early January, Trump was asked by a reporter whether he would use military force to annex Canada and make it the 51st state. He responded that he would use “economic force

Trump is and always has been a low-class carny and carnival barker. .

Don't listen to his words, watch what he is really doing with his real actions. Not the "will I or won't I" political tease language.

The Governor of Kentucky said ‘Don’t touch our bourbon,’ and I said, ‘Governor, that’s the first thing we are going after. We’re going after their bourbon,’” the premier said in a speech earlier this week. “Well, we’re the largest purchaser of bourbon in the world for Kentucky bourbon manufacturers—they’re done, they’re gone.”
Speaking to Vassy Kapelos in an exclusive interview on CTV News Channel’s Power Play on Tuesday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said the trade war is going to cause “significant harm” to people and businesses, including those involved in the state’s bourbon industry.

“These tariffs, which are the result of one individual, are going to cause our prices of gas to go up, are going to cause our prices of groceries to go up, are going to raise the cost of housing all across the United States,” the Democrat said, likening the levies as a betrayal from the Trump administration.

Canada has
Andy Beshear is between a rock and a hard place. He has been trying to tell people what will happen with tariffs since we'll before the election and other policies that will hurt our state but they voted for DJT anyway. Right now they are pushing through a state DOGE committee to make even more cuts. Andy can veto but he'll be over ruled by the Senate and house majorities.

I'll be honest here. I don't have a link but I can try to find one but when Andy took office and threw aside politics and mandated closings and masks and other stuff his reward for trying to keep us safe...the reward for doing the right thing were ARMED protestors literally on his front porch with his children right inside.

Andy has fought for every Kentuckian and yet our Congress endorses cuts to healthcare and taxes for the rich. We have a lot of people who will be hurt. They simply do not care.

After leaving office Gov Beshear is moving onto national politics. He announced that recently.

There are many Kentuckians that are not complacent and do not support the things happening. We have politicians that send Xmas proudly standing with AR 15's father wife and sons and daughters who have their engraved pink a blue miniature AR 15's.
MOO

We have a long row to hoe. I just hope and pray the next governor is as strong and fair and loves the people of Kentucky more than money and power.

I can say that a lot of the US population is also bewildered as to why there is only a weak response from the Democrats and why the Republicans are in a terrifying Third Reich-like goosestep with Trump and Musk in everything.

I am so confused about Israel and Gaza today. There was some progress, then Trump started making ridiculous noises in the middle of it and now it's all a disastrous mess. I do think Trump would have no problem building a series of waterfront exclusive properties and golf courses on the bones of the Palestinians. Horrible, horrible.
The Middle East has their own plan for Gaza rebuild that does not involve Donald turning it into his private resort. The realtor-president doesn't care about the people of Gaza, only about the land opportunities. The Middle East still has to add details on permanently removing Hamas government from Gaza.

Please don't mistake lack of public protests for support. I know of not one person who supports what Trump is doing with regard to Canada. Not a single one.

I think the lack of protests is many-fold. There are so many horrible things going on that it's almost impossible to know what to protest or get enough people on board. That's done intentionally, IMO. When there are so many horrid cases out there, then people divide their outrage and it seems like there's no meaningful support for one cause.

Many in the federal government have lost their jobs thanks to this administration. Many not in federal government have been laid off due to the economy and inane threats against business. Many are much worse off now than they were even a few months ago and many others are living in limbo to see what happens next with student loans, research funding, education system, vaccines, and fully preventable disease outbreaks that are killing children. America is in real trouble and it's all thanks to this MAGAlomaniac and his asinine sidekick. People are exhausted from the turmoil of the 20s and all the "shock and awe" shenanigans of the last couple of months, and at the same time, on the edge of their seat for the next shoe to drop. It's hard to plan, organize, execute and wide-scale protests under those conditions.

MOO.
I have watched the head-spinning turmoil that Donald has intentionally unleashed - with the goal of keeping people off-balance and unable to process one drastic change before they are hit with another. At this time, it is possible to see the bigger picture, which is to silence freedom of speech, compromise privacy, strip social program rights and supports, isolate the USA from global cooperation regarding global concerns, and more or less turn the USA into a third world country governed by a gang of extremely rich elite with their own private military. It's quite likely that Donald and friends will use government funds as their own private piggy bank as long as possible.

Has Donald said exactly how tariffs will make people rich again, or is that some fuzzy leap of confidence. Canada has said exactly how tariff money will be used - primarily to assist those most harmed by tariffs. It is not a tax that the government can then use as they wish.

Donald will collect an extra 10% or 25% tax from people in the USA who need Canadian products (e.g.: electricity, oil, lumber). Where exactly does that money go? We heard about his External Revenue Service - how is that money spent? How does that reduce taxes for 340 million people?

Kentucky is state that Senator Mitch McConnel hails from. As long-term GOP leader of the Senate, he did a great deal to establish the pathway for Trump to ascend to power by defying laws. Mitchell was absolutely essential in establishing the very conservative majority of the US Supreme Court, bit by bit, but most notably denying the Supreme Court Justice position to Merrick Garland through very devious political means. He also worked very hard to stack more than 200 very conservative judges in lower courts throughout politically significant regions.

All this has allowed a convicted felon to be re-elected and to be abusing the Executive Order privilege.

He's getting abuse and mocking from Trump now, because that's what Trump does. Don't feel sorry for McConnell or Kentucky.

According to a report from the Globe and Mail, confirmed by CBC Toronto, that tone sparked a call from Trump's own commerce secretary Howard Lutnick. He asked Ford to ease up with his rhetoric, a request the premier refused.

Conservative strategist Shakir Chambers said Lutnick's call shows that Ford has managed to grab the attention of people in the White House and his appeals have them concerned. He's also channeling the frustrations of many Canadians who are angrily watching the tariff threats unfold.

Coming from a parliamentary system, I've never quite understood how the US system works - in that there is no leader for the opposition party between elections...only shortly before an election.
There are people who seem to emerge as leaders in Congress/Senate, but they don't pretend to lead the wider public...eg Nancy Pelosi...?

Kentucky is vocal about their alcohol and Ontario, but every province across the country has stripped the shelves of USA alcohol. California wine, Budweiser, all replaced with international and national options. Trade barriers for alcohol across Canada have been removed, so Ontario and BC wine can be sold across the country at a good price.

That will remain in place until all tariffs are lifted. I suspect that Canada was one of the best customers for California wines simply because it's cheaper than EU imports.

uh why not use what each have...i take your cream then you can take my cream???

Yes, that is exactly what is happening right now. This is the normal way the dairy industry on both sides of the border gets the supplies it needs during the high demand ice cream season.

I expect to read sales of Maple Syrup Ice Cream soar all over Canada this summer.

I do feel sorry for an old man in a wheelchair, but not for the cynical leader. Many have been blaming here, so going down into history with such a name is bad enough, if Mitch can even understand it now. Not sure.

Ouch!
I agree with everything you said but I do feel sorry for Kentucky.

McConnell is from Alabama originally. I have voted for someone else since he first ran for Congress.

FWIW I called his office last week. No one answered and told me the lines were overwhelmed and to send an email or snail mail.

Typical Mitch.

Of course. I would see Gov. on interview news shows. I really admired him and coming from KY with the super maga reds, I worried for him. Now look.

Oh he understands. He actually grinned when asked about not using his weight to remove him from office after Jan 6 etc. He said while grinning something to the effect ... I don't have the power to determine the next president only the American people do. They have spoken...pause while grinning....and he's back.

This was on 60 minutes a couple of weeks or so ago. He was there to discuss his legacy.

This is his legacy.
