Ebola outbreak - general thread #4

Although we have recieved training in appropriate PPE, they keep changing their minds. Right now double gloves, double gown, face shield, hair cover, booties, N95 respirator, hospital supplied scrubs.

Easily done. Hold a weapon to the wife or grandson and threaten their life if no cooperation. If police believe someone was in medical distress, the offender could have backed up his threats with actual violence to ply them.

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #4

I disagree with this because in the ICUs that I have worked in shift change occurs at the bedside so the patient can be observed. Whenever there is a decompensation during shift change the outgoing nurse or both nurses will attend to the patient as the patient always takes priority. The patient...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #1

A brain dead patient does not participate in any part of the breathing process as the breathing center of the brain is dead. This is one of the cardinal signs necessary for the declaration of brain death. Therefore the ventilator is doing all of the work of breathing, essentially serving to keep...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #1

I am an ICU nurse, and have worked extensively with patients who have suffered brain death. I feel terrible for the family, however this nonsense with the press and legal system will not bring her daughter back. It will only serve to prolong their pain and increase the stress of the staff who...

GUILTY UT - Michele MacNeill, 50, found dead in bathtub, Pleasant Grove, 11 April 2007 - #6

Bingo. In an emergency I have been known to lift an almost 400 lb patient single handedly to get the cardiac board underneath them. Adrenaline just takes over, and this wasn't even a family member. MacNeil's unsafe to lift argument is laughable at best and at worst points out how callous he...

GUILTY UT - Michele MacNeill, 50, found dead in bathtub, Pleasant Grove, 11 April 2007 - #3

Very common for a patient to vomit during a resuscitation. Either from too much air/oxygen being forced into the stomach vs lungs during cpr or a host of other reasons.

Pa. girl's parents challenge lung donor rule

This story annoys me to no end. I'm an ICU nurse as well, except I work with the adult population and have worked with both donors and recipients including lung transplants. There are very valid reasons there are strict rules regarding transplants, and the results of her first transplant...

George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin General discussion #2

Having worked in trauma critical care for years, GZ's injuries appear to me to be superficial and inconsistent with the alleged bashing of his head on concrete. Believable if a three year old girl were the alleged attacker, maybe. Superficial scalp injuries tend to bleed profusely. I'm not...

    George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin General discussion

Well I came here to discuss what is actually going on in the courtroom today, but unfortunately the prevailing discussion has nothing to do with live courtroom proceedings. I'm disappointed.

Brett being "good looking" and a former cop should get him lots of attention in general pop. Welcome to hell.

They need 60 days, 24 hours a day to look for mitigating factors simply because there are none to find. Good luck with that, Brett.

Yes! I hope it's a guilty verdict, I want to see the smug look wiped off his face.
