notes as Rivers said this.

More:

"He vocalized to me that he was disappointed that he was being compared to Ted Kaczynski, because someone saw he reviewed one of his books on Goodreads or Google or something."

"He asked me if the media was focused on him as the person or the crime that was committed."

Officer Rivers said Mangione recommended a book to him: Aldous Huxley's "The Doors of Perception."

"Did you look into it?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Don't care."

Mangione shakes his head from the defense table.
