He had four fake IDs, but he gave the one he used at the NY hostel when approached by LE at McDonald’s in Altoona? Did he have that one in his pocket or what?

He had been carrying four fake IDs?…

Well, $100,000 is a good start (but taxes are paid first, if I remember correctly about tax laws and donations). This will probably not even be enough for the retainer.

Also from the article, a statement from the owners of the donation account-

It added that if Mangione rejected the money "they will instead be donated to legal funds for other U.S. political prisoners."

So the LM donation site has been set up by people who see Brian Thompson's murderer as a "U.S. political prisoner"?

Parents must be paying, no way could he personally afford to retain such a high level lawyer, her fees from now to end of trial, plus other expenses will be in 7 figures

Given how intelligent and successful LM was, I wonder if his ego would allow him to use mental health or addiction as his defense. Seems like it would be a conflict against his grandiose ideas of why he targeted BT. IIRC the "manifesto" which is being circulated states that he didn't have any of these issues.

Anyone have an idea of how much his defense lawyer will charge for a case like this?
Easily in the 6 figures range I believe.

OJ’s legal fees for his murder trial and build up to it were over $3m, I doubt this will be much less

This says it all - a darkness that was always there. I'm guessing that means his view of the world is dystopian rather than utopian. His expectation is that quality of life will deteriorate. Then he came up with his 'brilliant' idea that killing someone would fix the problem.

“He was in a lot of pain and needed a lot of help,” another high school classmate told The Post.

“Of course I’m shocked but there was a darkness to him that was always there.”

Per CNN
LM hires high powered NY attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo
Busy lady, she's hitting the big league status.

How does an unemployed LM able to pay a lawyer of that stature???? And without family support??
Gimmie Money funds, I think there's one already in place that's close to $100K so far.

My hairdresser (had appointment yesterday) is from the town adjacent to this. She stated this prison was considered desirable and nicer than any other in Pennsylvania. Stated that it's common for prisoners to request transfer to that facility. He's in for quite a shock if/when he ends up in Rikers.
That helps explain why he is fighting extradition. JMO

Maybe, but LE has a lot more direct evidence in this case than what the Prosecution had in OJ's. Either way, it's not going to be cheap by any means. I wonder if his direct family or the family patriarch will step in to help with that?

From all reports, he seemed to disappear from folks starting in July. Also the same time his friend tried to reach him about a wedding commitment. The report doesn’t say when the wedding was but I find the timing interesting. Could be just a coincidence of course. MOO

“In July, one user tweeted at Mangione, “I haven’t heard from you in months,” urging him to let him know if Mangione could honor the “commitments” he had made for the user’s wedding.”

Sadly disturbing.

Luigi Mangione has retained a high-powered New York attorney to represent him as he faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, CNN has learned.

A possibility- LM is paying for it

Looking at her CV and what she has achieved I would imagine her to be one of the most expensive lawyers in the state, truly elite status. I am not convinced he could afford her on his own, must have been hired by family surely

By killing BT he has done more harm than good, UHC will want to recover that lost value and will do so by hiking prices, denying high risk/expensive cases etc

I wonder if the reporting that there may be a turnaround in LM's fighting of extradition is related to his NYC attorney's advice to get LM to NY City earlier rather than later. I am not sure what her strategy would be, but the news of a turnaround regarding the extradition issue seems to line up with the timing of the announcement of the retention of his NYC attorney.

Loved “has done more harm than good”

Good. There's his next cause; improve prison conditions.

I'm curious about the defence strategy. If the theory is that he took pain medication and it altered his mind such that he could no longer think straight, it all falls apart if he was experimenting with soft or illegal drugs at the same time. That is, no one can know whether something like magic mushrooms, or prescription drugs, altered his ability to think clearly.

I think he would have to demonstrate that pain medication has the ability to enhance meticulous planning while simultaneously causing "brain fog" and dystopian or murderous thoughts.

Mangione's use of the term "brain fog" gets my attention. It's a common term associated with concussion. An example is being unable to find words when speaking. He has foggy thinking, but he's high school valedictorian and he completed two degrees in 4 years? That's rather remarkable for someone who has foggy thinking.

If the fog happened between roughly Jan 2022, when he overdid it surfing, and July 2023, when he cut contact with family and friends, how does he explain the positive experience he had travelling around Asia between roughly Jan 2023 and April 2024?

He seems to have two modes. One is gregariously pushing himself in sports - which he should know will aggravate his disability. The other is anger because he experienced pain after aggravating his disability.

I absolutely think she's going to do it for mate's rates if not free. What she gets out of this in publicity is worth gold to her.
