Good morning from inside

Ian Wilkinson, the sole survivor of the lunch held on July 29, 2023, was photographed this morning coming to the court here at Morwell.

The sunlight is streaming into the courtroom today. We'll take the small wins in what is likely to be a five-to-six-week trial that will stretch into winter.

Erin Patterson is in the dock, flanked by two court security guards. She is wearing a pink and white striped linen shirt.

The jury has entered the room, too. We've had a short delay this morning but we'll be into the evidence shortly.

The prosecution has called Darren Fox, the owner and manager of an appliances store in Leongatha.

He says in November 2023 an employee told him she believed she had sold Erin Patterson, who lives in Leongatha, a food dehydrator.

Fox says store records showed Erin had purchased a Sunbeam food lab electronic dehydrator.

The court is shown a tax invoice which says “deliver to” Erin, dated 28 April 2023.

Darren Fox, the owner and manager of Hartley Wells Betta Home Living in Leongatha, is called to the witness box.

It is this store where the prosecution says Erin Patterson purchased her dehydrator.

He says one of his employees told him in November 2023 that they believed they had sold a dehydrator to Erin earlier in the year.

After a search of his sales records, Mr Fox says an invoice was found showing Erin bought a Sunbeam FoodLab electronic dehydrator.

The invoice is shown to the court, showing a price of $229.

Darren Fox, who sold Patterson dehydrator, testifies

Prosecutor Jane Warren has started her examination of Darren Fox, whose store Hartley Wells Betta Home Living in Leongatha sells appliances, bedding and other household goods.

He has told the jury that in November 2023, an employee told him she had sold a dehydrator to Erin Patterson.

Fox then searched his records and found the tax invoice from that sale on April 28, 2023, which was for a Sunbeam dehydrator.

The invoice shown to the jury contains Patterson’s name and a Gibson Street address for delivery, but Fox told the jury the appliance was picked up at the time of purchase.

Fox has been excused without any cross-examination.

Prosecutor Sarah Lenthall has begun her examination of Wilkinson.

He tells the court he is the pastor at the Korumburra Baptist Church.

Heather, 66, was teaching English to migrants when she died in 2023, Wilkinson says.

Mr Wilkinson lets out gentle laughter when talking about wife

Ian Wilkinson confirms he met his wife Heather in 1979, and had four children with her.

As he recounts the family history of Heather, he gently laughs at the end of some of his answers.

“Heather [was] the baby of the family,” he says when discussing her siblings.

Wilkinson says he met Erin through his nephew, Simon Patterson (Erin’s estranged husband).

He is asked about his relationship with Erin:

I would say our relationship was friendly, amicable. It didn’t have much depth. We were more like acquaintances. We didn’t see a great deal of each other.
He says when Erin attended their church, they would have “casual conversation”.

Wilkinson says Heather had a “very similar” relationship with Erin:

Heather would have seen Erin more than me, talked to her more than me. But we didn’t consider that the relationship was close.

I'm sure there were a gaggle of photographers outside the courthouse. All the photos seem to have him wearing the same clothes, so I think they are all just different pics taken as he walked in this morning.

I'm glad to see him looking healthier and heartier than in the photos taken right after his release from the hospital.

The early years of Ian and Heather Wilkinson’s marriage

Prosecutor Jane Warren has now started her examination of Wilkinson.

He describes meeting Heather in 1976 and marrying her in 1979. They had four children together: David, Luke, Ruth and Elizabeth.

“I lived in Korumburra 41 years. So together [with Heather], it must be about 39,” he said.

Wilkinson says Heather was initially a stay-at-home mother who also worked as a teacher’s aide. Eventually, she started tutoring students in a special program, before pivoting to teaching English to migrants.
