Wow, if I am looking at the right picture that mugshot does not look like him in the SM accounts at all! I agree that there is probably a mental crisis aspect to this crime. That isn't to say he shouldn't be held accountable for his actions, or that he didn't know what he was doing was wrong... just that I think it's a significant factor. He looks way more dishevelled there, like he hasn't been taking care of himself. Many mentally ill people tend to "let go" of their appearance when their mental state is so altered, they give up. I guess he may have not been sleeping these past couple days, though. Interesting that he started to shake and did not seem to fuss about putting his mask down. Guess he knew it was over.

Interesting that he started to shake when asked if he’d recently been to NYC.

Not so laissez-faire now that it’s real, it seems.

Jmo
I am surprised the he didn't start shaking when they asked him for his ID. No way he was walking out of that McDonalds as a free man.

[snipped by me]

I hate reading images, so here is the criminal complaint (text copied directly from my computer's read of the image, so there could be errors):

TO WIT: On the aforementioned date and time, On December 9th, 2024, at 0914 hours, Affiant Ptlm. Frye and Co-Affiant Ptlm. Detwiler with the Altoona Police Department were dispatched to 407 E Plank Road, Altoona, for a suspicious male who resembled the male from a recent shooting in New York from December 4th. Officers were advised in the dispatch notes that the male was wearing a medical mask and a beanie.

Upon arrival, Officers were able to locate the male matching the aforementioned description sitting in the rear of the building at a table.

He was wearing a blue medical mask and was looking at a silver laptop computer that was placed on the table. The male also had a backpack on the floor near the table he was sitting at. Co-Affiant made contact with the male and informed that Officers were called to the McDonalds for a suspicious male matching his description. Co-Affiant asked the male to pull down his medical mask so he could see his face. The male complied and pulled down his mask; Affiant and Co-Affiant immediately recognized him as the suspect from New York City incident after seeing photos released of him from media sources. Co-Affiant asked the male for identification and provided Officers a New Jersey Driver's license, bearing the name Mark Rosario and a date of birth 07/21/1998. Affiant took the license and ran the information through the dispatch center. Co-Affiant asked the male if he had been to New York recently and the male became quiet and started to shake. Additional units from the Altoona Police Department arrived on scene to assist Affiant and Co-Affiant in identifying the

At this time, dispatch was unable to find any information on NCIC with the information provided by Officers. Lt. Hanelly arrived on scene and also ran the information the male provided to Officers but still found that no record was able to be found. The male was advised that he was under an official police investigation and if he lied out his identity, he would get arrested. The male then stated that his name was The Defendant: Luigi Mangione with a date of birth of 05/06/1998. The driver's license that the Defendant provided to Officers was found to be a fake identification card. Ptlm. Fox asked the Defendant why he lied out his name and the Defendant replied "I clearly shouldn't have." Lt. Hanelly then instructed Officers to place the Defendant into custody for 4101(a)(3), Forgery and 4914(a) False identification to law enforcement.

The Defendant was the placed into custody. The Defendant was handcuffed and was searched on scene. The Defendant was then transported back to Altoona Police Department's station where his property was inventoried pursuant to the Altoona Police Department's policy. During a search of the Defendant's backpack, Officers located a black 3D-printed pistol and a black silencer. The pistol had a metal slide and a plastic handle with a metal threaded barrel. The pistol had one loaded Glock magazine with six nine-millimeter full metal jacket rounds. There was also one loose nine-millimeter hollow point round. The silencer was also 3D printed.

The Defendant is being charged with 4103(a)(3) Forgery, 4106(a)(2) Firearms not to be carried without a license, 4104(a) Tampering with records or identification, 907(a) instruments of a crime, and 4914(a) False identification to law enforcement.

The Defendant will need to be fingerprinted and photographed.
So at this time, they can’t prove he did it…. But they can’t have him leaving the country or anything so they have to slap him with the other charges.

Same, I don’t see arrogance but he seems very downcast. If he has already spoken to his parents, then it will be even more real to him now. They must be heartbroken.

in his perp walk though, he looks arrogant to me - head up, chin up, shoulders back
and in his mugshot, I see his facial expression as sober but determined

Since he was looking at his laptop at McDonalds, I bet he was perusing the news and updates about his NYC killing.
Then, ...he was faced with the police officers...were you in NYC recently?
Ironic. No wonder he shook.

I tend to agree with this. Something clearly happened within the past year, as there was apparently a complete change in behavior (isolated and off the grid).

He knew what he was doing, and knew what he was doing was wrong, so he's completely responsible for his actions, but something going on mentally may go a long way to explaining why this came to be.

I'm interested in the timing of the back injury, and if things started to change after that.
I agree, may have mental problems but not legally insane.

I get so tired of politicians running to the mic when there's breaking news on a big case. We need to hear from the investigators not the politicians. This goes for both sides of the aisle! All preachy now.

Presser

Pennsylvania governor:

"In America we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint."

Responding to people treating him as a hero:
"He is no hero. The real hero is the person who called 911 at Mcdonalds this morning."

Asking for information in regards to the suspect's travels throughout Pennsylvania.

All that meticulous planning, but the eyebrow “evidence” is darn near ironclad. Who would have thought?

do we know what he was doing in Altoona? Like did he disembark there? I’ve read the McD’s was a rest stop for the bus, but would he really have the time to go inside, get food, and set up his laptop?

Yeah, no:

He had $8000 0f cash on him....didn't know where it came from.

Luigi Mangione, the man that police have identified as the suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson made his first appearance in a Pennsylvania court Monday night.

The judge read the entire criminal complaint out loud to Mangione after the suspect said that no one had read it to him prior to that moment.

Mangione verbally pushed back against two claims from prosecutors in court, first a claim that because Mangione was found with $8,000 in cash on him that he was trying to evade authorities.

The other claim was that because he had a Faraday bag on him, which blocks cell signal, this showed evidence of criminal sophistication. Mangione said to the first claim that he did not know where the money he had on him came from, saying maybe it was planted. On the second claim, he said that the bag was waterproof and he didn’t know about criminal sophistication.

He was ordered held without bail. He did not enter a plea.

His next court appearance will be on December 23 in Pennsylvania pending an expected warrant from New York.

The YouTube account with his photo and name was created in January of 2024. Would it be possible for someone to have changed the name of their YouTube account to his, once news of this broke? There was a scheduled video that was apparently going to be made public around this time, but the account has since been removed.

Yes, very possible that's exactly what happened.

It also could have been scheduled by him....he may have been regularly changing the scheduled release time as more time passed without being arrested.

MOO but I think he may have initially intended to flee the country but abandoned that plan for whatever reason (possibly spooked by the media coverage?). Especially since I read in an earlier post that he had a passport in his name on him when he was arrested.

He was reading books about surviving back pain. The x-ray on his profile looks to be a male of his age and size. He has quite a bit about pain and healthcare on his want to read, including quite a few more books about surviving spinal injury.

I would bet my bottom dollar that he had back surgery.

Just a guess. IMO.

According to NYT: a classmate who was in the same Penn fraternity said Mangione mentioned in Feb 2023 that he had suffered a spine injury.
