Chronic pain is unbearable. I think very few people understand this. I have no idea if it pertains to this guy at all; however, what you say is so true.

Chronic pain is incredibly depressing and changes one's personality.
Isn't it also hard to get pain meds now? This has more to do with pharmacies and lawsuits against the manufacturers because these drugs are addictive. I think that I read that Kroger Pharmacy was fined millions for filling legitimate pain prescriptions. I didn't understand that logic.
Yes, IIRC they said local LE responded. It sounds more like the McDonald's employee called local 911
I am amazed that the local police responded so quickly before the bus pulled out. Was the perp still on the bus? If so, where was he headed?

Possibly not cooperating:

Here are the latest developments:
Mangione was not talking to authorities, Fox News has reported.
He did not have a lawyer as of Monday afternoon, according to the outlet, which cited an unnamed law enforcement source.

I admit I wanna see his mugshot !
Also --are mommy and daddy ponying up the cash for the best lawyer available, or is LM using his own money (I'm assuming he has his own bank account ?) ?
Imo.

Saturday, a male hair style wall poster was def. this shooter, I swore, from earlier photo's. Thought, ohh, maybe a hair salon poster model. Saying, I may also not of been so sure to actually call LE.

I think based on available photos of LM, the eyebrows are a dead giveaway.
Add to that the chin and general shape of his face ?
Imo.
Yeah, it must have been that taxi photo that sealed the deal.

Maybe it's just because I live in NYC, but someone who looks like LM wouldn't stand out at all.

This has been in the media cycle for about a week. The public sentiment has not been at all sympathetic to health care, or their CEOS. That is what he was trying to achieve IMO>
Yes! I think his plan was to find a safe place to stay to cool off, and mail his manifesto to the New York Times which is what Ted Kaczynski did.

I was assuming the arrest was right there at McD's ?
Have to go back and re-read.

The only way I’d be confident enough to call is if his appearance was similar to what we saw in that photo (hood and mask).

If he wasn’t wearing a mask then there’s just no way. Countless people look like him.

So I have to assume he very closely resembled that photo.

Mangione was valedictorian of the Class of 2016 at the Gilman School and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. His family owns Turf Valley and Hayfields Country Club, NBC News confirmed.

Mangione is the cousin of Baltimore County Delegate Nino Mangione, R-District 42A, the lawmaker's office confirmed.

It's unfortunate he did things this way.

He had the knowledge and the means to try to make real changes, yet he did this. I don't buy that he was so frustrated with cooperate America at the young age of 26 that he felt this was the only option. I'd say that is true if he was maybe 50 and had been trying for 20+ years. He likely hasn't even had his masters for 2 or so years.

He not only had smarts and money, but he was connected politically and in his community via his family's name. He had MANY options.. many more than most of us have.

It always amazes me that you could have video proof, dna, fingerprints a confession and there will still be someone here on WS saying that they got the wrong guy lol.

I am very impressed by all the WS posters who talked about this being against insurance companies and predicting that there would be a manifesto. I actually thought that this was far fetched. I know...WRONG again! ;)

I still want to know how he got the information on BT.

Finding a manifesto saying he acted alone means he didnt....

Look at the shooters backpack straps in the shooting video and then compare with the video of the backpack found by police....In the shooting video the straps are tan to white....in the found backpack video the straps are black...
if this is the guy....he wasnt acting alone.
Darn good pick up! Numerous explanations.

I’m sure his parents will, he’s their son.

That's about where I am. I try to be compassionate to both sides and understand, while not condoning. I'm not really one for dismissing and preaching about how someone was "just a narcissist" or acting out. "He threw it all away and now he'll pay!" No. Young men are always going to seem callow in some sense. Nor do I automatically assume that he just lost his way, burned out, had a stalled career and felt stymied, took too many psychedelics, was wracked with chronic pain and became twisted, like has happened to some.

Maybe he truly wanted to be a revolutionary.

Maybe he saw enough darkness and didn't see a conventional way forward anymore, whether it was looming Singularity in his own career - I mean, he was certainly some sort of AI Insider and we're on the verge of things changing beyond recognition very soon. This whole crime may be inconceivable 5 years from now due to AI advances.

Sometimes being a revolutionary involves targeted violence. It's a huge risk to take with the one life you have. How is God going to judge you, let alone family and society? I wouldn't take that risk. As someone said way back in an earlier thread, this feels "foreign." That's because it's not accepted/acceptable in American democracy to be a revolutionary. But maybe it was too dark for him.

I don't expect anyone on a crime-solving forum that enshrines law enforcement values, ethical reporting and the rule of law to say he did anything right. And I'm glad it's like that, too. It's amazing we can even have this discussion.
Yes, that is the story being created about him. I think some of the storytellers and audience are going to be disappointed with their anti-hero in reality.

There is no way his family members didn’t know that was him imo

Here’s his fake ID in case it hasn’t been posted.

Replying to my own post because I just noticed the gun. That appears to be your standard Glock style ghost gun knockoff. It has to be the most common variety on the market.

So that means there was not a veterinarian type gun, and this weapon was in fact jamming. That was would have been thanks to the suppressor (silencer).

I agree to an extent. But worth pointing out is that we're not looking at his book shelf of physically curated objects, we're looking at a list on a website (Goodreads) that basically functions as a "check mark" that someone has read something...whether or not they agree with it, liked it, endorsed it, etc.

To me it's not much different than someone scraping our WebSleuths posts and pointing to someones post about a skull fracture, a gunshot wound, a person who disappeared without a trace, etc. There are millions of these on here. We talk about it because they are curious things and we are curious people. Yet if either one of us or anyone else here was arrested tomorrow for such a crime all the talk would be about our posting history and we would be hearing the same type of soundbites about how we had an internet posting history about criminals and their crimes and seemed to associate ourselves with this type of thought.

I have to disagree with you a bit that a physical book shelf is much different than an online one. He's twenty six. He might not even have his own place in which to set up a book shelf. Maybe his Goodreads profile is his own online version of one.

People of his generation do a lot of things online, including curating and reading books that are relevant to them for reasons deeper than "Oh there's a random book, might as well read it." JMO

Suspect had a 'three-page manifesto', police say

Police say they found a hand-written three-page manifesto on Mangione when arresting him.

"We believe, at this point, our investigation is leaning toward he was acting alone," police say.

"As far as the manifesto, like I said, I don't have complete details of that. It's in the possession of the Altoona Police."

Finding Mangione appears to be a complete surprise. Police say they did not have his name prior to today.

Arrest was carried out by police in Altoona, Pennsylvania

Chief of detectives Kenny says that there is no information they can provide at the moment on what happened during the arrest, which was carried out by Altoona Police.

He adds that the investigation is still ongoing, part of which includes officers combing through Mangione's social media.

"Preliminary, it seems like he had some ill will towards corporate America," Kenny says, but adds that further details will come out as part of the investigation.

"...had some ill will towards corporate America" pretty much describes 85% of Americans these days.

Health Care, Expensive? Ditto, His Education?

sbm @MassGuy Thx for your post. Is this the right Luigi?

Gilman High school valedictorian in 2016, w plans for degree in Art.Int.?!?*

Health care may be expensive, but what about preK-12 education? 2024-2025 $,** but likely was pricey for whatever yrs he was enrolled.

Pre-Kindergarten $21,235
Kindergarten $26,175
Prep-One through Fifth $34,365
Sixth through Eighth $35,400
Ninth through Twelfth $37,690

Not loose coins from under the couch cushions.
For what? Coming to this murder?

"Luigi Mangione, who was valedictorian of Gilman’s graduating class this year, based the speech he delivered at graduation around a similar theme: maintaining tradition while also pioneering innovations..... his favorite class in high school was biology (though his favorite changed from year to year), and he plans to pursue a dual degree in artificial intelligence at University of Pennsylvania. The track includes a degree in computer science and cognitive science, and though Mangione thinks his path may change, he is sure he will be studying engineering in some capacity."

It appears that the unacceptable (IMO) state of US healthcare has gotten to the point that it makes private preschool though ivy-league educated people angry at the way they and their own families are treated.

This isn't ridiculous. This is the natural progression of oppression and abuse. It spreads. Eventually, even the trust fund babies feel it.

This man appears to be a murderer. And he will face consequences. But it does not make him a hypocrite if he has empathy for others abused by our health care system. And it does not even mean he has to have empathy if he was personally negatively impacted by the healthcare system. Because the impact is almost universal now.

May justice be served. May Brian Thompson's survivors find peace. And may the USA finally develop a less costly and more effective healthcare system.

Apologies if this has been answered before but this thread is moving fast. When exactly was LM nabbed? Must have been some time Wednesday if he was nabbed in a McDonalds opposite a Greyhound bus station and he still had the gun on him.
