I do worry that Walmart would reduce important benefits to employees to offset the tariff - things like removing their healthcare and paid time off.
Maybe, but in the state where I live Walmart employees usually get Medicaid coverage. Walmart helps them apply. Most of their employees are part-time.

They probably provide some kind of health care coverage to upper and middle management employees, like store managers and above.

I recall about 20 yrs ago I worked a holiday season at Kohls Department Store. Their health benefits were ridiculous. Didn't cover anything, really. Most everything was out of pocket and if you had to be hospitalized with a serious illness or accident, they covered something like $10,000.

And then you have the assault on Medicaid to worry about.

I'm glad to see politicians from across the aisle working together to get things done. It makes me proud to see that Canadian politics still has this level of decorum.

I think Poilievre could take a lesson from these guys, he's still stuck on the toxic algorithm.

Prime-minister designate Mark Carney met with Ontario Premier Doug Ford this morning, ahead of the provincial leader’s trip to Washington, D.C., to discuss tariffs and free trade with a top United States official.

Ford says in a statement that he and Carney had a productive discussion, agreeing on the need to stand firm in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump imposing tariffs on Canadian goods.

I know it is a joke but the DNC and the Dem party has to regroup and do a lot of thinking. They had all the cards in 2020. They should have found a better choice than Biden. One can’t make mistakes when so much is at stake. I sometimes wonder if Michelle Obama would have been the choice, but I don’t know her that well; would be interesting to see what people think. Personally I still feel that not fighting for Buttigieg was a mistake. Even our best Dems stay slightly to the right of the center.
P.S. the GOP, too. I respect others’ religion, but you can’t run on religious platform any longer. Young people are having harsh lives because of economy. So I know that Trump was not the GOP’s ideal candidate, but they were left with him because they couldn’t win with their own ones. Something to think about.

Biden won in 2020. Their mistake in the most recent election was trying to run him again in 2024 and they then compounded that mistake by giving Kamala the nomination without having a vote or convention where everyone could vote. Too busy trying to prove to centrists that they aren't the "radical left". It's 2025 but this country is nowhere near to being able to elect a woman, let alone a black woman. Too many racists. You see it in all the complaints about DEI. You know who really needs a leg up in this country? White men. As Trump says, "this is a meritocracy" (even though he was gifted a company by his father and has earned literally no merit in this life unless it's measured in bankruptcies and unpaid wages. JMO

Spot on with Walmart. They really push their employees to get Medicaid. If 30 hours a week is the threshold for full time and to qualify for benefits, they will schedule people 29 hours a week, encourage and assist them in applying for government assistance.

The federal government announced a plan on Wednesday to slap tariffs on $29.8 billion worth of American goods to hit back against U.S. President Donald Trump after he imposed punishing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum early this morning.

Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, the government's point person on Canada-U.S. relations, said Trump's attack on Canadian industry is "unjustified and unjustifiable" and the government must retaliate as the U.S. inserts "disruption and disorder" into what was once one of the most successful trading relationships in the world.

President Donald Trump openly challenged U.S. allies on Wednesday by increasing tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to 25% as he vowed to take back wealth “stolen” by other countries, drawing quick retaliation from Europe and Canada.

So there's no left leaning or right leaning political ideologies in Canada? Everyone is a centrist?
What's I'm saying is that any assumption that Canada is nothing but woke liberal democrats could not be farther from the truth. That is a myth perpetrated by the current president because it unified his base against Trudeau, and thereby Canada. It's propaganda, not fact.

I agree with your sentiment and I wasn't claiming all Canadians are one way or the other. I apologize profusely if my message came off like that, but I can assure you that I generally believe the opposite of what DJT says. There has to be a slight majority at any given time though, right?

This is more of a rhetorical question but I guess I’m wondering if the Trump supporters feel ok with all these economic issues that we are facing - looming recession, trade wars with our closest allies, food prices higher than they’ve ever been, etc.

I think it is going to take a little while before they experience the higher prices. It won't happen overnight. One day in the not-too-far-distant-future they will realise that the two bags of groceries that used to cost them $50 now costs $90.

If they are one of the unfortunate govt employees who has lost their job ("I didn't think it would happen to me, I voted for Trump"), they might feel it sooner.

Australia has been experiencing high inflation for a while ... it crept up on us. Our Reserve Bank has been playing with the interest rates, trying to bring it down. It will eventually work.

Some in the US just don't understand how relatively strong the US economy was when Biden left office.

imo

"U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday said the issue of how the United States is going to "take over Canada" will not be discussed at a gathering of G7 foreign ministers due to take place in Canada on Thursday."

This is rich, given:

a) it's being hosted by Canada
b) the US has been antagonizing all the other G7 countries and including them in this tariff war.
Ok this may seem like a duh question but can trump get in to Canada because of his criminal record ?

Speaking as a Canadian, I think that American leaders really need to start speaking out and condemning this. I know that apparently Americans think the annexation threats are silly and not worth addressing, but they are at least definitely not read this way outside the US. If Americans don't want Canadians to be certain that what Trump is saying does not represent American intentions, their leaders—governors, Congress people, and so on—need to start speaking clearly now.

In theory, I am sure that a waiver would be issued or something to allow him egress. Exceptions can be made.

I agree 1000%, but elected Democrats are pretty spineless. JMO

Yeah, sexually harassing felons convicted of fraud are really appealing people. I totally understand.

"You people can't afford eggs but go ahead and buy a Tesla"
I can afford eggs and I’d never buy an EV. That hasn’t changed. I’m slightly amused to see Tesla owners destroying their own property. It’s sad to see them throwing it in the water as that affects the environment. imo
