MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – The CEO of UnitedHealthcare was killed in a Midtown shooting Wednesday morning, sources told PIX11 News.

Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just before 7 a.m. near a hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, sources said. Video posted to Citizen showed police tape on the Midtown street as police arrived at the scene.

He was rushed to an area hospital and later died. Thompson was in New York City for an investors meeting at a Hilton hotel, according to sources.

The shooting is being investigated as a possibly targeted hit, sources said.

That gun is going to be a very important component to this story I think...it's just way to unusual.

Looks like a Hugo Boss Cormina (I don’t know if they make that style this season) or Moncler Lez Field jacket (that’s really pushing it re price)
here's a pricey J.Crew:

much more reasonable similar:

not sure if he is just preppie, or decided that wearing decent clothing would subject him to less scrutiny overall

What's known:
  • Bus travel: The suspect traveled via Greyhound bus to New York before the shooting. That bus started its route in Atlanta, and authorities do not know whether the suspect boarded it in that city or elsewhere. The suspect was seen on surveillance camera getting off the bus at around 9 p.m. on November 24 and walking through the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
  • Fake ID: Police believe the gunman arrived in New York City on November 24 — 10 days before the shooting — and checked into an Upper West Side hostel. The suspect left the hostel on November 29 and then used a fake New Jersey driver’s license when checking back in on November 30. The suspect is believed to have stayed in a multi-person room with two other males.
  • Flirting reveals clue: A woman working at the hostel told authorities that, at one point, she asked the man to lower his mask while flirting with him. This is when photos of him smiling were captured, which were later released by police.
  • Potential sources of DNA: Police have been able to get one fingerprint from the water bottle that the suspected gunman left behind at the site of the shooting — but it’s smudged, making it less conclusive. Authorities found the bottle and a phone near the scene of the shooting that could have belonged to the gunman and may have been dropped as he fled the scene.
  • Footage helps trackers: Investigators are using footage to help them track the suspect’s movements in New York City. One surveillance video shows what appears to be the suspect on West 55th Street before the fatal shooting. Another video appears to show the suspect on New York City’s West 85th Street at around 7 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

What is particularly intriguing about this case is that the motives range from garden variety/divorce/hit for money to foreign influence campaign by Russia to destabilize democracy via uprising against the elites. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if either of these is the motive. I do think he had and accomplice and honestly regarding his looks, he gives off Andrew Cunanan vibes, though if this were a psychosexual murder I WOULD be surprised.

I'd sure like to know what the perp has in that backpack.

I'd sure like to know what the prep has in that backpack.
Everything from the 10 days in the Hostel, including a change of clothes. I believe he changed in Central Park, at a predetermined location where he put in the clothes he wore plus the weapon and handed it off to the accomplice. I also believe the accomplice was guarding the Ebike that the perp jumped on right after the shooting.

Absolutely, and I don't expect them to release a name and photo once they do identify him. They'd try to quietly track him down first.
ITA. As it seems targeted, it would be different if it was a random and they felt the public was in danger.

When/if they hone in on this guy, and know his identity, have learned where he is, we won't know until he is apprehended.

I am trying to find a map with the killer’s movements and times that was on the last thread. If anyone has it will you post it for this thread?

I don't think he had an accomplice. He could have left the e-bike in the street. May have thrown out daily living stuff before the crime -- traveling light for NYC exit.

There's a map here:

It is relatively easy to get from ATL to the Atlanta Greyhound station on public transit. Cameras, but that was long enough ago that it's unknown how long they keep the film. ATL has direct flights from 240 airports, including all 50 states and 47 countries.

I added a few addresses (where the video with him on the phone was taken) and the address of the surveillance camera on West 85th, if you want to be that specific. It’s on the second thread.

Most of it is speculation. There’s some updates with screenshots and links to news stories. For the most part, @whitelilac has posted the most up-to-date info.

At any time day or night in NYC, an unattended bike, especially an e-bike, would be stolen in 30 seconds.
