I know during a hurricane, the seas get choppy well before the storm comes in...not sure if that's the case here...

snipped for focus

jeez..didn't we just hear about how they had already brought in 4 months worth of food?

Its too difficult to get the supplies in and nowhere to put it. what about the waste produced too???

I really fear the outcome of this mess.

According to the Guardian and other sources, there will be NO attempt to remove the boys tonight. Rain expected sometime tomorrow.

ETA: they are already at Saturday morning, so the rain is about 8 hrs away

Their last live update was written 7 hours ago. It is only 7:50 am there right now. They had that press conference around midnight, which is where I think the info is coming from. When they said "Tonight," I believe they were talking about last night. IMO they don't know what they have planned for tonight Thailand time. They are constantly changing their minds.

Some sources seem to be saying, yes, today. Some seem to be saying, no, not today.

Hope that clears it up for you :)

Clear as the murky water in the cave! ;)

But isn’t more water going to come in once it rains? I’m just plain confused. Jmo. I feel like a dumb dumb or something. I just don’t get it.

What confuses me is, why do water levels rise when the pumps are turned and it wasnt raining? o_O
Parts of the cave are below the normal water table.

Yes, its about 4-5 hrs old but the rain is coming at approx. 3-4pm their time, Saturday.

If the monsoon hits mid afternoon, how are they going to get them out??
I truly fear they have missed their opportunity IF the rains come.

Thai navy Seals pay tribute to diver who died in cave rescue

*****
NYT article:
Thai Cave Rescue Will Be a Murky and Desperate Ordeal, Divers Say

"Interviews with the most experienced of the 140 or so cave divers from Thailand and around the world who are here to help have centered on a stark fact: This was already one of the most difficult cave-diving challenges in the world, and now they must somehow keep the weakened boys reasonably healthy in oxygen-depleted air while trying to teach them to attempt an underwater escape. One cave diver called it the underground equivalent of climbing Mount Everest — but with no guides to make things easier.

Me neither. I think nobody does at this point.

Narongsak Osatanakorn, the governor of Chiang Rai province, said that rescuers were striving to free the boys and their 25-year-old coach, Ekapol Chanthawong, before it rained but would only do so if there was “minimum risk” to their lives.

“If we face the heavy rain, we must bring the kids out,” he told a midnight press briefing on Friday. “But if the situation is stable [inside their chamber], we can let them stay.”

Thailand cave rescue postponed for 12 trapped schoolboys

Thanks for this ^^^ article, Margarita.

I don't understand the bolded part at all. It makes no sense to me. They aren't going to bring the boys out, while there is no rain, and the water is lower than usual.

But IF they face heavy rains, they will. How can they bring them out if the rains are ongoing and the waters is rising?

And how can they wait long enough to know if the situation is stable? once they realize it is not stable, wouldn't it be too late to bring them out safely?

I really do not understand the statement above. :sigh:

It isn't you. The reporting is awful. I can't imagine a scenario where more rain does not mean more water.

Thai cave rescue: Expert divers from UK to guide trapped soccer team out of cave

Thai cave rescue: Expert divers from UK to guide trapped soccer team out of cave - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Four expert cave divers from the UK will guide 12 boys and their soccer coach out of the flooded Thai cave they are trapped in, with support from Thai Navy Seals, authorities said.

The rescue attempt cannot be made today with attempts to free the boys put on hold, despite monsoonal rains resuming.

I truly fear they have missed their opportunity IF the rains come.

The weather forecast I quoted earlier said Spotty rains possible, its not sure it will rain and if it does it might not be over the cave. Where do you get your times from? In my experience rain is rarely on time.

It is believed 1.5km of the cave is still full of water. The rescue mission will go on despite the death.

The distance between a rescue base camp in side “chamber three” of the cave complex and where the team is stranded is 1.7km. In order to reach the boys from the base, a diver has to carry at least three oxygen tanks to reach them before replacing the tanks again on the way out.

Two of the boys and the coach are suffering from exhaustion through malnutrition, which could make it almost impossible for them to attempt the perilous journey, a Navy source told CNN.

Skilled cave divers are painstakingly teaching them to swim in preparation for a perilous escape, which involves pairing them with trained frogmen and leading them to safety through pitch-black water and narrow passageways.

What confuses me is, why do water levels rise when the pumps are turned and it wasnt raining? o_O

It seems to be limestone, you can think about it sort of like a sponge under the topsoil. Even after the rain stops the water that is in the soil and the stone continues to seep through into the caverns and eventually through small seep holes in the bottom of the caverns.

So like if the rains seem minor, that water can show up hours later since it has to go somewhere and down is what gravity dictates.

It probably means that the risk is still higher to make them dive in their weakened state than take a chance with the weather. Imo
