Carney can probably oppose Trump's actions very well. Former bank governor VS someone who loves money.

imo

" Carney is now referencing the United States, saying Americans "want our resources, water, our land, our country".

"Think about it. If they succeeded, they would destroy our way of life," he says.

"America is not Canada," he adds. "Canada will never ever be part of America in any way, shape or form."

"These are dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust," Carney says.

"We are getting over the shock but let us never forget the lessons - we have to look after ourselves and we have to look out for each other

"We need to pull together in the tough days ahead."

Addressing people across Canada, he says: "I promise you this, together we can and we will get through this crisis.

"We can and we will come out stronger than ever, and we will because Canada is built on the strength of its people."

"Vive le Canada" - love live Canada - he says, before wrapping up his remarks. "

Carney is right. Donald wants to destroy everything that Canadians and Indigenous Peoples value and know. <modsnip>

Trump was interviewed on Fox and asked directly whether he thought there would a recession this year in the US (in light of the fact that Atlanta Fed is predicting negative GDP growth in the first quarter). He said he didn't like to make predictions. (🤨) But he said transitions take time and that transitions are tough and he'd only been in power for a few weeks. But that they were doing big things and that they are bringing wealth back to America.

He looked a bit dejected and wasn't his usual belligerent self.
In other words, he now clearly understands that the tariff war is going to hit the American economy hard.
(No kidding! Everyone has told him that. But now his supporters will see the result.)
They both looked extremely nervous , to me.. and for good reason.. Trump is trying to ease folks into the idea that it's going to take time, but 1/2 of America knows it is only one paycheck away from bankruptcy... one week without a paycheck and it's good night , Vienna....if Trumps big idea takes longer than a week, pfftt.. ....

Add on top of that, the inevitable scenario when someone in the household gets sick, and requires treatment.. then it's debt recovery and the repo man at the door. Trump knows this, and so far he has no clue as to how to provide a safety net for those for whom even ordinary life is fraught, but throw in a tariff war against Canada, and Mexico, and China, and AU , and get the Danes fired up , and it's unbearable and intolerable. Americans will not be able to tolerate it.

I am from South of the border and I don't think any of Trump's policies, including the trade war with Canada, are funny at all. Many people here are simply terrified of what is to come, especially with no coherent response from the opposition party. JMO

Yes, there will be a federal election in the near future. Trudeau resigned, he's been replaced, but his replacement is not who Canadians voted for, so the scheduled October 2025 election will be moved forward.

The debate will between Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre.
However, unlike the US, Canadians don't directly vote for the Prime Minister.

They just vote for a local member of parliament.

I'm wondering why Carney is saying 'Americans' instead of 'Trump' or 'Trump government'

I think it must be to pump up the Canadian Patriotism mood.

Maybe to needle Americans to protest?

I think most Canadians understand it's Trump, not Americans.

I thought the Golden Age of America was just around the corner or at least that's what this dumbahh told us. And what sickens me even more is that Trump will blame the inevitable recession on Biden.

Apologies - I should not generalize.

I know it's not everyone, and that many people see this unfold with the same horror experienced by Canadians. I will be more careful going forward.

I think that Americans fall into one of three camps right now.
1) Angry with Canada (and Mexico, and...): believe Trump and think the US is literally subsidizing Canada (a clear lie).
2) Oblivious: have no idea that there is a trade war going on and remain oblivious to anything involving other countries.
3) Scared out of their wits: those that voted against Trump and are petrified right now and they definitely hate what is happening to their own country and hate what the US government is doing to other countries.

And a whole bunch of US people will not bother to check the facts and see that the economy improved under Biden.
Biden actually left Trump a strong economy, in world terms.

imo

"Under the Biden administration, real GDP rose 12.6 percent .... "

Let him - continuing on with infantile name-calling will confirm that rudeness is Donald's one-dimensional brain wave: rude, belligerent, name-calling. Let's see if that's all Donald knows.
It's well known, a matter of fact, that he'll never do that to anyone face to face unless he has someone like his peanut gallery VP nipping at heels. It's said that he has never fired anyone he'll get a secretary or billionaire to do it, but he's frightened stiff to do it himself

Eby looks the kind of bloke who would do that with a regretful yet firm little smile, too. I am, you may have gathered , a raving ratbaggiing fan of Eby, ... I just go to pieces whenever he gets behind a mike..

I am seeking treatment for this, I hasten to add... ;)
You are not alone I love that guy he could be as good if not better then Horgan

I had forgotten about Horgan!!!.. He was terrific as Ambassador, too.. and what a thrill it was for me to see Chretien speaking, and in his unique and fabulous way still.. here in AU we don't get as much news about Canada as I would like, but then , Canada, like AU , manages to behave itself, and rumbles along in peace and prosperity, just like AU, and NZ, an Denmark so no one is interested in nations that know how to conduct themselves, in the proper manner....... :p

JMO: it is something different. I think it is extremely concrete perception of humor, if at all. So maybe, attacking someone is joking in his world? There are people who are practical jokers - while I don't like it, I tell them that OK, I accept it if you accept me doing the same to you. But the problem is, it doesn't work this way. Any joke aimed at them they perceive as an attack, nor can they joke about themselves. It is hard as humor can release the tension. But perhaps, Trump's inner problem in dealing with people like Trudeau or Obama is that they have innate sense of humor, so misunderstanding lies at a deeper level.
It doesn't really matter whether Donald thinks it's funny to call the Prime Minister of Canada a governor, or a sovereign country a state. He has been told that it is offensive and he continues to do it, therefore he is intentionally rude and offensive.

He does that to everyone and everything that doesn't LIKE him. Cringe for anyone especially an old mess of person in his position.

Well there you go of course. They as well are WAY above him on every level.

New Mexico natives are unaware of that change.

I have heard them in my home routinely refer to themselves as ""Indians" and "natives". Likewise, I have also have heard others in the Espanola area to themselves as "Natives" (to distinguish themselves from local "Spanish" and the smaller Anglo minority).

Heck, even reservation signage uses the term "native". Posted: Private road, Tribal members only beyond this point. Non tribal members, even if Native, must be escorted at all times.
How about that! Indigenous People in Canada decided how they would be called, so we respect that.

Meanwhile, also on Sunday morning, NBC’s Meet the Press TV politics show was interviewing US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick.

He pushed back on concerns that the prospect of Trump’s global tariffs would cause a recession in the US. “Absolutely not,” he said. “There’s going to be no recession in America.”

Lutnick added: “Anybody who bets against Donald Trump, it’s like the same people who thought Donald Trump wasn’t going to win a year ago … you are going to see over the next two years the greatest set of growth coming from America … I would never bet on recession, no chance.”

(this reminds me of that Bob Newhart sketch, I think it was Bob, about General George Armstrong Custer peering over the trench, and saying, 'oh, it's just a bit of feather, don't wo....aagghhhhaghhhhagghhhhhhhh )
