Maybe the plan was to go to another country and only speak Italian and pretend to know a little English? Like maybe somewhere south of the border? IDK, but I'm sure they're checking his finances because to live alone in another unfamiliar country he would need more than $10,000. Maybe has an off shore account? He was taking his time if the plan was to leave the US. Something slowed him down, or he was never leaving. Wonder if he was surprised that LE didn't have his name. Maybe he thought they were closing in, when in reality they were not. Clue will be the $2000 in other currency.

If he was departing the US with more than $10k USD, he would be required to report it.

So if he tried to use $8k USD and about $2k in another currency, he could technically say he had less than $10k USD.

Of course, not all passengers are stopped and asked this question, but it seems like another maneuver to avoid interrogation.

The suspected gunman appeared to make a reference to UnitedHealthcare writing that “United” is one of the largest companies by market capitalization in the United States, according to a law enforcement source who has read the document.

There is no mention of Thompson specifically.
Bbm.

I'm still wondering if there was any help for LM ?
Even if LM knew BT was going to be at that meeting/conference, how'd he know for sure it was BT walking to the lobby ?

Can't get off that fence.

Reporting from Hollidaysburg, Pa.
At his arraignment in the Blair County Courthouse, Mangione was not represented by an attorney. Asked by the judge if he would like a public defender or would retain private counsel for future court proceedings, Mangione asked if he could answer that question at a future date. He also declared that he had no drug or mental health history that the court should be aware of.

Back pain was a chronic and continuing burden for Mangione, according to a spokesman for R.J. Martin, who owns a co-living space in Honolulu called Surfbreak where Mangione lived for about six months. The injury stopped Mangione from surfing and even hampered his romantic life, the spokesman said.

From Court: Luigi Mangione had a black 3D printed pistol, metal slide and plastic handle. Also six 9mm Full Metal Jacket rounds, at least one hollow point bullet, and a silencer that was also 3D printed.

The Commonwealth alleged when asking that bail be denied that he also was in possession of $8K in USD and $2K in foreign currency. Also bags that are utilized to block the transmission of cellular data.

In a strange moment, Luigi interjected and rejected those accusations. He said someone must have planted the money, because he was not in possession of that much. He also says the bags are waterproof and meant to keep his electronics dry.

Mangione says he has not had contact with his family recently, has no drug or alcohol issues and has no criminal history. He first gave the judge his childhood home address, but then when pressed, revealed his most recent address in Hawaii.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 12/23/24. Mangione asked if he could decide later if he would retain private counsel or would rely on a public defender.

He was tall, about 6"1. He walked with his head up and made eye contact with the judge and the Commonwealth when they were speaking. He was barefoot and cuffed around waist and ankles. He spoke eloquently, with confidence. He appeared coherent and understood what was going on.

He did not have an attorney present. He was allowed to speak when answering questions for the judge to decide if bail should be granted. He said he would decide later if he was going to retain private counsel or a public defender ahead of his prelim on 12/23/24.

Yes. To add to my earlier comment about having read some the same books and topics he read: I never read the Unabomber's manifesto that I can recall, but I remember when it was released and discussed, and I remember thinking that, except for the violence, I mostly agreed with it. I've labelled myself a neo-Luddite for decades, and could expound for a good long while on what harm I think technology has done (even while I spend much of my days online).

Feels a mite creepy at this moment, but again, I don't think that the general environmental perspective he appears to espouse is all that uncommon. It's the conclusion that violence is warranted that makes this guy's take stand out. (plus the tech-bro incel stuff which I of course don't share)

And it's a shame, because as other posters have said, this guy's privilege could have been used to give him a leg up toward a life of helping solve problems. Maybe his murderous action will start a culture war and maybe it won't, but either way he is most likely spending the rest of his life locked up, unable to participate.
If his family owned nursing homes, they would be very familiar with insurance billing, and be able to take cae of billing issues.

I really wonder if he has a drug dependency because of his chronic pain and may have been kicked out of a pain management program.

Smiling photo was upon checking in to the hostel so I'd say that 10 days sleeping in a hostel and then brutally murdering someone and then running from the police for 5 more days might just change your looks.. he looks rough now. Actions have consequences and it seems he's finding that out.
I just saw a thread on SM implying it's not the same guy because he has a slight unibrow but in the hotel pics he didn't appear to.

I don't know if it's people being spoiled by everything 4K and HD, or just a lack of experience with cameras, but angle, camera quality and lighting can drastically change a person's looks.

I used to manage a retail store and frequently provided LE footage of thieves. It's surprising how much a person's appearance can change based on certain things.

Hopefully a forensic search of his computer will be able to shed some light on that.

26-year-old Luigi Mangione in his holding cell. Let's see how long it takes for authorities to extradite him back to NY to face murder charges.

He did have his passport. His passport was not really needed for a murder in the US, and bus/train travel.
I think he might have waited till things died down in the press.
He should have taken off to San Diego, crossed the border (no ID required) and taken a flight from Mexico.
He should have changed his appearance (lighten and trim those brows in particular, and grow a beard) and taken the first flight out of NJ. He could have been anywhere before the authorities even had his picture out there.

Did they? I don’t know. I was just going off of what another person said… what they said did not include murder.

Yea, I just googled it and read the news report. No murder charges.
Have you not seen the murder captured on video?? Seriously????

If there was a back injury, curious if it was sports or a car accident or something else.

Mangione, 26, suffered chronic back pain from an apparent pinched nerve, said R.J. Martin, Surfbreak’s founder. His friends stopped hearing from him this summer.
Mangione was committed to personal development through reading and working out. He got around Oahu by bicycle, and even after he moved out of Surfbreak he would walk with Wexler from Magic Island to Surfbreak, located in the penthouse of a building near the Hawaii Convention Center.

Martin recalled the problem, which had lingered for years, was a misaligned vertebrae that would pinch Mangione’s spinal cord.

"He went radio silent in June or July,” Martin said.

These are just a few excerpts. Much more at link.
Pic from the article you posted. Looks like I might have been on to something with the reason Luigi wore masks. If he's wearing one all alone on a rockclimbing wall... he's doing it because of Covid. JMO So, it might have been more than trying to hide his face. It would also be why he had a box of masks in his backpack (someone posted that info and source above)
