You would think he would have a place of his own somewhere with enough food to last months. He should have also had two sets of fake ID. The one to use in NY until the shooting and then another afterwards when you're on the run. Not getting rid of the NJ fake ID and gun seems like a big mistake.

'Our hearts go out to everyone affected' - Mangione's former school

An email sent tp past students by the headmaster of the Gilman School, the private all-boys school in Baltimore, Maryland, previously attended by Luigi Mangione calls the fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the subsequent arrest "deeply distressing".

"We recently became aware that the person arrested in connection with the killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO is a Gilman alumnus," Henry Smyth, the head of the school, wrote.

"We do not have any information other than what is being reported in the news," he said.

"This is deeply distressing news on top of an already awful situation. Our hearts go out to everyone affected," he added.

"Here on campus, our focus will remain on caring for and educating the boys."

My son was having shooting pains from his butt to his calf that would take him out/down like he was paralyzed. He couldn’t run without this happening. It was def a warranted surgery and he’s so much better already!
And this is what pressure on a nerve root does. Even in the UK he would have had a surgical repair (for free)

Not necessarily, I gave a list of some of the books I have read in the old thread, I also own every single episode of Air Crash Investigation (Mayday) that has ever been released, over 20 series, bought a multi region player to watch them, I take no satisfaction in a single airplane crash death just have a fascination/curiosity as to what caused them
Ha! I'm also a WWII buff!

I've read a few of the books on the suspect's list and the most surprising thing to me was his fascination with the Unibomber's material. I think when all is said and done, we might see that this was the straw that broke the camel's back sending our suspect over the edge so to speak. The only difference is that Ted K. got even by building homemade bombs which he sent to heads of corporations he felt were responsible for the downfall of industrialized society, whereas our suspect built himself a weapon from a 3d printer and focused his anger on the health care industry.

Chronic pain is unbearable. I think very few people understand this. I have no idea if it pertains to this guy at all; however, what you say is so true.

Chronic pain is incredibly depressing and changes one's personality.
I will have some sympathy if he does have pain issues with his back. After back surgery my life has never been the same and sometimes I think I may actually go insane from the constant pain. It's not that I would excuse what he did, just would sympathize with how pain can change the direction of one's life. In my experience, my insurance will not cover any treatments such as injections, physical therapy, etc anymore.

On his LinkedIn profile, Luigi Mangione listed TrueCar Inc., a publicly traded new and used car-buying marketplace, as his employer since 2021. Mangione listed his current role as a data engineer. However, a TrueCar spokesperson said that he had not worked at the company for some time,

“While we generally don’t comment on personnel matters, we can confirm that Luigi Mangione has not been an employee of our company since 2023,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Would any of us have matched his face with the police photos if we saw him? I don’t think I would.
If I saw him for a while, I might suspect the eyebrows and eyes. I might tell someone about my suspicions. If I knew that he was on the Greyhound bus, it would really raise eyebrows (pun intended).

Posters saying that someone or his parents most likely recognized him. I can tell you that my husband would not have known about this case had I not pointed it out. Many people just do not follow the news or may watch some cable news where it's not being reported. I can tell you that I never watch CNN but flipped to the channel when others said that was who was reporting this information.

Sadly, it seems to me that this was a privileged kid going to private school and University of Pennsylvania to earn both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

<modsnip - sleuthing family>

"The suspected killer of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson is the heir to a holiday resort fortune created by his grandparents - and the brother of a top doctor.
Luigi Mangione, 26, comes from a powerful Maryland family centered around the late patriarch Nicholas Mangiano, a first-generation American who built a real estate empire in the state that included country clubs and media."

Lots of info in this link:

Not at all surprising, like celebrities spouting off about the environment and taking private jets everywhere.

Last week I got a three page letter from my insurance company telling me they're going green (paperless) for the environment...

One out-there, totally implausible, but intriguing reason he might have been on a bus and still had the gun with him so long after the crime, was that he was trying to get to the real MR (the name on the fake ID, whose LinkedIn photo looks just like LM,) in New Jersey, to make a murder look like a suicide, plant the manifesto and leave the gun in MR’s hand, and leave the case looking “solved”.. (I know it’s a crazy thought just had to throw it out there once it popped in my head!)

I...actually think this sounds plausible.

If you look at his X account, this guy was not a leftist anticapitalist. He's retweeting some of the favorite talking points of the right: feminists are feminizing men. He also encouraged his followers to read a thread about the fall of the Roman Empire that traced its decline to it becoming a welfare state. His X account comes across as very arrogant and verging on Men's Rights talking points. Far from a left wing anticapitalist.

I am certain this guy went off the deep end recently. Could be triggered by drugs, a traumatic event, or more likely, a simmering mental health issue. But I'm not a doc so I can't diagnose. I expect we'll hear that he had been becoming more unhinged for a period of months or years.
Yes, I completely agree. The politics are kind of weird to explain. Part of my twitter (X) accounts that I follow, some of my algo, aligns with a collection of accounts on twitter called “tpot.” It is entirely boring and I don’t encourage anyone reading to go down the rabbit hole to protect their sanity, but if you are curious and search this on twitter right now you’ll see the chatter about LM. He essentially was somewhat engaged with this collective. It’s not an organized group in anyway, just accounts that talk about certain topics I suppose. Common topics are IQ levels, politics, technology, and psychedelics (yes I said it’s boring! Save yourself) It tends to be more on the right side politically in the vein of Peter Thiel or Sam Altman. I’m sure he picked it up in school. Theres definitely an element of otherness, like this collective consciousness is more elite, etc.

Finding a manifesto saying he acted alone means he didnt....

Look at the shooters backpack straps in the shooting video and then compare with the video of the backpack found by police....In the shooting video the straps are tan to white....in the found backpack video the straps are black...
if this is the guy....he wasnt acting alone.

In the found backpack photos we are seeing the "underside" of the straps, not the side that someone walking behind him or CCTV would see.

Like many backpacks, for that model the side of the backpack straps that touches the body is black, while the visible side matches the color of the backpack itself.

If you scroll down on this review of that 2016-2019 model and go to the rotating image of the backpack, you can see this.

It is the same with their current models of the backpack.

Same. My bf's comment on him was "he dresses like everyone here and his face is pretty standard."
seems as in the idaho BK case, eyebrows gotta be trimmed if you wanna stay ahead of those chasing you.

Ironic the self-proclaimed tech genius pioneering the advancement of 21st century thought will spend the rest of his life caged, reading allota books and writing letters, like back in the day.

Really? Wow, the Ted K. connection made total sense to me and was the least surprise I've had today. :)

The flavor of the overall crime, IMO, had a mixture of extensive planning with many small slip-ups. We like to think that those who plan a murder will do with extreme precision and attention to detail, but I've heard FBI profilers say that rarely does the plan go exactly as intended.

And if its the first time someone has committed murder, their emotions after the murder can be completely unpredictable, in ways they never anticipated. He might have thought he would feel elation afterwards, but being on the run for days, while the entire media and internet is talking about him, constantly looking over his shoulder, probably didn't feel awesome.

I am so conflicted as I read more about this young man. He obviously grew up privileged, ivy league educated, a strong family with means. How did this happen? This wasn't a snap decision. Really confused. JMO
I see the irony as well.

@RookieWebsleuth2024 said it best with his noting that leftist and quasi leftist extremists have a long tradition pulling militants from upper middle class and even junior level wealthy backgrounds.

In addition to Rookie's observations, a very noticeable number US 1970s leftist terrorists from such groups such as the SLA, and the Weathermen were coming straight outta'h the fruit and vegetable fields of California's Central Valley.

Err..... no they did not- except in their fevered, Che fueled dreams.

They really came from flagship California Universities and flagship Chicago area universities where their upper income parents funded their pricey tuitions. Nothing remotely "oppressed" about them.

From what I have learned about this suspect so far, I really think this was a big part of his motive. He studied human behavior and AI to a extensive level. I think that he hated the way UHC has been leveraging AI for claims approvals and took out the CEO to send a message (I've heard the algorithm was denying a crazy percentage of claims, crawling policies for any possible loophole)

This is an incredibly brilliant individual also born into a really wealthy family, its just absolutely mind boggling everything we know so far.
Bbm.
Agreed.

And, Welcome to Websleuths !

No, killer got hungry and went to McDs where he was recognized.
While searching his name i saw this and thought “well, it’s all in the name”, he couldn’t help all the not well thought over foodstops (McDo’s, Starbucks)

Mangione Surname Meaning

Italian: nickname for a glutton mangionebig eater’ a derivative of mangiareto eat’.
