IANAL, but the statute which gives the federal government jurisdiction over murders committed when the killer crosses state boundaries specifies there must be an aspect of financial consideration, which there does not appear to be in the case.

18 U.S. Code § 1958
(a)
Whoever travels in or causes another (including the intended victim) to travel in interstate or foreign commerce, or uses or causes another (including the intended victim) to use the mail or any facility of interstate or foreign commerce, with intent that a murder be committed in violation of the laws of any State or the United States as consideration for the receipt of, or as consideration for a promise or agreement to pay, anything of pecuniary value, or who conspires to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than ten years, or both; and if personal injury results, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than twenty years, or both; and if death results, shall be punished by death or life imprisonment, or shall be fined not more than $250,000, or both.
Thank you for pulling that info up. jmo

snipped

Despite romantic narratives about this guy, there is no way a judge will give him a light sentence after killing a man on a city sidewalk in cold blood.

There is nothing about our judicial system that will compare Luigi's, Brian's, and countless patients lives against each other to decide what is a fair judgement. That's not how it works. Luigi's actions will be weighed against the laws he broke, the most serious laws on the books, and he will judged on that, as are all defendants.

Yeah, uhm, he's toast. There is no claiming "heat of the moment." No matter his feelings, he knows murder is illegal, and he took a great many careful actions to commit the crime then escape. It's about as murder one as murder one gets.

Edited to add: If he is the same person. Allegedly, he did this. I don't mean to stomp on due process, but the arrest looks like the right one to me, so far.

MOO

Looks like he is wearing two of the jackets from the circulated surveillance photos.
No beard, so that dark area under his mask that folks were trying to figure out what it was was likely that black gaiter thingie.

The YouTube account with his photo and name was created in January of 2024. Would it be possible for someone to have changed the name of their YouTube account to his, once news of this broke? There was a scheduled video that was apparently going to be made public around this time, but the account has since been removed.

I’m sorry but don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time. I don’t see any reason why he deserves special treatment if convicted.
I was not mentioning anything about special treatment. I do hope all convicted people (male or female, murderer or not murderer) have protection against perverts while in prison. Nobody should have to face this in their lives. Jmoo.

I’d wager LM’s family is richer than BT would ever be.

As an Ivy League and private school grad, he likely has friends in corporate and investor circles. Does he have a friend who attended the UnitedHealthcare investor conference and gave him detailed information, including the attendee list?

Just in: Criminal complaint on gun charges for Luigi Mangione

An officer asked him to pull down his mask and asked if he had been to New York recently, at which point Mangione “became quiet and started to shake,”

Deeply annoyed that while everyone was discussing whether he was Iranian/Russian/etc yesterday after the taxi pics were released I posted that he reminded me of Christopher Moltisanti and it was deleted for being “off topic” :( JK mods, I know you guys have a huge task keeping us all on topic here… but dang! His name could not POSSIBLY be more Italian lol
I remember that cuz i liked that even if I also really thought...naw except for the eyebrows. lol.

Cryptic YouTube video from account 'linked' to Luigi Mangione issues chilling warning

An unconfirmed YouTube account using the alleged shooters name and photo posted an eerie message hours after his arrest.

'If you see this, I'm already under arrest,' the silent 84 second clip is captioned.

The video displayed a 60 second countdown then jumped to screen that said,'Soon... Dec 11th.'

'All is scheduled, be patient. Bye for now,' stated the final message displayed on the screen.

Yea, when they initially said we are not releasing the name at this time - I said, they don't have a clue.
And that wasn’t technically a lie

My heart goes out to you, honestground. I have some experience with it, but have long bouts of being relatively pain-free. However, I know what I've experienced is a tiny slice of what some people go through, and I can't imagine it. I just can't. I saw my mother go through it, who became a shell of herself and, sadly, quite embittered.

Thanks so much again for your kindness. I am sorry about your mother :( A shell of yourself is a good description; just sorry you had to experience that but thank you for understanding. I am glad you have long bouts of being relatively pain-free, that's wonderful!
