The authorities have been exhaustively looking for the children. The SAR leader said over 12,000 hours were spent on the ground search alone which is unprecedented in this province. They issued alerts and have also offered a reward.
Search warrants have been executed:

“We’re accessing, evaluating and analyzing a significant volume of information from a variety of sources. We have a very coordinated and deliberate approach to make certain all information is meticulously scrutinized, prioritized and actioned to ensure nothing is missed,” Cpl. Sandy Matharu, investigation lead with the Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit, said in the release. “We’re committed to doing what is necessary to locate Lilly and Jack and advance the investigation, which may take longer than we all hoped.””
Police would not say if investigators still believe the children were not abducted or whether they believe Lilly and Jack are still alive.

The SAR leader also explained why the general public was not invited to help search. They were working with tracking K9s and drones that could pick up heat signatures — the scents and heat signatures from the general public could have possibly interfered with both of those efforts and resources.
Each property owner should have checked their land when asked (without interfering with the search area). I think that’s easier said than done, though, based on the terrain and the mineshafts underneath.
Early reports said the community is made up of about 100 people, many of whom are related and have been there for generations. Possibly they’ve been privately searching.
