The court hears that in this case Sorell received Telstra call charge records for a number ending in “783”.

He says the records were for a four year period to August 2023.

He confirms he was contacted by VictoriaPolice in January 2024 who were seeking analysis of the mobile phone records.

He says the IMEI [International Mobile Equipment Identity, used to identify phone handsets] number changed a number of times during this four-year period.

I think the Guardian reporter has fallen asleep.
Not everyone is engrossed by technical evidence. I love it, personally. But if the Guardian has slipped into a post lunch Nanna nap, well, I just hope they don't snore.

Prosecutor Jane Warren says police asked Sorell to help identify connections that Erin Patterson’s phone made to the locations of Outtrim and Loch. He was also asked to identify movements of the device on 31 July 2023 - two days after the lunch - between 8am and 10am.

Sorell agrees he was asked for help with these points.

Sorrell says he was asked to identify “periods when the phone could have been in the Outtrim area which at that stage was a very broad definition”.

He says he was asked to determine if the phone was “passing through” the area or spending time in the region.

He notes the evidence has “quite significant limitations”. He says:

The best that can be said is that a phone is in a general area.
The prosecution previously told the jury that reported observations of death cap mushrooms in Outtrim and Loch had been posted on the iNaturalist website in early 2023.

Erin Patterson's phone pings in Outtrim on May 22

Dr Sorell says as part of his team's analysis, they looked at occasions when Ms Patterson's phone stayed in one area for prolonged periods and other occasions where it appeared to be passing by.

Another table is shown to the court, documenting events on the May 22, 2023. It shows SMS and data activity from 10.30am to 12.55pm.

The cell description starts at Leongatha, before shifting to Outtrim at 11.18am. Connections to Koonwarra and Kardella take place at 11.21am and Outtrim at 11.31am, before connecting back to Leongatha at 12.03pm.

The jury is shown Patterson’s Telstra call charge records for 22 May 2023.

Warren asks about the connections which start at Leongatha at 10.30am.

At 11.18am and 11.19am, there is a connection to Outtrim, followed by connections to Koonwarra and Kardella, the court hears. There is also a connection to Outtrim at 11.21am.

Sorell says there was a 13-minute period of connection to Outtrim. He says this does not suggest it was a visit to the Outtrim area.

At the top of the document is Sorell’s opinion which states “unlikely a visit”.

He says this conclusion was based purely on the call charge records.

Color me confused.

Got caught in the door on the last thread closing, but wanted to say that I agree with this whole post by Detective:
Exactly!

On more thought, it seems to me that she hid the Death Cap "powder" in the duxelle and also used regular mushrooms for the duxelle to give the appearance of mushrooms because the Death Cap powder didn't resemble mushrooms. I don't believe she rehydrated The Death Caps and added them in as chopped mushrooms. I believe they were powdered immediately after drying and were put in a jar for the future meal.

So when the health department were analysing the food scraps, they would have seen white mushrooms from Woolworths, and been confused because there wasn't any visible death caps.

Maybe she didn't anticipate them finding Death Cap DNA in the meal...

Wow, this paired with the iNaturalist evidence covered earlier involving death caps in the Loch and Outtrim areas doesn't look great IMO

Erin Patterson's phone stationary near Outtrim for 25 minutes

Dr Sorell drills it down to the hour between 11am and 12pm on the day in question.

In that short period, Erin Patterson’s phone appears to have made more numerous base station connections. Some of the locations include: Leongatha, Outtrim, Koonwarra, Kardella and Mirboo North.

As Dr Sorell said earlier, these phones are greedy and often go searching for the best possible base station with the strongest signal.

He drills down further to a window between 11.24am and 11.49am — where the phone remains almost constantly connected to the Outtrim base station, apart from when it hooked in to a station at Foster north for a few minutes.

"It indicates at that point the phone is more likely to be relatively stationary," he says.

We're out for a break

Back with more phone record analysis with Dr Sorell after a short break.

If you're struggling to keep up with this technical evidence, we don't blame you.

But keep in mind what the prosecution said earlier in this trial.

They claim Dr Tom May made an online posting about death cap mushrooms in Outtrim on May 21, the day before Erin Patterson's phone allegedly made this possible visit to the same area.

Wait, are the two news stations giving conflicting reports about if her phone was in Outrim?
[OK, IT'S NOT IN OUTRIM 10;30 TO 11:21 AM ON MAY 22

BUT IT IS PROBABLY THERE 11:24 TO 11:49 ON MAY 22? ]

Now I get it. I got confused over the witness saying it was unlikely a visit per the Guardian.

Wait, are the two news stations giving conflicting reports about if her phone was in Outrim?
So it’s not just me! The Guardian reported:

Sorell says there was a 13-minute period of connection to Outtrim. He says this does not suggest it was a visit to the Outtrim area.

At the top of the document is Sorell’s opinion which states “unlikely a visit”.

He says this conclusion was based purely on the call charge records.

I can't wait for Dr Sorell to give evidence in the Samantha Murphy case :)

The location of the death caps has since been removed from the iNaturalist page

He has been talking about 2 different times I think

This one where he says an unlikely visit

Than he looks at another time period where he thinks it was a visit

Which is stationary for 25minutes. Hopefully I have that correct?

SO he is saying it is not showing her there from 10 am to 11:15 or so AM on May 22

HOWEVER it is probable she was in Outrim from 11:24 to 11:49 AM that day.

So she took 24 minutes to grab up the Death Caps?

Thank you!

Unfortunately the Guardian reporter left off that second part which caused confusion. I’m not impressed with the quality of their reporting.

Yes, that's what I got from it too.

And it appears that her earlier phone pings, from 10 to 11:20ish are probably indicating that she was on the way to Outrim and was pinging off those towers some of the time, as cells bounce around in remote areas.

But there was a 24 minute timeframe where she was probably stationary in that Outrim area

Outtrim appears to be just farming properties, not a town, is this correct?
No real reason for someone to stop there…for 24 minutes.
