The original source of this information is the scanner feed. I tried to reply to this post once, but it got deleted for including information from the scanner feed. So let me re-write a clearer reply that leaves out the direct source I observed it from, and filter it through journalists. (I'll figure this out eventually.)
It was subsequently mentioned by a journalist at the press conference, where the police confirmed they followed up on this tip. It was investigated, and confirmed to be unrelated. The police press conference is a legitimate source, yes?
I also cited the Nighttime Podcast in my deleted post. His podcast is from Nova Scotia, and verifies sources well. Would this fall into mainstream news? (Nova Scotia has almost no investigative journalism left, so his podcast has had legitimate scoops on serious cases.)
