I think it can be pretty difficult. I remember in the 2015 Sacramento mass shooting it took them like 4 months to get into the phone, unsuccessfully sued Apple for help getting into it, and it was an iPhone 5C - let alone now when you can have a much longer or character-based password.

Yesterday I watched a Real Housewives of Salt Lake City episode where the one family had security at a Bat Mitzvah. (And because it was the Real Housewives drama, they had to be used to escort an unhinged attendee out). If wealthy individuals hire private security for a simple party/celebration, it seems likely that a major corporate event like this one would also have its own hired security. Especially given the fact that a lot of execs like this have their own private security detail (something i just learned with this case).

So, was there security in place inside/outside the Hilton for this conference? Or, was there going to be and they hadn't arrived yet? Would the average adult know that conferences like this usually have security, if they indeed do? If so, I think it's very possible the gunman didn't know if he'd personally survive this, but did it anyway. Maybe he's as surprised as everyone else he hasn't been caught or killed yet.

It's been reported widely that UHC did have security for the conference. They just weren't with BT on his walk to the conference.

There is close to 0% chance that if BT set up a suicide that he would have the guy use that particular gun. He would want something more efficient. He wouldn't want to be shot in the leg and wait for the guy to reload.

I believe that gun was used soley for it's remarkably quiet "silencer".
Edit to add, the gun did not just happen to be available or already owned or possessed by anyone that used it to euthanize or slaughter animals. Too much of a coincidence.
If there had been any bodyguards, assuming they would be armed, the shooter would never have gotten off more than one shot. We haven't yet heard much about how that came about or if security was scheduled to be there (I mean actually walking with him). He certainly wouldn't have been able to kill two men and not have been shot himself.MOO

The shooter may be aware of NYC's shot detectors, but even if he knew or thought that none were in that area, several loud shots would have drawn much more attention.

There is also a pilot program for detecting guns on the subway.

No proof right now that was a legitimate phone call, rather than a fake call to look busy.

I'm married to a man from Minnesota and he absolutely would walk across the street without a coat in 28 degree weather. It wouldn't even be a thought.

Also consider not only the very short distance he had to walk, but hours inside a warm conference room when he got there. A coat would just be something else to bother with, and it wasn't necessary.

Heh, us Minnesotans are hardy. I myself have been guilty of being somewhat underdressed for the temperature. And there really are guys who wear shorts in the winter—an article was even written about it in The Atlantic lol

I think it’s more likely he either surveilled the place or had an accomplice inform him of the guard’s presence or absence. Maybe sent them a distraction?

It is a very exclusive hotel - there must be some security there. There’s plenty of armed guards at the Chanel store on rodeo drive (as an example), you’d think this place would have a number of them.

IMO - BT was going to be on video calls/taped. Careful attention would be given to color of his clothing vs background in the room where he is presenting. And others suggested it was the corporate color blue.

There are people who manage this type of process and thought is given to production. From an experience at prior employer for example, they would NOT have execs wear crisp bright white shirts as it caused something they call burn or glow. They would have shirts like slightly tea stained, there were special shirts just for the corporate videos. Some stripes or contrasts also forbidden.

Dark blue, grey suits … more finance / corporate. Midwest insurance … the blue prob exactly right

I'm thinking the bright blue because it's an investor meeting and he is the man who will be asked questions - might as well be easy to find. It shows openness, imo. I am not a fan of that suit, but I do think it was a powerplay (and maybe a little midwestern willingness not to be cool).

I am absolutely shocked that we don’t have a public name at this point. That is actually crazy to me.

Just a few random thoughts:

1. When I saw his face, I thought he looked like Nev Schulman (Catfish). Nev is German-Jewish, Russian-Jewish, Polish-Jewish, and Romanian-Jewish according to wiki.

2. I initially thought that someone close to BT was behind this, but now I’m at the place where either the police can’t make that determination until they identify him, or they have ruled it out completely. I think if they had any info that showed he was working with someone closely related to BT, that we would be hearing more rumors about his personal life. We are 4 days in an I haven’t seen a single report from someone “close to the family” sharing some sort of gossip.

3. Now I’m starting to lean towards the whole Unibomber, Eric Rudolph type of killer - someone with a political motivation. If this is the case, I would expect that his hit list is longer and the investors meeting was more the target than BT himself. I would also think we would get some sort of communication out of him when he is settled into a safe place. This type of killer usually wants their message to be interpreted how they meant it to be, since that’s the whole point. If this is his motivation, he has been quite successful. Other CEOs are living in fear and he has certainly gotten their attention.

4. I absolutely love that a woman will be this man’s undoing. What a win for the girlies. Even the most calculated, laser-focused man on a mission can’t resist our charms

Probably unpopular opinion, but I’ll share.
I don’t think he was flirting like we think he was. He had to show his face to get the room. I think he knew that.
Makes me wonder if it’s LE tactic to try to rattle him (kinda like tickling the wire) to make him appear stupid and not in control.

The way the media and pundits talk about this flirting moment is telling.
He could have been checking in and going along with the flirting and then she says “let me see your pretty face” as she’s checking his ID, instead of “please pull your mask down so that I can confirm your identity”.
It could be as simple as that.
She’d had to confirm especially since this hostel doesn’t allow guests with residences within a 75 mile radius.

Why was he sharing his room with two others? If he was a professional hitman, he would have enough money to stay somewhere where he wouldn’t have to share a room. Is that all he could afford maybe?

IMO, he didn’t want to stay at the hostel. Staying with roommates in like a bunk bed dorm style accommodation without any privacy doesn’t fit his MO at all, and makes it difficult for him to plan something like this. I think that’s why he kept to himself, kept the mask on the whole time, said nothing to his roommates. He didn’t want to give them anything to go back to police with.

I also don’t think it had to do with finances. He could’ve stayed and I’m sure would’ve preferred to stay in a hotel room in midtown near where BT would be. The problem is very few (if any) of the major hotels accept cash. They’re also riddled with surveillance (lobby’s, yes, but also elevators, every hallway, etc). We haven’t heard anything about him having a stolen debit card, just the one fake ID. That’s not enough to check into a traditional hotel, and he knew it. The hotel needs a card on file for incidentals. He doesn’t have that. So, to avoid not sticking out (paying cash and somehow convincing the hotel to allow him to pay an incidentals deposit in cash also, which would be outside their policy) he stays somewhere where cash payments are common - and that’s a hostel.
