@MassGuy Thx for link to X post by Brian Entin.

What does Mr G think he'll accomplish w this?
He’s a bit of a loose cannon. He’s hoping to pressure the judge to nix the deal.

It’ll never happen.

I feel like he's really out for revenge. which is totally understandable, like of course you would want revenge... but the justice system isn't everyone's personal revenge machine. imo

I think he thinks Kohberger will be convicted and get the death penalty. Though conviction would've been likely, Mr. G may not realize how long the death penalty can take.

I have no sympathy for killers: I do not minimize the viciousness of their crimes or the suffering of victims’ families. But no crime wholly removes the humanity of the person who committed it, and no human is beyond the possibility of redemption. People of faith and principle on both sides of the political divide have recognized this moral truth.

Justice requires retribution, but that is not the same as revenge.
I have deep respect for your opinion, although I do not share it.

If this were my family I would want him to die for making my child die horrifically.

A problem that arises in this specific case is that apparently two families want the DP and two don’t, so that is irresolvable.

A larger problem IMO is the decades it does take for a death penalty sentence to be carried out, and that is its own torment for the families, I imagine.

Personally I do hope the judge is able to set parameters to accept the plea by making it a condition that BK tells all, though I wouldn’t anticipate him telling the whole truth.

Brian Entin and Ashley Banfield are together on her podcast discussing the unexpected plea deal announcement yesterday. This is a less formal, honest discussion:

At the very end she reads the statement from Kaylee Goncalves family, written by her 18 year old sister, Aubrie.

I was shocked when I heard this. I never thought he would say he did it. I have upmost respect and understand the anger of the families, but the more I think about it, this was actually the best result and disagree with public outrage statements. First comes complete relief that those poor surviving roommates didn't have to withstand additional trauma of having to walk into that courtroom with him and then have that defense attorney grill them to try to pretend that they had something to do with the murders.

Social media has created an echo chamber for conspiracy theorists. Will any of the probergers ever come up with an apology to the families and to the surviving roommates for the pain that they have caused them? As we have seen in trials time again, and particularly the most recent trials, jurors lie to get on a jury. Even though any rational person could see how guilty he is, you just never know that some sympathizer can lie their way on to vote not guilty. The whole dog and pony show that defense Attorneys do with telling jurors that they can't believe the DNA because it was a corrupted process, blah blah, just for starters.

And even if you can get a conviction, you don't know that people again will lie their way on to say that they can give the death penalty, but then vote not to. Look at what happened in the Parkland shooting. How much more brutal can you get than that? And the woman refused to vote for the death penalty. Social media has exposed just how many conspiracy theorists there are out there in so many ways. There is no such thing as a slam dunk case anymore. And with Casey Anthony and OJ, there never was such a thing.

As much as I sympathize with the families, SG out there maligning the prosecution who worked endlessly, tirelessly all these years is just not a good look. I imagine they well knew what SG and his family would say, and maybe made only the most minimal of attempts to contact them. I truly hope, though, that they can work into the plea deal that he will give details to someone, someway. I also hope that the prosecution or through them can release all of the evidence that they had that we have not known all this time to give us a fuller picture as to exactly what happened in there. RIP to those beautiful kids and prayers that every day those surviving roommates find the strength to enjoy the rest of their lives.

I said the same thing last night, then my husband said "yeah well, it wasn't our daughter that had her face bashed in and her body beaten and sliced to pieces."

@MassGuy, Thx for your response.
Yes, of course, trying to pressure the judge into nixing the deal.

Not that it would be a logical response, but I can imagine stmts (like he's made, this and many others) could incite someone to physically threaten, injure or kill the judge.

Or a member of the prosecution team.
Or someone in LE.
Heck, maybe even someone on the defense team.

I also believe the surviving room mates deserve some degree of closure. They are in their early 20s and have to live with this the rest of their lives. To pursue the DP could very well last the majority of their lives. Putting them on the stand to be torn apart by the defense, what good does that do them?

Nothing will bring the 4 beautiful young adults back, but we owe it to the 2 surving ones to give them the best possible circumstances for their lives.

I have no idea what SG thinks this accomplishes, but I'd bet a million bucks that people who know Judge Hippler know better than to try to twist his arm.

If all four families want Judge Hippler not to accept the plea deal, they'll have a chance to express that to the judge directly face-to-face themselves on Wednesday.

This is coming from an understandably distraught parent of a murdered child. He wants to see his own version of justice meted out to BK, IMO. I would too if I were in his shoes.

Which is exactly why as a society we need courtrooms, lawyers and judges, i.e., the rule of law.

Wow, if it went down as described on The Goncalves Family Facebook page, I would be also be upset. Sometimes, it’s how something is presented to a family.

There’s a saying: I thought I was going to the beach, but now I’m at the mountains. The mountains may be OK, but I was packed & ready to go to the beach.

I understand and empathize with SG - he is in a dark place, feeling a natural emotion as you would. But I also understand why people in that dark place do not get to dictate what justice requires, and why the interests of the larger society are paramount.

I can only pray for healing, and hope the end of court proceedings will help with that somehow.

I know it’s not the outcome that was wanted . I hope he gets life .

I'm going to cut Steve Goncalves some slack, because, if I'm being honest, were I in his shoes, I would be livid with this agreement too. He knows that nothing he says is going to change anything. He just has to scream at someone. JMO

I do not expect we will hear every victim's family echo the G family's sentiments here.

I expect we'll get a more measured statement from at least one of the other victim's family expressing appreciation for the work of LE and the prosecution.

Which is not to minimize the thoughts/feelings of the G family; however, they aren't the only family who suffered a profound, devastating loss.

The prosecution team has not been sitting on their hands for the past two and a half years. They've logged thousands upon thousands of hours working on this case.

The fact that families don't ultimately agree with the prosecution's decision to agree to a plea deal doesn't mean the families have been mistreated.

There is no such thing as perfect justice this side of heaven.

JMO.

Well it sounds like the Ethan's family hasn't spoken to the latest development. However, all the other families are upset about the plea deal.

Yeah, it’ll never happen.

SG speaks out of emotion, and I can understand that…. but even now he seems to be realizing that it will never happen.

I think Ethan's parents have expressed the opposite, though. I do think people vary in how they react to these tragedies. I totally get SG's beliefs and feelings, although I can't be sure I'd feel exactly the same way. But that's because I read too much true crime and have come to believe that for many, life in prison is worse than the death penalty. I just got through reading and listening about the Seige of Alcatraz, that's influencing me.

E's family is the one that I was thinking of when I said I didn't think SG spoke for all the families.

The feelings of the victims families are completely understandable, but feelings shouldn't govern how the legal system works.

The law is not based on feelings. It is based on facts and evidence.

People are doing a lot of crazy things these days to those in authority. There are a lot of filthy, ignorant, disgusting two-bit grievance collectors out there.

That said, there's some reason to be concerned about rogue judges coming along later and watering down plea agreements made by these serial or spree killers at the behest of defense attorneys. The latest example is the judge changing Jake Wagner's plea agreement from LWOP w/ a guarantee to testify against his father to 20 yrs and probation and no requirement to testify against the other killers.

Yes, I have great empathy for SG, plus I, personally, don’t think I have the right to tell someone how they should feel. There’s been great emotional expense for the families as well as traveling & attending the hearings. In particular, SG has other children & grandchildren that he has expressed he needs to attend to. It’s very hard to walk in someone else’s shoes. Just my thoughts.
