What difference does it make to the USA that Canada changes the price of electricity?

I fail to see how preventing vehicles made in Canada from being sold in the US will punish Canada.
Where will those vehicle be sold?

The real reason why the Ontario PM backed down...not surprising.

And it is clear that under threat of actual cut off "with a smile" over the next few years, the reliance on Canadian electricity will be ended.

I'm not sure what exactly is funny about the idea of a trade war that negatively impacts both economies and could put thousands of people out of their homes and jobs. People with families and children and lives. There are already farmers who have been severely impacted by this.

Even if Ford did reach out, so what? This isn't an arm-wrestling contest or some game, this is real life. I'm glad you find it all very amusing though.

Why does the USA care what Canada does with natural resources, like electricity. The USA needs nothing from Canada.

It's a bit silly for the USA Trade Rep to discuss CUSMA with a premier. The olive branch below:

"Please see a joint statement from United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and myself:
Today, United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Premier of Ontario Doug Ford had a productive conversation about the economic relationship between the United States and Canada. Secretary Lutnick agreed to officially meet with Premier Ford in Washington on Thursday, March 13 alongside the United States Trade Representative to discuss a renewed USMCA ahead of the April 2 reciprocal tariff deadline. In response, Ontario agreed to suspend its 25 per cent surcharge on exports of electricity to Michigan, New York and Minnesota."

I just watched a bit on the CBC about how all over northern Maine (the part that sticks up into QC) doesn't even receive US power. They're on our power grid.

I think it is safe to say that is going to change.

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed due to no links to various statements of fact>

In a joint statement released by Lutnich and Premier Ford, they agree that "in response" Ford has suspended (temporarily removed) the surcharge.

Canada doesn't need money, Canada is not exploring bonds to fund Canada.

Canada has a 7.5% tariff on USA dairy. USA dairy contains hormones, which are banned in Canada. Canada has supply management and does not need or want USA dairy. If the USA attempts to dump more that 18% of total Canadian dairy production in Canada, the deterrent is a 270% tariff. That is a deterrent to prevent the USA from dumping cheap, low-quality product in Canada. The USA should keep their dairy in their country - that's the best option. Just keep it.

The next prime minister was elected by the Liberal Party, and a federal election will be announced soon. That is where Canadians will decide the next prime minister. Canada government is modeled after the UK, and no one expects the USA to understand that complex system.

<modsnip>

Canada is preaching to no one. The USA can do whatever it wants. Canadians don't care, unless the USA declares war against Canada.

IMO, the threatened aluminum tariffs would target Quebec and that's why Ford cancelled.

Quebec sells power too, but they didn't apply the surcharge.

IMO, the provinces agreed not to take actions that would threaten another's province's resources.

I wish all the testosterone-fuelled snarling and lashing of tails would stop. <modsnip>

1) We did not appoint a new PM. The current one announced he was stepping down and Mark Carney won a months long leadership race that saw a higher voter turnout than any other in recent history.
2) Mark Carney is not currently the PM
3) WEF reference says all I need to know about you. Good day.
Propaganda is far reaching.

Linked upthread - in response to the "olive branch" (per Ford's statement), there is a pause on the surcharge.

I'm still waiting to hear why this matters to the USA since the USA Federal Government has repeatedly stated that it does not need anything from Canada. The USA does not need Canadian electricity, so what is the problem?

Some of those Executive Orders aren't worth the paper they're written on. It's the first time I've ever seen a POTUS use them to stage drama.

Comparing Trump now to the Trump of 4 years ago, I really wonder about the state of his mental / emotional / cognitive health. His increasingly erratic behavior and rigid, illogical rants seem like some form or stage of dementia or the side effect of some medication, etc. I'm not a health care professional, but something is really wrong with him. JMO
You nailed it!
Trump's niece who is a psychologist warned of this in her book (which I have not read).

IMO he has untreated psychological issues and is getting older so his mental instability causes him to become obsessed with things like tariffs. He usually always shows his hand with these obsessions. Buying Greenland and making Canada the 51st state is just a way to cozy up to Putin.

Meanwhile Ukrainians are being slaughtered because of 1 man, DJT who was told no by VZ . This is retaliation. DJT will never forget that and other perceived slights because that is what people with mental illness do. I'm glad people are seeing that. But the GOP will never concede. Never. They only care about power and hate.

Most Americans do not support any of this. Most of the voters did not vote for Trump.

We know Elon Musk is on regular ketamine therapy and it has some very serious side effects, some of which he may be displaying.

I think Trump is on some meds that, combined with his cognitive decline, are exposing early stage dementia. He would be truly frightened about this and lashing out at everyone, especially as he made such a point of exposing Biden't decline.
I just read this after posting. You said it much better than me. Maybe I should just hush! I think Elon Musk is going to be his worst mistake with JD a close 2nd.

Who is this US trade representative? I find it hard to believe an unnamed representative will be there to make any decisions.

Who is it?

If you're referring to the meeting with Ford Thursday, he's meeting secretary Lutnick.

U.S. stocks closed lower, but cut their steep early losses in the afternoon after Ontario Premier Doug Ford agreed to suspend a 25% surcharge on electricity imports to Michigan, New York and Minnesota.

The backpedaling came after President Donald Trump ordered on Tuesday morning a doubling of tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel to 50% in retaliation against Ontarioโ€™s energy duties. The 50% tariffs were to become effective Wednesday, he said. After the close, the Trump administration said the double tariff is off the table in light of Ford's retreat.
Stocks cut losses. Tariff war averted. Canada reverses energy surcharge after Trump threat
