The only thing I can think of that one can do within 9 seconds in a toilet is throw something like a phone into the tampon bin. Even flushing something would take longer to check it flushed.
Splashing your face and washing your hands - longer than 9 seconds.
Nothing else makes sense.
And, it doesn't look like she cares a great deal about her appearance, so checking the mirror really quickly within 9 seconds doesn't make sense, either.
True! And why would you go into the petrol station toilets just to check yourself in the mirror - there is a mirror in the car where she just came from anyway

Five iPads seems like a lot? Although if EP had one and the children had one each then two of them were probably just old ones that had been upgraded.

Her having two phones is unusual, IMO. Understandable if one was a work phone, but we know she didn’t work.

Maybe the defence will argue that she had symptoms of urgency and she thought she needed to pass a bowel motion but then it passed? Less plausible though to then check out the servo sandwiches. I live in Aus, the sandwiches at a service station would be a very last resort.

Good point, and I don't know about other women, but I NEVER take my whole bag into a shop or service station. I take my purse only. Or my phone, to pay.
She had her cross body bag on when entering the bathroom and shop.

the 711 Chicken and lettuce/avo are one of my go-to's when I'm on the road. They are delicious. But not from a BP.

Oh good point. Same as me, I wouldn’t
take my handbag into a petrol station.
Would be interesting to know if she paid with a physical card (rather than her phone) which would make taking her cross body bag more plausible.

Would be a weak defence point, wouldn’t browse sandwiches if I was on the verge of nausea/ diarrhoea. And as a fellow Aussie, I totally agree, you must be very hungry to consider servo sandwiches 😆

At least we know what food they bought the day after the deadly lunch. I wonder if Erin ate any of it, or was she too ill?

“To the wayside doughnut stop at Koo Wee Rup where Erin Patterson and her children stopped for dim sims, a hot dog and coffee on a trip to the Tyabb airport the day after the fateful lunch”…(July 30)

“CCTV footage from a Caldermeade BP station, about 70km southeast of Melbourne, was played to the jury, depicting Ms Patterson entering the store shortly after 3.20pm on July 30, 2023.

Prosecutors allege the BP visit occurred during a 1 hour 40 minute drive to Tyabb for Ms Patterson’s son’s flying lesson.

They say she purchased a type of sour confectionary, a ham, cheese and tomato sandwich
and a sweet chilli chicken wrap.”

Erin can be seen entering the BP about 3.19pm and walking towards the toilet.
She exits the toilet about 9 seconds after entering.
She can then be seen looking at the sandwiches in the fridge section, before walking over to another area of the service station, which is out of view.
She makes her purchase before leaving about 3.22pm.
In the footage, Erin is wearing a grey sweater, cream pants, black sandals and a black crossover bag.

She wore CREAM PANTS? ----Not the pants I'd choose if I felt 'unwell' from food poisoning.
Maybe she bought some Imodium…..or a cork 🤣

The leftover food was discovered at the bottom of her outdoor red-lidded bin in an “seeping” brown paper Woolworths bag, the officer said. “It was primarily maybe one-and-a-bit beef wellingtons,” he said.

“I used another one of the bags that were in the bin … because it was seeping a bit from the bottom and I didn’t want to get dirty.”

The officer took the bag to the hospital where he handed it over to a nurse at around 10.19am.

Leongatha Hospital’s Dr Veronica Foote told the jury she was in contact with another hospital for guidance on how to treat Ms Patterson’s suspected death cap mushroom poisoning.

“So I, with gloves on, I took the samples out of the bag, put them on a clean A4 sheet of copy paper and took the photos,” Dr Foote said. She said there was “finely chopped and cooked mushrooms”.

Confused.

Are they saying she visited that same area where she got death caps from in the two days after the lunch??

Why??

Maybe she wanted to dispose of any unused Death Caps in an area where Death Caps grow. Rather than flush them down the toilet or bury them somewhere. Perhaps showing a little humanity for people or creatures that may be harmed elsewhere.

It must have been to get rid of some type of evidence, surely.

Not a particularly strong guess, but I am at a loss to think why else. Maybe we are about to hear some other testimony that will say what was found in that area by police.

snipped by me

I can understand drying some of them to save. But I think most people would also make a scrumptious mushroom/avacado salad with some of the freshly picked mushrooms. IMO

Co-incidentally katydid, Erin actually stopped at the town of Koo Wee Rup for a coffee. Koo Wee Rup produces 95% of Australia’s asparagus!

“Ms Patterson turned the car around to go home, making a quick stop at a Koo Wee Rup rest stop where she bought her second coffee for the day, the court heard.”

Defence cast doubt on accuracy of digital analysis

Dr Matthew Sorell has commenced cross-examination.

Following on from questioning about Patterson’s mobile data activity on July 31, 2023, defence barrister Colin Mandy SC suggested to Sorell that the phone record analysis identifying a possible visit to Outtrim could also be consistent with his client using her phone at her home.

Mandy: “(You said yesterday) the base station that gives you the best service at the front of your house, may not be the base station that gives you the best service at the back of your house.

“Therefore, a movement even within a house is consistent with the evidence you just gave?

Sorell: “It could be, I would need more information (about the location specifics of the house). But I accept that proposition.”

Even if the prosecution cannot prove 100% that she was at the Death Cap field that specific day, it is still important to show that it was possible and even probable that she was.

Circumstantial Evidence needs to be stacked up to build a solid wall. And one can take each brick individually and cast doubt by giving other possible explanations for each one. But when looked at as a whole, a pattern or a story begins to develop, and that is important during discussions because at some point, things may fall into place and answer a lot of questions....Or Not.

I noticed how the journalist says the handbag was “slung” over her shoulder. I guess saying “draped over her shoulder” just isn’t the image of Erin. IMO

“Wearing a grey long-sleeved top and white pants, with a black handbag slung over her shoulder, Ms Patterson gets out of her red MG car and visits the bathroom for nine seconds.”

Sometimes you do need a larger mirror so you can have a proper look at yourself.
Car mirrors are not a suitable substitute.

  • #277
Nine seconds or less would let me either have a quick look at myself, and/or decide I need to hold on if the toilet isn't clean enough.
Another reason I've decided not to use a public toilet was that that there was no paper left.

And we have only just begun to hear the police testimony. There may be much more evidence to come.

imo

Fair enough, but from what we have seen from EP, she doesn’t seem like the outwardly vain type - hair not made, no make up, eating unhealthy food. Doesn’t strike me as the type to want a larger mirror to have a proper look at herself.
