MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – The CEO of UnitedHealthcare was killed in a Midtown shooting Wednesday morning, sources told PIX11 News.

Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just before 7 a.m. near a hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, sources said. Video posted to Citizen showed police tape on the Midtown street as police arrived at the scene.

He was rushed to an area hospital and later died. Thompson was in New York City for an investors meeting at a Hilton hotel, according to sources.

The shooting is being investigated as a possibly targeted hit, sources said.

Looks like a Hugo Boss Cormina (I don’t know if they make that style this season) or Moncler Lez Field jacket (that’s really pushing it re price)
here's a pricey J.Crew:

much more reasonable similar:

not sure if he is just preppie, or decided that wearing decent clothing would subject him to less scrutiny overall

What's known:
  • Bus travel: The suspect traveled via Greyhound bus to New York before the shooting. That bus started its route in Atlanta, and authorities do not know whether the suspect boarded it in that city or elsewhere. The suspect was seen on surveillance camera getting off the bus at around 9 p.m. on November 24 and walking through the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
  • Fake ID: Police believe the gunman arrived in New York City on November 24 — 10 days before the shooting — and checked into an Upper West Side hostel. The suspect left the hostel on November 29 and then used a fake New Jersey driver’s license when checking back in on November 30. The suspect is believed to have stayed in a multi-person room with two other males.
  • Flirting reveals clue: A woman working at the hostel told authorities that, at one point, she asked the man to lower his mask while flirting with him. This is when photos of him smiling were captured, which were later released by police.
  • Potential sources of DNA: Police have been able to get one fingerprint from the water bottle that the suspected gunman left behind at the site of the shooting — but it’s smudged, making it less conclusive. Authorities found the bottle and a phone near the scene of the shooting that could have belonged to the gunman and may have been dropped as he fled the scene.
  • Footage helps trackers: Investigators are using footage to help them track the suspect’s movements in New York City. One surveillance video shows what appears to be the suspect on West 55th Street before the fatal shooting. Another video appears to show the suspect on New York City’s West 85th Street at around 7 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

Okay, I'm confused. I'm watching Court TV this evening and they're doing a timeline of the murder and the escape. So they keep showing a video of a guy purporting to be the killer, on a bike and WITHOUT the backpack. I'm assuming this is on his way to Central Park? Yet all reports are that he left the backpack IN the park and the authorities are examining that now. That doesn't make sense. Help me out here.
----------------

That would have been him riding on W 85th street away from the park, AFTER having entered the park and ditching the pack.

Regarding suicide.

I don't think he would commit suicide. He comes across too cocky to me. And if he is caught and goes to trial, I think this guy would bask in the spectacle of being some sort of hero in a lot of the public's eye.

I agree.

The shooter went to so much trouble to escape, it seems somewhat unlikely that he'd commit suicide. But I'm not ruling it out completely. He's already behaved way outside the norm. Maybe he just wanted to know he could get away.

I am behind the bus escape theory.
My question is where he might be now, still on a bus?. He is tired, hungry, thirsty and needs shelter from the weather. All this and might know there is a photo of him circulating. Where can he safely go or hide?

Oh yes, I agree. The way he handled the gun jamming, I’d say he could walk around in NYC right now. No fear.

A part of me is wondering if the backpack is gonna be like Al Capones vault…I would have dropped that gun in a sewer or trash can vs. put it in a backpack and leave it in a park…

JMO, based on his escape route and other elements:

Back to his home in New Jersey.

Thanks for that!
What confused me was Court TV was showing an overhead map with the suspect's route leaving the scene and going north towards the park and at the same time showing the video of him on the bike without the backpack. I swore that's what they were showing.

I truly love that all these years later, we still get a kick out of that epic real-time TV flop featuring none other than Geraldo Rivera...

I'm sure they get it twisted up from time to time. They're trying to keep up with all kinds of incoming data, making graphics, showing videos, and sounding really stern and authoritative :)

One thing I think we can count on -- he will do the unexpected. JMO.

He was out of the city on Wednesday, same day as the killing. Who knows how long he was on the bus, or busses, trains or even flights since then, and where he might be.

I think he went home, hoping in vain that he had somehow gotten away with this. I suspect he's been closely monitoring the coverage, so it wouldn't surprise me if he has since taken off.

Police Find Backpack in Central Park, a Possible Link to Gunman Who Killed C.E.O.

From the NYT live update page linked, bolding by me.

“We do not have his name,” Chief Kenny said of the suspect. But, he said, “at this point, we believe he acted alone.”

I happen to believe the same, which makes it even more interesting to me how accurate all of his timekeeping was, frankly. It's like he had inside information, but maybe it was just his own meticulous, dedicated research.

Curious how long this planned murder had been brewing, for sure.

No matter the eventual outcome, he pulled it off, seemingly against all odds.
