MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – The CEO of UnitedHealthcare was killed in a Midtown shooting Wednesday morning, sources told PIX11 News.

Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just before 7 a.m. near a hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, sources said. Video posted to Citizen showed police tape on the Midtown street as police arrived at the scene.

He was rushed to an area hospital and later died. Thompson was in New York City for an investors meeting at a Hilton hotel, according to sources.

The shooting is being investigated as a possibly targeted hit, sources said.

(About people not being interested in 99% of murders because there is nothing interesting about them.)

I have another example. That AM, I woke up very early, saw the news about UH CEO being murdered and, without getting into details, assumed that he was mugged, robbed, and murdered in the process. NY, big city; I asked myself, “how long will it take to replace him?”, and fell back asleep. It was much later, when I got up and read through the details which pointed at a statement, that it became interesting. People killed in the process of a mundane crime, CEOs or higher, would soon be forgotten. Either the victim has to be exceptionally nice, photogenic and we can identify with them (some cases of DV culminating in a murder), or the case has to have some bizarre elements, or this.

(Note: During PA hearing today)

What it was like in the courtroom for the Mangione hearing

CBS News New York's Ali Bauman described the Pennsylvania courtroom as packed. There were about a dozen NYPD officers seated in the front row waiting to take him back to New York.

"I mean, there were people sitting on the floors, people standing in the back. It was - people waiting outside to get in. Right now behind me, actually, there are even supporters of Luigi that are outside here with signs saying 'Free Luigi,'" Bauman reported.

Bauman said Mangione was clean shaven, wearing an orange jumpsuit, with his hands and ankles shackled. He appeared to be more subdued than his last appearance, Bauman reported, and "seemed relaxed, he at times was even smiling, and even shrugging, and being very expressive with his facial expressions."

Mangione's attorney told the Pennsylvania court things have changed since they initially fought extradition last week, saying they have been in constant communication with his legal counsel in New York, and he is now confident this decision is in his client's best interest.

"We're ready to do this now. Before we weren't ready. It's in his best interest," Mangione's attorney Tom Dickey said.

There was a significant amount of downtime in the 90-minute hearing, Bauman reported. For some of it, Mangione whispered with his attorney, at times smiling and shrugging, making very animated facial expressions as they spoke. But when his attorney left {Mangioni} at the desk alone to speak with the judge, Mangione read papers in front of him, talked to the sheriff's deputies standing beside him, and spent a while seemingly staring off into space.

Just catching up on the tv news coverage of this today, and a couple of things really piss me off.

First, there was no reason to do this insane perp walk with all those heavily armed cops. He could have been transported quietly and secretly, without a single camera capturing him. It plays up the underdog/martyr image he has cultivated with a significant minority of the public. I mean, just look at this fricken picture.

Secondly, and related to this, there was absolutely no reason for Mayor Adams to be present. He shouldn't be saying a word, as it is not in the interest of justice for him to be discussing this case. He's turning this into some political sideshow, with himself at the center of it. It makes the case political, and hurts the terrorism argument as a result.

I wish there was some way to just try this Federally, and have New York step aside.

I feel the opposite. I just don't believe they should showcase the terrorism. Do the COLD BLOODED murder.
The post back thread, by @legalese, said it "right" to me.

Geez though, Adams....AND the perp walk...NY can really do better than this.

That's why I think the Feds should take it. You don't have to worry about the terrorism element to get the first degree murder conviction.

This is the very definition of a case that deserves life in prison. No question that it was premeditated.

There is a sketch in this article of LM in federal court today seated between his attorney and someone else who resembles the spouse of LM's current attorney (spouse is also an attorney who is representing Sean Combs/Diddy).

If it is her spouse, I wonder if they will be working as a legal team on this case.

High-powered defense attorney Marc Agnifilo has joined his wife Karen Friedman Agnifilo to represent UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione in New York.

The two attorneys were seen walking together into federal court Thursday ahead of Mangione’s arraignment.

Marc Agnifilo is also involved in the high-profile criminal case against music magnate Sean “Diddy” Combs, who faces federal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy.

I am so saddened by the number of people who are condoning and even cheering on this murder.

This is not my beautiful country. Or maybe it was all along and it was well hidden up until now.

Either way, I'm saddened.

ETA: Having worked in the healthcare industry for years now, I completely get the rage against it. It's justifiable.

But I am saddened that anyone thinks murder is a step in the right direction.

The polling I've seen puts the number at around 20% who view this guy favorably. That's obviously insanely high, but social media is giving the impression that it's an even greater number.

And yes, I hate the health insurance industry with a passion. But a dead father doesn't improve anything, and the reaction portends a bleak future when it comes to targeting certain high profile and powerful people. The next time it may not be an insurance executive, but a politician or some other industry leader. That's the sort of thing that happens in the third world, not here.

This needs to be nipped in the bud.

But a dead father doesn't improve anything,

Clumsily snipped for focus, not necessarily directed at you

It's been pointed out numerous times that BT was a father, as though that makes the crime more heinous.

If he weren't a father, would that make the crime less heinous?

Of course not.

The crime was heinous whether BT was a father or not.

Ugh, I hate this SO MUCH. This rock star treatment of what is, after all, just a murderous bum.

This enormous contingent of LE from various agencies is:

A) completely unnecessary as he’s in cuffs and 2 cops would have been enough for safety’s sake, and:

B) does nothing but aggrandize the celebrity that has accrued to this two-bit murderer.

This is Secret Service levels of security. This is Taylor Swift to the tenth power levels of security. This is I don’t know what, but it looks like a “Mayor Eric Adams Production.”

Either the mayor is trying to distract from his own problems right now, or, as I think most likely, he is making a literal show out of “I got my man, because it’s MY LE perp-walking him, so I’ll show everyone not to mess with MY city.”

I’m all in favor of no one messing with NYC, but this stinks to me of Eric Adams’ egotism. A gratuitous spectacle that only enhances and glorifies this murderer.

I know the city said this was to prevent someone from trying to free LM, but that doesn’t ring true to me.

JMO of course.
