Why didn't he cover his hands?
Yes very odd…
That plus being seen at Starbucks makes me kind of think he won’t be found alive…otherwise seems rather stupid to be so brazen and careless JMO

The first I've seen that the victim was staying across the street from the Hilton. So what was he doing at the Hilton? Why didn't the killer kill Thompson outside Thompson's own hotel?

(Thompson) was seen on video leaving his hotel across the street to enter the Hilton several minutes prior, about 6:40 a.m., police say.

Just a thought.
If there are clothes in the backpack, maybe they are work clothes. Maybe the suspect works near there. He changes into work clothes and goes to work afterward
Maybe it's just the angle of the image but-- that backpack looks very "symmetrical" or "Balanced" to me. Top to bottom, left to right, it looks even "stuffed". I know when my husband fills his backpack, there's more stuff on the bottom, different things I put into pockets, and it sometimes looks a little cockeyed. When I saw the shooter's backpack today it reminded me of some blankets or beach towels that come folded on themselves to make them easier to transport.
MOO

A horrible cold blooded murder. Sounds like the suspect left a trail. A phone, a candy wrapper, likely DNA on the get away bike, possibly financial information too. The NYPD are offering a $10,000 reward. If this was a poor homeless person, they would likely do a quick investigation and not a manhunt with reward.

According to this article:

- Thompson has 2 teenage sons, ages 16 and 19. His wife is a physical therapist. A neighbor described Thompson as “very quiet.”

- Police have stepped up patrols of the company headquarters, although there are no specific threats.

- 11 people were arrested outside UnitedHealthcare’s headquarters during a protest in July over the company’s alleged improper refusals to pay for care.

- Several 911 calls have been made from headquarters since January 2021. Most were hangups but 3 were for an “unwanted person,” 1 was for an unfounded threat, 1 was for a disturbance, and another stemmed from a civil dispute involving a client in California over a $1000 reimbursement.

Someone on the inside fed this guy the information. There are six doors and hotels on all sides. He could have stayed at the Hilton itself after all. He could have been staying anywhere, he could have used a Uber etc…. The killer knew exactly where he would be.
Someone knew exactly which door would be used to enter? Maybe as the closest door to get inside? Sure seems someone close to BT was waiting, watching and sharing the details.

Guy obviously planned to use citibike to get away -- had to have used a credit/debit card that can't be traced to him. He apparently drops the bike off on the upper east side -- 82nd and Madison. Brazen.

Per CNN, this was a one day investor conference that Thompson was going to attend that was to start at 8:00 am.

He was staying at a hotel half a block away and across the street from the Hilton.

The phone was likely a burner, he’s likely not worried about his dna - maybe not from the country, the gunman is likely experienced and got paid well. He knew what he was getting into, he knew this would make headlines, that this was risky and he was super calm and calculated/experienced. I don’t think he’ll be found easily.

The Hilton is super famous for hosting big events in NYC. UHC was holding its annual investor conference at the Hilton today.

Detectives believe shooter was an experienced marksman, police officials say

From CNN's John Miller
Detectives believe the suspect in the shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO operated slowly, deliberately, and in a way that suggested he was experienced marksman, according to police officials speaking to CNN on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.

Firearms experts who have studied the video say it appears that the gun malfunctioned with each shot. “Jamming” refers to the gun not loading another bullet into the chamber after its fired. The gunman is seeing racking the slide back to clear the “jam” and load another round.

He reacts in the way that someone with firearms training from law enforcement or the military would be trained to react to such an issue.

Question because I basically know nothing about guns and their physics: can a jam happen just completely randomly, or can it be indicative of the gun being loaded improperly?

Maybe it was someone on the inside. A jilted employee or close associate.

if it was someone seeking revenge for a specific coverage denial they probably have a name or names of people who have been over the top towards the company. you don’t just jump from coverage denial to murder the CEO at investor day, there would be interim escalations with your identity attached. That person probably couldn’t afford a hitman, either. That leads me to believe it’s some broader attack on the company’s ethics in general or a totally unrelated domestic situation (ripe for murder for hire.)

Which leads me to one thing not mentioned upthread: UHC has been embroiled in a massive ransomware attack for months. It’s cost them almost a billion dollars. The perpetrators are non us criminal organizations (Eastern Europe, eg Russia) and I believe the DoJ is offering 10M to identify them. Perhaps this is related somehow to that conflict? Don’t mess with us, we mean business?
The shooter looks like he could be Eastern European or Russian flown in specifically for this. I wasn’t aware of the ransomware attack but it could be an interesting angle. Provides another reason to do the crime in NYC. Guaranteed to make world news if that is what the perpetrators were going for. A la 9/11.

I don't know anything about guns either, so I have no idea. But it appears this guy could handle the jamming without getting flustered.
