Oooh... does this mean possible Federal charges??

I think the feds will continue to investigate to see if there are grounds for federal charges, even possibly domestic terrorism if LM's actions meet the criteria for a domestic terrorism charge.

I think possession of a ghost gun is a federal crime and, if so, I would expect that federal charge to be brought against him. I don't know what the sentence is for that crime, but it would add time to his NY state sentence once determined, and hopefully would be served consecutively. The longer they can keep this guy locked up and off the streets, the better.

The grandmother of UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione left her family at least $30 million in her will — but specified that anyone “charged, indicted, convicted of or pleads guilty to a felony” would be cut out.

Whoa. That's very interesting.

Doubt it.
Many states have their own laws.

It doubt it would meet the legal definition of federal charges.
If so, it just magnifies & prolongs the attention.

All of this makes me wonder, what did LM actually care about... other than himself?
I just hope that wherever he travels, he will always be doing so in shackles.

Someone (I can’t recall who) on WS used to always say “I’ll eat my hat if xzy happens.” That’s kind of how I feel about it. I tend to think they’ll go for hung jury or jury nullification. But like massguy said earlier, it’s a slam dunk case. MOO
They have to present a defense of some description. I don't think SODDI or insanity is going to cut it with his clear-headed planning and admission of knowing it was a crime.

The Daily Mail is the one saying it’s cruel trying to work up some drama in the absence of any real information, imo.

"The suspected killer of United Health Care CEO Luigi Mangione claimed his mother made him eat steak with his right hand even though he is left-handed.

Luigi Mangione's disturbing claim about way his mother made him eat

All imo
^snipped

What’s funny—not—is that it seems the Daily Mail has it wrong. Luigi is not left-handed, he is right-handed, according to his writing in that Goodreads review of The 4-Hour Workweek. They misinterpreted what he wrote, I guess?

I can’t add the link to the page where I found Luigi’s exact words for the review as it’s not msm, and his goodreads is now private, but he clearly says he’s right-handed (“since I was right-handed”, he wrote!).

He liked to cut with his left (knife) and eat with his right (fork), but his mother told him that wasn’t the proper mannered way, that he was supposed to cut with the right with the knife, and then switch to the fork in the right hand to eat the slice, which he thought was trifle and inefficient, even at 6 years old.

Moo

If he's not specifically in the will, I don't think rules can be placed on the actual heirs re who they leave their $$ to. Jmo

Very decent lady. Jmoo.

Making his way that day along a river gorge in the Nara region, Mr. Mangione had fled his day-to-day life in Hawaii to soak in hot springs, meditate, catch up on books and do some writing of his own.
<snipped for focus>

This is hilarious.

Edited to add:
Not directed at the WS member who posted this, but at the NY Times writer who wrote it.

I don’t think SODDI will cut it either but I bet that’s where they are headed.

I don't think we have ever seen a more slam dunk case. There's a pile of direct evidence; video, pics, DNA, fingerprints, the gun, fake IDs, etc. There's no way he gets a not guilty verdict. IMHO

Moo...I do not think LM's social/financial status is important. This is about people not having any power to be heard. This applies to the health, grocery, rent etc. There are so many financial monopolize that now control most necessities of life....moo

“After a drizzly hike through one of Japan’s lush mountain ranges earlier this year, Luigi Mangione, a computer engineer in his mid-20s who had set off on a long solo trip to Asia, paused to record a voice message to a friend he had met while traveling abroad.

Unbelievable.

I just have an aching back from time to time, but reading so many terrible stories here, from fellow posters who are really suffering from painful conditions, this part makes me so angry.

A hike through Japan’s mountain ranges? How does that correlate with a back so badly messed up that he was in constant pain? That his life was short-circuited due to his condition, which he exacerbated by surfing? Which then allegedly became worse when he slipped on a piece of paper?

I see the X-ray, so I know something was in fact wrong, but it’s clear proof that he did have surgical intervention.

The rest is on him, IMO. I think physical intimacy would require less strain than hiking mountains. He could make adjustments during sex but you cannot avoid stressing your back while mountain-climbing.

From what I’ve read here, we have members who have terrible pain just getting through a day.

It’s ego and not pain IMO that led him to cut down BT. A yearning to once again be somebody, even if no one knew his identity.

ITA- my “eat my hat” was in reply to the initial poster asking if anyone thinks he’ll plead guilty. I’ve been wrong plenty lol. Do you think he’d plead?

Note: IANAL

Besides an insanity plea which is unlikely in LM's case, as far as we know, there is also the issue of competency to stand trial. I assume that each state has their own laws regarding competency, but I thought I would bring up the competency laws in California, since we looked at them on WS for another case.

In January of 2024, a software engineer at Google, Liren Chen, age 27, brutally murdered his wife, Xuanyi Yu, age 27, also a computer engineer at Google in Santa Clara County, California. It has been almost one year, and still no plea has been entered by Liren Chen. His plea hearings in Santa Clara Criminal Court are set at regular intervals, but so far at each scheduled hearing no plea has been entered and now the next plea hearing is scheduled for January 2025. He was hospitalized for awhile, and maybe still is. There hasn't been much MSM reporting on this case for some time. It is assumed that his treatment is psychiatric in nature, but that has not been confirmed by the MSM or the courts or his attorney.

Below is some information on how California law deals with defendants who are not deemed legally competent to stand trial. I don't know how New York state deals with competency issues, but if LM's attorneys in the NY case try to go in this direction, then it might be some time before LM goes to trial or even enters a plea at a hearing.

According to California law, a defendant can be held in a state hospital for "competency restoration" for up to two years and not enter a plea during that time if unfit to stand trial and enter a plea.

If a defendant is found to be incompetent to stand trial, they are ordered to attend a competency restoration program.

In California, that means that if they are charged with a misdemeanor, they will receive treatment in a county jail in a specialized competency restoration unit. In misdemeanor cases, they can be held in a county jail for up to 1 year for competency restoration.

If they are charged with a felony, they will be sent to a state hospital for competency restoration. In felony cases, the defendant has up to 2 years to become competent.

Once they are found to be competent, they will be returned to the county jail and the criminal proceedings will move forward.

If they are still incompetent to stand trial after two years, it gets more complicated, but they could be acquitted and placed into a conservatorship by the state and/or released to the family as conservators to care for the individual.

The terms insanity and competency are two legal terms that come up often in the criminal justice system. There are several differences between them.

i am not sure why I have not even heard about this case. I do remember incessant discussion regarding insanity with the Vallow/Daybell case however. The problem is , we never really get to hear anything about the going on behind hospital walls.
But I do feel certain we will all be discussing insanity this as the case progresses.
I doubt LM will agree to this plea, however.

Important to note that to be extradited from Pennsylvannia to New York, he has to be formally charged with a crime in the state of New York. From a really good post upstream, I recall the state has 2 weeks to get the charges laid, so I'm happy to see NY is not wasting any time on getting charges by Grand Jury laid and facilitating his extradition.

Looks like he may be spending Christmas in Pennsylvania as a minor celebrity in a small jail. That is probably the best thing he should be looking for at this point.

Things will change quite a bit when he is incarcerated in New York and he is up with the jail's criminal hierarchy. His rich kid- private school - Hawaii surfing background will not serve him well.

* I apologize that I can't recall the very good post describing the extradition process and the contributor, but I sincerely thank the author for posting it.
Not sure if this is the post you're talking about, but MassGuy explained a bit about extradition in this post:

Almost sounds like he had that spondy condition since childhood, he went for a spinal fusion surgery and it failed. ( I'm not sure if you're born with it, or if it happens because of an injury)

Some people are born with it, but it mostly happens due to injury. Typically worsens with age.

I think about all the healthcare costs that could've been supplemented instead of purchasing "solidarity" jackets and/or contributing to the legal fund of a murderer. These are the types of poor financial choices that can turn an unfortunate, untimely injury/surgery into a potential bankruptcy.

JMO.

Thanks. <modsnip> Everyone is po'd at getting fired, but seeing 24% going out at the same time probably made it seem less personal and not a reason to take up murder. Iirc the 24% was >100 employees.

Yes... but the 24%, because they had each other, could really get angry about it... rather, than say, so despondent and depressed to cause self harm or harm in general.

I still believe we have not found out what the "actual trigger" for his radical change" is/ or was.

See for me the whole thing about admire and support LM’s cause but don’t condone his murder of BT is a real slippery slope because if you admire and support his cause, to me it follows that you are condoning his murdering BT.

Maybe I’m missing something and honestly my brain is admittedly a little bit fried at this point due to sleep depravation, but do his supporters mean something akin to they don’t condone what he did but admire and support him because he did the dirty work for them/on their behalf? or what exactly?

TIA
