So many, many thanks travelbug for the local input. It's what we've been so desperate for here.

The prospect of locating anything in the landfill sounds bleak. :(

are you sure they don't inspect stuff like in the back of a truck and people just dump the stuff off themselves??? I knew that landfill was there, but assumed that stuff was inspected if public dumped

I've never heard of a landfill in Iowa that inspected the trash that people take to the landfill. And most of them will only take cash, not even a check.

They may well do things differently in California, though.

Well, maybe RB has put the landfill onto the list of places where Bob will not be found.

I had old vinyl removed and the workers didn't seem to have any problem cutting it into squares. They used a big knife that looked like a box cutter on steroids and just went zzzzzip while it was still glued down. Then when they pried it up, it just came up in squares the right size for the big trash can they used.

I want the phone number of your workers.

They always checked my drivers license to verify that I lived in Orange County. However, my license was from out of the area and they would accept a utility bill or phone bill.

Do driver's licenses have a photo and birthdate on in CA?

man I feel sick...no freaking wonder the silence...sure could explain a lot
Anyone else feeling that way maybe?

Not feeling it, sorry, sreshowtime.

The landfill would work for someone who was a cool professional (or really talented amateur) but we're talking about a bunch of middle class people here. Whichever person did it would most likely have been way, way too paranoid to dispose of the body in the landfill, where they would know they would have to interact with one or more human beings. Too many potential pairs of eyes to see something and take note of a license plate.

I strongly feel that whoever did this would have wanted to be somewhere where they thought no one could see them when they were doing the actual disposal. I don't know if I can really explain it but it's somehow connected to the idea that if no one sees it, then it didn't really happen.

It is. Even in cases where the perp confesses, many landfill searches fail. Dogs aren't much use because there is just so much scent everywhere. Plus, the terrain is highly dangerous and if it were up to me, my dogs would never be exposed to it.

Just the weight involved in searching through one days' worth of trash is often just mind boggling. I have a friend who worked his way through school by working as a trash collector (he said they snorted over the appellation of sanitation engineer). He said that the job basically involved running 5-10 miles a day while lifting 5-6 tons of trash. And that is just one guy on one route on one day. Multiply that by an entire city.

I have a feeling that the professionals may have tools that most homeowners don't have. They used this giant heat thingie to heat up the squares as they removed them and all they had to do was slide a giant spatula-like tool underneath to get them up. It was truly amazing and it took the crew of three guys less than two hours to do quite a large room.

Route from Placentia to the landfill. Address on wiki just says it is 'west of the northern portion of Chino Hills State Park' and I can't work out exactly where that is.

This article provides a clearer picture of the terrain of the landfill.
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/trash-496514-landfill-energy.html

The buildings in Zwei's photo are only a small processing area. The trash is distributed over all of the hillsides and then covered over with dirt.

As far as concern over whether someone would observe what was being dumped, I found this information from http://www.hillsforeveryone.org/index.htmlinteresting:

"This ridgetop landfill at the top of Valencia Avenue near Brea is a visible scar on the hills, so much so that it can be seen on satellite images from space." sic... "The increased capacity has been made possible by new technology which has allowed them to more efficiently compact the trash using satellite-guided equipment."
