Cross-Examination of CO Thomas Rivers of SCI Huntingdon by Karen Agnifilo:
Angifilo confirms with Rivers that Mangione was not a typical inmate, he was a pre-trial detainee (which Rivers said was rare), and confirmed they would have "two-way" conversations- Mangione wasn't just standing at the door shouting things at him- Rivers confirmed it was a two-way conversation.
Agnifilo asks if Rivers was trying to make Mangione calm and comfortable, and he says he's not really sure. She asks if he was nice and/or calm, and he agrees. Angifilo asks if they did in fact speak about going to Vietnam and Thailand, and he said yes. She said, are you sure he said Vietnam? Rivers said yes. Agnifilo says, "interesting," almost under her breath.
Karen Agnifilo asks Rivers if he's familiar with Miranda warnings, and he says yes.
Agnifilo: "You said multiple times, you said you didn't care. What did you mean by that"
Rivers: "I don't care about the case. Anything pre-trial.."
Agnifilo: "I'm just trying to understand because you're having a conversation with him. Talking about mugworts? Do you remember telling him that you did this to have haluncinatory type dreams?"
Rivers: "Yes."
Agnifilo: "Do you remember telling him that a gnome came to you in a dream on mugworts?"
OBJECTION
Agnifilo: "You say you don't care but you certainly shared a lot of opinions with him about healthcare and other things...
.................
Agnifilo: "So you only remember his side of the conversation and not yours?"
OBJECTION
Judge: "Sustained, no more comments"
Agnifilo hands Rivers a document/report that he reportedly wrote for safety purposes when Mangione was his inmate. She notes it says things like, "Laying on Bed, "Standing by Door," but there is nothing about talking. "You didn't write down that you spoke?"
Rivers: "No."
Agnifilo: "Do you remember Mr. Mangione telling you he was upset that law enforcement was leaking things to the media?"
OBJECTION. SUSTAINED. Defense asks to approach the bench.
