Judge Christopher Beale is continuing to speak of the pain Erin Patterson unleased with her murders.

The family members she killed, he said, were good to her. She took loving grandparents from her own children.

These are his own words:

Your offending involved an enormous betrayal of trust. Your victims were all your relatives by marriage. More than that, they had all been good to you and your children over many years, as you acknowledged in your testimony, not only did you cut short three lives and cause lasting damage to Ian Wilkinson’s health, thereby devastating the extended Patterson and Wilkinson families. You inflicted untold suffering on your own children, whom you robbed of their beloved grandparents.”

“Four generations of the extended Paterson and Wilkinson families have been traumatised by your crimes, not to mention their friends Don’s mother, Martha Patterson, who aged 100 made a victim impact statement. In it she craves the God’s healing for her family. ’The families] keenly feel... the impossibility of shielding the youngest from the incessant discussion of the case in the media, online, in public spaces, even in the school yard.

Many also struggle to cope with work and studies, and many have experienced additional financial burdens.

A history of Erin Patterson's life given​

Having finished recapping the case and aggravating factors, Justice Beale moves on to Erin Patterson's life.

He says as the defence did not tender much evidence with regards to this, his account of her life will be limited.

The court hears Erin Patterson, maiden name Scutter, was born in Adelaide on September 30, 1974.

He says she met Simon Patterson in 2005 and became romantically involved, before marrying in 2007.

They shared a tumultuous relationship that saw them moving across the country to WA, QLD and then to Victoria.

In 2009 they had a son, and in 2014, they had a daughter.

They separated permanently in 2015.

She has no criminal history and maintains her innocence.

Erin Patterson's life in prison​

Patterson has a maximum security rating in jail due to her crimes and notoriety, putting her at "significant risk" from other prisoners.

She has not been deemed a danger to other prisoners herself.

Justice Beale outlines the isolation Patterson is being kept in at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, where she spends about 22 hours a day in her cell.

Patterson is not allowed to mix with other prisoners.

Her meals and medicines are delivered through a flap in her cell door, and in cases of a lockdown, she is kept in her cell for 24 hours a day.

She has little contact with other individuals or with facilities such as the library.

He says that her offending falls into the worst categories for murder and attempted murder.

“I have no hesitation in finding that your offending falls into the worst category for the offences of murder and attempted murder,” he said. “As the case law makes clear, the fact that it is possible to imagine even worse in the worst instances of such offences does not refute that categorisation.

“The gravity of your offending warrants the imposition of the maximum penalties for your crimes.”

He says while the chance of reform is considered for all prisoners, Justice Beale says the seriousness of Patterson's crimes makes this less significant.

"I have had regard to all of these sentencing purposes in formulating my sentences but rehabilitation has taken a backseat because of the gravity your offending," he says.

He circles back to the main dispute of today: parole.

"Is it inappropriate to fix a non- parole period? Would fixing a non- parole period be contrary to the interests of justice?" he tells the court.
