For exactly the reason we have 4 threads already on this site alone for a crime only a few days old. It's brought a very very hot spotlight on UHC and bubbled up the aggressive dislike of most average Americans who have dealt with insurance nowadays. He made it news...he's made these executives pay mind to how America seethes while they take in obnoxious profits and sky high salaries.

He did it to bring this point to forefront and where better to do something if you want max cameras on it? New York City .

It would've been out of news cycle by now if he killed him in his driveway in Minnesota.

Moo
Possibly but I think the levels of publicity if he had been shot on his driveway would still be massive, more international intrigue being shot in NYC but such is the levels of hatred of his company and other healthcare companies it would have dominated social media/MSM just as much imho

You generally don’t want a fake ID from the state you are living in. Any tiny mistake, and a bartender or someone is likely to notice it.
Agree. We just moved (back) to Florida. You wouldn't believe the amount of identification needed to even get a license. We had to give the DMV valid passports, current TX DL's, two bills within the past 30 days before the front desk person would even give us a number.

We were in the DMV 2.5 hours, just waiting for our number to be called. Our new licenses look pretty unique, too. It has our picture along with a hologram of our picture on the license. I don't know how you would duplicate something like this??

They are pretty sophisticated at the airport, too. They run your license through a scanner and also take your photo to make sure you match up with your ID.

I figure that a hostel just does a cursory check to kind of make sure you meet their (out-of-town) criteria and look like the photo. The people at check-in (unless familiar with different states) don't know what to look for in the different ID's.

JMO.

A paid shooter sure, but not a professional hitman. It’s ludicrous to pop in to Starbucks for breakfast, be it water, a coffee or a 3 course meal.

Insurance is private industry and has to make a profit to survive. IMO, it is there to cover the "Bell" curve and those unfortunate few that fall on the outer fringes are usually the ones who suffer most. In sum, life is not fair.

"Thompson earned around $10 million per year with his salary at United Healthcare."

Maybe where those profits are going is what is making US Citizens angry.

Sorry I was more ranting at Anderson Cooper & his speaking compassionately about equine injuries and need for this weapon.
Anderson Cooper is Soooo misinformed— I was schooled by someone else on this issue earlier. Gun manufacturers will make up any excuse to create another toy for enthusiasts.

no It would still be in the news cycle due to the high profile nature of his crime. I'm also thinking he's very sloppy, as he's allowed his face and the crime to be caught on camera.

oh absolutely. Meanwhile they cut reimbursements to doctors and the customers have to pay high premiums

The idea that a professional hitman turned up to a job hungry and thirsty is preposterous to me.
I think he was buying time and avoiding loitering right at the scene long enough to be noticed.

Surely the same logic applies if it was a hit by anyone else? Why did they go all the way to New York when they could shoot him on his driveway in Minnesota.
Because it was easier to get to New York than Minnesota? Also the weather conditions this time of year are better in New York. I’ve also considered that it may not have been BT who was strictly the target, it could have been any exec from UHC.

it's very unprofessional for the mayor to say stuff that law enforcement has not
That's my always-under-investigation mayor! He's also former LE.

This is an interesting point, something that I was thinking about back during discussions about him potentially being international. Hostels are very different in the US and don’t have a great reputation. If housed by “locals” they’re usually more associated with drug use, prostitution, etc. The decent ones as you mention are usually involved with international exchange programs and are exclusive—not available or advertised to the general US public as a place to stay, as you mention.
Great point re: the hostel. This spurred another thought I had. I've stayed at a number of different hostels, and - generally - HI USA hostels are the biggest, the cleanest, the most 'corporate', and most well traveled hostels. Usually, they're a bit more expensive, and more stringent with their rules. It was an interesting choice for the shooter to stay there, vs. something like Jazz on Columbus Circle, which was much closer to where the murder took place. According to Google reviews, there's no 24/7 reception and it seems much more - lets say flexible - than HI USA. The flip side of that is if HI USA was busy, he could better blend in - but there's also a chance he would have been seen by fewer people at Jazz.

I would be really curious to see footage of the hotel lobby that morning. Was an accomplice planted in the lobby to tip off shooter when BT was on the move? Maybe that was the person he was talking to on the burner phone? Video footage of someone on their cell phone sitting in the lobby?

He just had the timing so perfect.
I initially thought that as well, but I’d have to believe LE would have been all over that pretty quickly.

I wonder if the jacket and the backpack were bought second hand so they would have someone else's and their dogs DNA all over them, probably far more of it than his.

Targeted doesn't necessarily imply 'one and done', and if a suspect is capable of killing a targeted victim he is certainly capable of killing anyone else (even more unsuspecting targets). I would hope that withholding the identity of a perp who has recently publicly executed someone else wouldn't be standard investigative protocol. And no one knows definitively that he isn't a serial killer (injustice collector?) or potential spree killer, so one would hope LE wouldn't know his identity but keep it from the public.

Cunanan's victims were also (eventually) targeted, FWIW.

JMO.
IMO, no. If they believed the public at large was in danger, they would have released the name with BOLOs. So far no crimes have come up that fit what this person did, no other crimes are being connected, no other high profile targets have been targeted.

So, the simplest explanation is the one that's been postulated-he was targeted, gunman is in hiding, no other victims. I mean sure it's possible other CEOs could be targeted, but so far that hasn't been shown to be the case.

Where was he using the ID? At the hostel, I am sure they are not on the lookout for a fake. They just want to be paid-- he probably paid in cash. I am also sure they didn't make a copy. When I used hostels elsewhere, no one was making copies. Although when I have taken the bus or the train long distances, it was marked on the ticket that ID was required but I have never had one asked for. Doubt he used a credit card or atm machine 'cause they would know by now if he did. ID was probably noted by state and number at hostel and a run on that ID proved false.
I don't believe I needed to show my ID when I took Amtrak a few years ago. Purchased the tickets online.

I think he lives in NYC and did all that traveling to throw everyone off his game.
I agree that it is a distinct possibility.

I am very intrigued by his persona. Young, athletic, fast, expensive clothes. Rides a bike, eats a granola bar:)
Murders people in cold blood.
