LIVE: Press conference after man arrested in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing

AP is live from Pennsylvania after police arrested a “strong person of interest” Monday in the brazen Manhattan killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.A quick-thinking McDonald’s employee in Pennsylvania alerted authorities to a customer who was found with a weapon and writings linking him to the ambush. The suspect, identified by police as 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, had a gun believed to be the one used in last Wednesday’s shooting of Brian Thompson, as well as writings suggesting anger with corporate America, police said.

Nick Mangione Sr. had a ready retort when people questioned how he had purchased a high-profile local country club in the 1970s: “They asked me what family I belonged to. I told them, ‘I belong to the Mangione family. The Mangione family of Baltimore County,’” he told The Baltimore Sun in 1995.

The patriarch of a sprawling Italian American family, who died in 2008, was a self-made multimillionaire real estate developer who owned country clubs, nursing homes and radio stations while supporting an array of civic causes.

From Court: Luigi Mangione had a black 3D printed pistol, metal slide and plastic handle. Also six 9mm Full Metal Jacket rounds, at least one hollow point bullet, and a silencer that was also 3D printed.

The Commonwealth alleged when asking that bail be denied that he also was in possession of $8K in USD and $2K in foreign currency. Also bags that are utilized to block the transmission of cellular data.

In a strange moment, Luigi interjected and rejected those accusations. He said someone must have planted the money, because he was not in possession of that much. He also says the bags are waterproof and meant to keep his electronics dry.

Mangione says he has not had contact with his family recently, has no drug or alcohol issues and has no criminal history. He first gave the judge his childhood home address, but then when pressed, revealed his most recent address in Hawaii.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 12/23/24. Mangione asked if he could decide later if he would retain private counsel or would rely on a public defender.

He was tall, about 6"1. He walked with his head up and made eye contact with the judge and the Commonwealth when they were speaking. He was barefoot and cuffed around waist and ankles. He spoke eloquently, with confidence. He appeared coherent and understood what was going on.

He did not have an attorney present. He was allowed to speak when answering questions for the judge to decide if bail should be granted. He said he would decide later if he was going to retain private counsel or a public defender ahead of his prelim on 12/23/24.

A manifesto found online, with the subtitle, "Luigi Mangione's last words", mentions UnitedHealthcare 7 times, details his mother's physical ailments as well as his own. To be clear, this is not confirmed to be the manifesto found on him today at McDonald's. Here are excerpts:

"I authorize my own act of self-defense in response to a hostile entity making war on me and my family."

"These might be my last words. I don’t know when they will come for me. I will resist them at any cost. That’s why I smile through the pain."

"Each appointment was promised to be fully covered, until the insurance claims were delayed and denied. Allopathic medicine did nothing to help my mother’s suffering. Yet it is the foundation of our entire society."

"They promised coverage, and broke their word to my mother. With every delay, my anger surged. With every denial, I wanted to throw the doctor through the glass wall of their hospital waiting room. But it wasn’t them. It wasn’t the doctors, the receptionists, administrators, pharmacists, imaging technicians, or anyone we ever met. It was UnitedHealthcare."

"That’s where UnitedHealthcare went wrong. They violated their contract with my mother, with me, and tens of millions of other Americans. This threat to my own health, my family’s health, and the health of our country’s people requires me to respond with an act of war."

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old identified as a “strong person of interest” in last week’s slaying of a health insurance executive on the streets of Manhattan, was reported missing to San Francisco police last month, The Standard has learned.

In court papers made public today, an NYPD detective reiterated key findings in the investigation he said tied Luigi Mangione to the CEO killing, including surveillance video and a fake ID he used to check into a Manhattan hostel Nov. 24. Mangione is being held without bail.
