Abby & Libby - The Delphi Murders - Richard Allen Arrested - #208

What I find interesting thought is he doesn't say, "I read the discovery and they are pinning it on me" or anything like that. He speaks about reading the bible, being sorry, and realizing he needs to let her (Kathy) go. I think this could be seen as someone taking accountability and accepting their fate. Would someone who is doing this because they are mentally tortured by being in prison really be able to think through all those aspects of it? Would they want to apologize to the families would they ask if their family still loves them? I think if he has an awareness that this will hurt his family and how his actions have hurt the victims families, but somehow he is saying he did it because he lost tough with reality? Sounds pretty grounded to me with the things he is mentioning.
I’ve been thinking he had zero conscience. He has some, but just nowhere near enough to stop himself after a few beers.

Trying fervently to catch up, but real life keeps intruding, as it will.

My heart’s last piece broke off, thinking as @Megnut said that Abby and Libby likely saw the white van go by when RA saw it, and perhaps hoped they’d be rescued.

I feel for BW as I feel for all the witnesses who probably wish they didn’t have to be part of this case, but in BW’s case I imagine he could only wish that his driving by would have actually stopped rather than momentarily interrupted RA’s plan.

This tragedy has been filled with overwhelmingly horrific details all along, but the detail that Libby was crying is just shattering. I always think of her as so brave and brilliant to have recorded BG, but she was still just a child, crying.

I would cry as an adult, but the helplessness and pain the girls endured when they should have had their whole lives ahead is really traumatizing.

I am convinced that Richard Matthew Allen, harmless looking CVS clerk, is the sole culprit and I certainly hope the jury thinks so as well.

I have great respect for this jury because they seem to be thoroughly engaged and are asking pertinent questions.

Justice for you, Abby. Justice for you, Libby.
Peace for your families.

Allen’s intentions, Wala said, were to (sexually assault) the girls. “(He) mentioned he thought they were older than their biological ages,” she wrote in her notes. Wala said Allen reported thinking Abby and Libby were 18 or 19 but said they could be as young as 11.

“they could be as young as 11”

:(

I ALMOST feel sorry for RA. He did it and he want to tell her that he did it and if she's still love him. Even Dr. Wala said he seemed relieved after the confession. But she just doesn't want to listen and say "no, you didn't. no no" so he keeps denying again. It should be frustating want to tell the truth and the other side "no no no, you didn't!"

if only his advisers and family had actually listened to him the family wouldn’t have had to endure all these absurd conspiracies.

The prosecution plays the “down the hill” video for Harshman. Harshman is viewing the stabilized version, which is time-stamped Feb. 13, 2017.
……
Harshman says “van was on that road between 2:27 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. He tells the jury he recognizes the voice from Allen’s jail phone calls, and that the voice is the same as bridge guy.

It’s clear she doesn’t want to believe he did this, so she attributes this to him losing his mind. When he does try and confess, she shuts him down, trying to convince him that what’s he’s saying isn’t true.

So she’s basically encouraging him to play up the mental health stuff, which I’m definitely not disputing the existence of.

He’d feel compelled to mirror her sentiments, and talk about what’s going on mentally, regardless of the veracity of that.

He’s terrified of losing his family, and would thus say things to appease them.

All that to say that the waters are muddied by the dynamic there.
Sometimes, when people are having mental issues, it's really hard to convince them that what they are experiencing is not reality. My friend was completely convinced there were bugs coming out from under her bed, even as other friends were standing right there assuring her there were no bugs.

It would have been almost impossible for her to convince him it was all in his head.

It’s understandable if you realize he was completely out of his mind - like he says on all of these calls.

Oh my, you must be behind.
Richard Allen is completely lucid when he is not faking:
>>

Kathy says “you’re not well.” Allen says “I’m well, yes. I am honey.

Delphi Murders trial: Day 12 live blog

There is the Dependence Personality Syndrome on display where KA is dominate.

When RA is with those who listen to him and let him speak he admits to the crime in detail to them.

No, he’s a plaintiff’s lawyer in civil cases. Lawyer Lee is a mediator in civil cases.

ETA: Neither of them have indicated they believe the Odinist theory but they believe RA should be allowed to put in his defense.
Thank you for the clarification.

For what's worth, I dont believe the Odinist theory - Never heard of Odinist prior to the defense bringing it up, and totally put it on ignore. Sorry, not sorry.
my 2 cents ;)

In addition, thank you for all your input here. It is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the twisted thinking of a man who sliced the throats of two young girls, wanting to be freed from the vivid memories of that, said pictures in his mind tormenting him, while being told to close the door on those memories and convince himself he didn't brutally murder them, when in fact he knows he did. My opinion...this demonic battle in the confines of this killers mind is the very source of his mentality.

The old poker adage is “strength means weakness, and weakness means strength.”

On its surface, that move wreaks weakness. It was a showy display designed to imply to the jury that the defense was holding a huge hand.

No reason to advertise it that early.

Yep.

A blatant “tell” and I hope the prosecution goes “all in.”

Side note—May I just sincerely congratulate and offer my praise to the several posters here who have openly discussed their previous problems with alcohol addiction.

Thank you for being here and lending clarity about RA’s drinking problem with your explanations of how alcohol trampled your lives. You’ve overcome that and are here trying to help.

I don’t drink but am a heavy cigarette smoker who finds it very challenging to quit. I admire you all for your sobriety.

More testimony from Harshman

Once the calls were played in court, McLeland asked Harshman about his investigation. Harshman described Allen’s demeanor as “subdued” and “solemn” during the calls. He testified Allen used the same tone and speech patterns as other calls and said there was no indication he was under stress.

Harshman examined a report from Dr. Monica Wala that included Allen’s confession. Allen had said he visited his mother and declined a lunch invitation. He then went home, grabbed a coat and drank three beers.

He told Wala he saw the girls on the trail and followed them with the intent to rape them. He ordered them down the hill and messed with his gun, which is when he believed the bullet found at the crime scene may have been ejected. He said a van startled him, prompting him to panic, take the girls across Deer Creek and kill them.

Harshman thought the van detail was notable. He wasn’t aware of it, so he conducted further investigation. He went through old reports and learned about BW, who testified Wednesday and owns property across from the murder scene. Harshman said the old reports didn’t mention Weber’s van or what type of van he drove on the day of the murders.

He didn’t think it was general public knowledge.

Harshman talked to Weber and developed a timetable. He knew Libby German’s phone stopped moving at 2:32 p.m. on Feb. 13, 2017. He found out Weber clocked out of work at 2:02 p.m. and it would take 20 to 25 minutes for him to get home.

Weber would use North 625 West, taking him past the murder scene. Harshman believed—and Weber testified as much—that Weber would have been in the area between 2:28 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., which lines up with the state’s murder timeline.

Allen gave the detailed confession to Wala in May 2023. Harshman didn’t read the report until August 2024.

The “Bridge Guy” video from Libby German’s phone was again played in court. Harshman testified that he believed the voice from the video was Allen’s.

in a marriage I think that there can be moments ( not murders) that a couple feels they must move past quickly and efficiently otherwise they might have a changed reality...so there are ways to subtly deny something and both partners are going to have an unspoken agreement to sweep the entire mess under the rug including learning an altered memory of the event ... ( I know! Psycho right?) <modsnip>. mOO

Rozzi mentioned that Allen was in custody and said, “I’ll tell them whatever they want me to say,” and asked if it would be unreasonable to think he would just say anything.

“That’s not my interpretation,” Harshman said.

Rozzi also asked about one of Allen’s early phone calls to his father. That led to an objection from McLeland and a sidebar with Gull.

On redirect, McLeland said he wanted to play another call.

The court broke for lunch at 12:40 p.m.

@MaxLewisTV

Delphi Murders Trial Day 12 Lunch Update:

-Started this morning by playing phone calls Richard Allen made while in prison to his family
-Master Trooper Brian Harshman testified that he listened to more than 700 of Richard Allen’s calls

-In a call on November 14, 2020 with his wife, Allen said to his wife that if it ever became too much for her than he’ll call the detectives and tell them whatever they want to know
-Allen’s wife was in the courtroom and began crying and put her head down

-Next was call to his mom on April 2, 2023 where he speaks about finding God and says the Lord Jesus Christ is his savior
-Then a call with his wife from April 3, 2023 was played where Allen said “I killed Abby and Libby”
-His wife says “no you didn’t” and he says “yes I did”

-His wife asks him why he would say that and he said “because maybe I did”
-Allen also said “ I wish they would kill me or let me apologize to the families at least”
-Then came a call from May 10, 2023
-Allen told his wife “I think I’m losing my mind”

-He then says “I need you to know that I did this” and “I’m definitely losing my mind now”
-He told his wife “I had a dream that I needed to let you go”
-During a call later that day Allen begins to say “if I get the electric chair” and his wife interrupts him and says “no”

-During a June 5, 2023 call with his wife he says “I feel like I’ve lost my mind”
-He then says “you know I done it right?”
-On a June 11, 2023 call he said “I did it” and then again says “I feel like I lost my mind”
-Allen also said “ probably going to have to kill myself now”

-Harshman said he believes Richard Allen’s voice is the same as Bridge Guy
-Harshman was then asked about the van reference Allen made in a session with his psychologist

NOTE: See yesterday’s testimony for context

-Harshman did see Dr. Wala’s report until this past August

-He found out Brad Weber owned a van and spoke with Weber
-Harshman believes Weber was driving up his driveway around 2:30 that afternoon which would match up with the confession
-Harshman said Weber’s van wasn’t mentioned in previous reports

-During cross, Brad Rozzi said that “Van” was mentioned hundreds of times in discovery which Allen would’ve received
-Rozzi asked if Harshman believed Weber was credible and he said yes
-Defense indicated yesterday that they might have evidence to contradict Weber’s story

-Rozzi brought up that Allen was psychotic when making those statements and was received Haldol shots
-He suggested that Haldol would’ve affected his speech
-He also pointed out that Harshman has no training in psychology or speech patterns

-Rozzi also asked about problems with Allen’s specific confession such as the bullet falling out of the gun before the girls were taken down the hill
-Rozzi pointed out that Harshman was essentially surveilling Allen all the time

-Rozzi tried to bring up a call Allen made earlier in the day on April 3 where he proclaimed his innocence and said he felt like he was in Guantánamo Bay
-McLeland objected and they had to have a side bar with Judge Gull
-Broke for lunch, it’ll be redirect when we return

@MaxLewisTV

No mention of van in police reports or discovery
WOW! This is damning indeed and the timeline fits right on the money! RA COULD NOT HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THIS BY DISCOVERY!! This encounter happened, there's no other logical explanation, IMO. This is THE smoking gun that bolsters all the other witnesses AND confirms RA=BG...the white van....game over.

There's no reasonable doubt after this, IMO, there's NO doubt. AJMO

I’ve been thinking he had zero conscience. He has some, but just nowhere near enough to stop himself after a few beers.
I still don't think he has a conscience. I think he was concerned about what his wife thought of him rather than concern for his wife.

If something tells me differently, I'll change my mind, but that's how I'm reading him at the moment.

He didn't care how old they were, though he purposely didn't follow a grown woman who was alone on the trail that day. He wanted young victims, imo.
