If he DIDN'T discard his clothing and back pack, as too risky, backpack could have contained a trenchcoat or long winter coat, glasses, and fake mustache or such and off he goes looking like a New Yorker on his way to work.

So, according to this article somewhere before 6:44 am, the gunman strolls into the Starbucks and is seen on video.
Still manages to arrive across the street and at the future scene of the crime 5 minutes before Thompson, who arrived at 6:44 am.

The conference wasn't scheduled to start until 8 am.

How did the gunman know that Thompson was planning on arriving at the hotel early to practice his speech and manage to not only be there but beat him there by 5 minutes?
That is the right question- either he got very lucky or he knew.

Maybe Thompson also went to Starbucks this morning..

Did I read correctly that the first shot was to the leg? If so, that seems odd??
I watched the video on Twitter. IIRC, he shot him in the leg first. Then, Thompson limps to the side of the building and turns around as the gunman continues to fire (even clearing a gun jam).

ETA: My husband thinks that he was shot in the back first; however, after the first shot, he flinches his left leg and them limps to the side of the building. I could be wrong, of course.

I live in the UK so less familiar with guns here. The guy seems to be a good marksman and hit a moving target multiple times,
I agree fully about the marksmanship. Hitting moving targets under stress is difficult.

Equally, telling is how fast he cleared the jammed pistol. A decent majority of gun owners in the US would have no idea how to clear a jammed pistol.

A majority of those who do would probably get surprised that the gun did not fire, try to fire it again. Then, realizing that its jammed, stare at it for a while. Then....take a little bit to determine if its a "fail to extract" or "fail to feed jam" and.... start clearing it.

But the murderer does it "on the fly". To me, this shows, personal practice on the particular skills, or prior police, military, security training.

If you are confident you can make the leg shot, not a bad strategy. Will be much easier to make sure you land a lethal shot if target is immobilized

Plus I believe he is using subsonic rounds. These cause more frequent jams. But are also much less broadly known and less available. Implies deep familiarity with firearms

And, here's a video...this was clearly a hit.

The way he just calmly walks away and did not even flinch when he saw there was somebody else in that street :-( this is not his first hit assignment.

If they don’t catch him soon, we will know it was a contract and trying to setup a fake identity by being seen at Starbucks with prosthetics.
I've watched 20/20 and 48 Hours enough to know that all hired killers aren't Jason Bourne.

I very much doubt he shot him in the leg (calf has been reported) intentionally.

Just my opinion…. I see several comments about the assassin possibly wearing a prosthetic nose.

To me his nose just looks like a nose….a little long but after all, there are nine million noses living here. Not to mention however many out-of-towners are here at any given moment.

The only bit of credence that I can see about a false nose is solely because he could’ve easily had his mask above his nose at Starbucks, yet his nose was exposed.

But again, as a nose it looks like a real nose, IMO. Definitely there is someone out there who could identify him, as enough of his facial features are clear.

IMO it’s his eyes that are more distinctive.

Hopefully that’s the case and will aid in arrrest. But living in nyc no one would bat an eye at someone in a full balaclava in a Starbucks in midtown

Have police said anything about the witness who was standing there? That person may be afraid to come forward. I would be!
In the press conference they said they were trying to track down that witness.

Has anything more been shared on the nature of the threats. That piece doesn’t make sense to me—who warns about a contract killing. Though could be unrelated—many people upset when it comes to healthcare (in no way saying this should be directed at him or justifies despicable actions)

Yet another avenue to consider, could the victim have been involved in something unconnected to his job? You can imagine the usual... drugs, gambling, shady foreign financial dealings, etc... and maybe the killer was on a plane back to Europe before most of us even knew this happened.
