He doesn't have the sense to clam up.
He didn't have an attorney to advise him.

@alcaprari23
He did not have an attorney present. He was allowed to speak when answering questions for the judge to decide if bail should be granted. He said he would decide later if he was going to retain private counsel or a public defender ahead of his prelim on 12/23/24.

Piecing together who Luigi Mangione is -- talking to people at Penn, high school friends, and friends from Hawaii. Everyone shocked. Said he liked "intellectual conversation about American systems not working" -- but never showed signs of violence.
More at 10pm on @NewsNation.

Eta: meant to include post quote from someone who said even if LM's surgery and/or treatment was *not* covered by insurance, his family wealth would have covered it. That's not the way it works in this country for many procedures, especially hospital surgeries requiring anaesthesia, particularly on spines.

A manifesto found online, with the subtitle, "Luigi Mangione's last words", mentions UnitedHealthcare 7 times, details his mother's physical ailments as well as his own. To be clear, this is not confirmed to be the manifesto found on him today at McDonald's. Here are excerpts:

"I authorize my own act of self-defense in response to a hostile entity making war on me and my family."

"These might be my last words. I don’t know when they will come for me. I will resist them at any cost. That’s why I smile through the pain."

"Each appointment was promised to be fully covered, until the insurance claims were delayed and denied. Allopathic medicine did nothing to help my mother’s suffering. Yet it is the foundation of our entire society."

"They promised coverage, and broke their word to my mother. With every delay, my anger surged. With every denial, I wanted to throw the doctor through the glass wall of their hospital waiting room. But it wasn’t them. It wasn’t the doctors, the receptionists, administrators, pharmacists, imaging technicians, or anyone we ever met. It was UnitedHealthcare."

"That’s where UnitedHealthcare went wrong. They violated their contract with my mother, with me, and tens of millions of other Americans. This threat to my own health, my family’s health, and the health of our country’s people requires me to respond with an act of war."

Have you not seen the murder captured on video?? Seriously????
What are you talking about? The guy they caught was not charged with murder. He was charged with fraud and stuff. They don’t have enough for murder. Let’s see what they can come up with.

This is so sad. So many influences on a 26 year old brain. He was idealistic. Just decided on iron g solution.

Yes, but you didn't just kill someone with your picture plastered all over hell and back and trying not to be noticed.
Someone else posted it was cold and rainy during the McDonald’s stop.

and one of the officers was a newbie, 6 months on the job.
Like the rookie who captured Eric Robert Rudolph digging around a dumpster!

Is this legitimate?

yes I am aware
that's why I said it's really no secret
we have a healthcare crisis here in Canada too for other reasons

Sorry, I wasn't clear.
I agree with you.

How so? To me, it sounds like NY has enough to charge him with murder and there are imminent plans to do so. Today’s charges were only PA, which wouldn’t include an out of state murder.

I don't understand - why couldn't he just pay for it?

Was he charged with murder yet?

There was a point here where I live when the surgical masks were impossible to find. Depending on the date of the pic, that could've been all he could get.
He was seen wearing them after the shooting. They are easy to obtain.

If that is his X-ray, he did get the surgery.

It implies he had pre-authorization.
