About the DP, I have been cautious not to give my opinion so this is not that. I do interpret what BK was doing with this crime was strangely related to his mother's comments on it (or his own or others), somehow challenging it directly. Maybe after knowing he would not complete his education.

Does he just feel invalid and seeks validation either from his mother, society, the courts, etc.? How ironic his entire defense team is female. This is just a stray thought, but I keep looking for motive. JMOO

I believe the roster of DP qualified public defenders in Idaho is very small; it's been a subject of discussion in the past. There may not have been many options.
