Extradition could take 30 to 45 days - police

Once charging documents are filed in New York, Pennsylvania will file a "fugitive justice complaint" and he will be brought before a state judge, police say.

That judge will then present Luigi Mangione with the option of waving his extradition or to contest it.

If he waives it, he will immediately be made available to New York authorities.

If he contests it, the process could take between 30 and 45 days. It is a common procedure.

Charges will be filed against Mangione 'very soon' - Governor Shapiro

Governor Shapiro says "presumably New York will file charges very soon" against Luigi Mangione, adding that "justice will be delivered in this case."

He adds that this case has "hinged on attention", which he says was helpful in allowing to catch the gunman.

A reminder that Mangione has so far only been charged on counts including forgery and carrying a firearm without a license.

Mangione in Pennsylvania for several days

Police are now speaking about the items found in Mangione's backpack, including written documents and electronic devices that are in the process of being searched to get a sense of his activities and to retrace his steps.

They add that he has been in Pennsylvania "for several days" and have identified businesses he visited.

Police add they have a "good idea" of his journey since leaving New York City, noting a "variety of locations across the state" - but add that more will be determined as the investigation progresses.

As an Ivy League and private school grad, he likely has friends in corporate and investor circles. Does he have a friend who attended the UnitedHealthcare investor conference and gave him detailed information, including the attendee list?
I dont think so....

Several industry insiders have stated that Investor Conventions are for very senior members of the corporate food chain only. Granted, the accompanying support staff might not be quite so senior.

Even still, I bet they only take the most experienced support staff- whether its for setting up the tables, or for doing the analytical work that high speed biz school graduates maybe slated for- once they get enough experience.

Though the murderer could well have friends who are on a fast rising track, they would still be relatively junior at 26 years or so old. Thinking that with exceptions of the ultra talented aside, supporting staff at mega investor confrerences could be 30(+)

We don't know that he has suffered due to health care costs though. Has it been said that claims of his were denied or that he didn't get the care he needed? If it has been posted, then I haven't seen it.
This has not been confirmed. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being that UHC was seen as a symbol of corporate greed to him and it wasn’t as specific to denial of healthcare claims.

CNN Live:

Mary Ellen O'Toole, former FBI profiler:

Perhaps he wasn't finished. Very smart man. He knew he could never return home, this was it for him. Likely more on agenda. Could have also included suicide. They got him in midstream. She thinks he planned to continue on with shootings (agreeing with John Miller and other guest).

Interesting interview coming up with someone he lived with in Honolulu.
I haven't seen any hint in his travel or MO thst he was "planning to continue on with shootings" with the false implication there had already been plural shootings. These talking heads are pathetic.

BALTIMORE -- Luigi Mangione, a person of interest in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, is related to a prominent family in Maryland, sources told WJZ.

[the shooter's family] own several country clubs, including Haysfield Country Club in Hunt Valley, as well as healthcare facilities

I worry about the mentally unwell folks who similarly subscribe to this man's underdeveloped, violence-prone views. I am most concerned of their offering up a protest "not-guilty" verdict for him when that time comes. All it takes is one dissenter on a jury.

Of course, there's also the possibility of copycat crimes, which if he continues to be deified will almost certainly occur. Indeed, other young men with more privilege than impulse control are probably out there right now railing against the "monopolization and inflated costs" of health insurers all the while drinking their $13 Starbucks lattes, posting the latest Facebook meme on their $1300 Apple IPhone, and drooling over the new Air Jordans.

JMO.

The manifesto found on Luigi Mangione mentions UnitedHealthcare by name, noting the size of the company and how much money it makes, according to a senior law enforcement official who saw the document. The manifesto also broadly condemns health-care companies for placing profits over care, the official said.

I can’t believe that in the 10 days he was in NYC, he didn’t organize a disguise for himself, not even a glue on beard.

or that he didn't already have that planned!

Im not sure if Luigi thought about what after being caught and being in max security prison forever
The best work an attorney can do for him is get him into a federal min-sec prison, like Butner or Eglin AFB.

New York officials will soon charge the suspect with homicide

Luigi Mangione is expected to be charged with homicide imminently in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Pennsylvania officials tell reporters at the news conference.

Pete Weeks, a district attorney for Pennsylvania's Blair County, says he expects charges against the suspect to be filed by New York officials either "tonight or tomorrow".

Police won't comment on suspect's motive

BBC correspondent Jessica Parker asks police if they have determined a motive behind the suspect's alleged crimes.

Police say they will not comment, reiterating that there is "a lot of information to go through" from the evidence they have seized so far, and that they are focused more closely on his activities in Pennsylvania.

They do add, however, that "there is some information that gives insight into his thinking."

Police say they will update the media in the coming days on the matter.

Which leads me to ponder whether he wanted to be caught. Acquire the soapbox as opposed to spending years hiding.

I dunno. Makes sense to me.

IMO.

Same. Methodically planned the hit and the escape and didn’t think of using a post-op disguise. A simple mustache, beard or hair dye and he’s never noticed.

From the article:
“Further details on that relative or their identity have not been shared, although online obituaries show Mangione lost a grandmother in 2013 and a grandfather in 2017.”
the grandmother died in 2023.
