If you look at his X account, this guy was not a leftist anticapitalist. He's retweeting some of the favorite talking points of the right: feminists are feminizing men. He also encouraged his followers to read a thread about the fall of the Roman Empire that traced its decline to it becoming a welfare state. His X account comes across as very arrogant and verging on Men's Rights talking points. Far from a left wing anticapitalist.

I am certain this guy went off the deep end recently. Could be triggered by drugs, a traumatic event, or more likely, a simmering mental health issue. But I'm not a doc so I can't diagnose. I expect we'll hear that he had been becoming more unhinged for a period of months or years.
This. I also saw a post where he complemented a Tucker Carlson video. Seems like he just dropped off the face of the earth in June (his last posts on X). I also saw a picture of his fake ID and the date of the license was June 2024.

Altoona police say they will release more information this evening

A map showing the location of Altoona, Pennsylvania relative to New York City

In a statement, the Altoona Police Department says its officers were dispatched to a McDonald's at 09:14 local time after receiving reports of a male that matched the description of the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

They then made contact with the man and arrested him on "unrelated charges", police say.

"At this time, the Altoona Police Department is cooperating with local, state, and federal agencies," they say, adding that they will release more information later this evening.

Altoona is about 277 miles (445km) west of New York City, where the shooting took place.

I'll bet the Altoona police got the surprise of their lives, today. Can't imagine when they woke up this morning they thought they'd be hauling in the prime suspect in the biggest manhunt for ages, especially with the crime taking place in Manhattan.

I've read basketball, wrestling and soccer, although it could be all of them.

According to this "
Mangione had a particularly personal reason to hate the medical community — its treatment of an ailing relative, sources said.

Online obituaries show he lost a grandmother in 2013 and grandfather in 2017.

His LinkedIn page indicates that he once worked in an assisted-living facility for the elderly for a few months in 2014, while still in high school.

Murder is not justifiable as a means or end, a family will never be the same again.

But I think this was well thought out, I think LM had deep and thought out resentment and he wanted this to have the impact on the (inter)national community that it did. I don’t think tantrum reflects what he and many other activists have ended up doing - and I don’t condone those many evil acts in many nations over the centuries.
That's about where I am. I try to be compassionate to both sides and understand, while not condoning. I'm not really one for dismissing and preaching about how someone was "just a narcissist" or acting out. "He threw it all away and now he'll pay!" No. Young men are always going to seem callow in some sense. Nor do I automatically assume that he just lost his way, burned out, had a stalled career and felt stymied, took too many psychedelics, was wracked with chronic pain and became twisted, like has happened to some.

Maybe he truly wanted to be a revolutionary.

Maybe he saw enough darkness and didn't see a conventional way forward anymore, whether it was looming Singularity in his own career - I mean, he was certainly some sort of AI Insider and we're on the verge of things changing beyond recognition very soon. This whole crime may be inconceivable 5 years from now due to AI advances.

Sometimes being a revolutionary involves targeted violence. It's a huge risk to take with the one life you have. How is God going to judge you, let alone family and society? I wouldn't take that risk. As someone said way back in an earlier thread, this feels "foreign." That's because it's not accepted/acceptable in American democracy to be a revolutionary. But maybe it was too dark for him.

I don't expect anyone on a crime-solving forum that enshrines law enforcement values, ethical reporting and the rule of law to say he did anything right. And I'm glad it's like that, too. It's amazing we can even have this discussion.

One out-there, totally implausible, but intriguing reason he might have been on a bus and still had the gun with him so long after the crime, was that he was trying to get to the real MR (the name on the fake ID, whose LinkedIn photo looks just like LM,) in New Jersey, to make a murder look like a suicide, plant the manifesto and leave the gun in MR’s hand, and leave the case looking “solved”.. (I know it’s a crazy thought just had to throw it out there once it popped in my head!)
And if LR had an alibi (despite his hypothetical murder) then what? It would go nowhere other than police looking for the person who murdered and framed him. The case would still need to be proved... i.e., that LR was in NY and matched other supporting evidence

As far as flirting goes.... remember, this info came from the desk clerk at the Hostel. So, it may be that she flirted or as a matter of business, flirts to gain enough trust to ask someone to remove their mask when checking in.
Yes, I think a friendly exchange that lasts a moment can be considered flirting. Not sure why people are so upset about the description. It can simply be light-hearted, charming banter.

..and maybe if he never had to drop his mask, maybe he wouldn't have been caught for an even longer time (or never).
I'm actually quite astounded that someone recognized him from the photos. Maybe I'm bad with faces, but if I saw LM "in the wild," I can't say I'd be so sure it was the shooter that I would call the police.

Kudos the the lady (?) who asked him to show his face at the hostel, though.
Let the world see what he looked like.
Fwiw, I do think LE have the right perp.
Omo.

Possibly not cooperating:

Here are the latest developments:
Mangione was not talking to authorities, Fox News has reported.
He did not have a lawyer as of Monday afternoon, according to the outlet, which cited an unnamed law enforcement source.

It's hard for me to believe that friends/family/coworkers didn't.

Details from 'lone wolf' suspect's manifesto: 'I acted alone'
In the manifesto, Luigi Mangione said he acted alone and that he was self-funded.

According to CNN, the alleged CEO shooter's words suggested violence was the answer.

Lines from Mangione's warped manifesto revealed

Some details from Luigi Mangione's manifesto, which was found on him when he was arrested, have been published by CNN.

The document, which spanned two pages, read: 'These parasites had it coming.
'I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.'

Finding a manifesto saying he acted alone means he didnt....

Look at the shooters backpack straps in the shooting video and then compare with the video of the backpack found by police....In the shooting video the straps are tan to white....in the found backpack video the straps are black...
if this is the guy....he wasnt acting alone.

I think based on available photos of LM, the eyebrows are a dead giveaway.
Add to that the chin and general shape of his face ?
Imo.

No one was hurt too. That's a miraculous thing. He had the weapon and could have continued.
